This is a Kayak Video Review of Dagger Kayaks Stratos 14.5S. The Stratos 14.5S is the smaller version in the two-boat series that is designed for paddlers in the 110 lbs - 160 lbs range who desire a boat to grow with.

Thanks. I was trying to figure out the difference in the S and L

I'm 6' and 210# and found a great deal on a virtually new 14.5S. Ive ridden a bit wider (but smaller cockpit entry) Necky Zoar Sport for many years that that "wandered away" recently. Should I pull the trigger on the S or pay twice as much for a new L?? Thanks, B.

Hi I’m in a bit of a dilemma, 1) I’m new to kayaking and my main purpose for doing so is to kayak camp for no more than 2 days at a time around Scotland, I have just purchased the axis 10.5 but thinking of returning it to the store for the Stratos as I’m worried I’ll not have enough storage for my gear , would you agree 2) if I do change to the Stratos am I best getting the large or small? I’m 6 foot and weigh 147lbs I’m more heavy in the legs than upper body If you have time I’d appreciate any help with these questions as I can’t buy this kayak in store only online so I am limited to info but have found this channel really helpful

Hey Stevie, thanks for reaching out! I'd definitely recommend moving from the Axis to the Stratos. The Axis is much more of a recreational kayak that is a crossover from flat-water to moving water. The Stratos is much more of a touring-type of kayak, which includes a responsive hull design for playing in waves if you wanted. As for fit, I'm thinking you should lean towards the large version. While your weight might be better suited for the small, I think your height might make your legs feel a little cramped. The Large is an inch and half wider than the small, but you can also add shims to the hip pads, which would allow you to bring in the fit at the beam to provide better contact. I hope this helps, but please don't hesitate to send us an email to info@frontenacoutfitters.com with any other questions you may have! Cheers,

I am getting a Stratos. I am 5ft9' (177cm) and weight (no kit) 74Kg (163lb) - I guess when you add paddling clothing and paddle I will be more towards 78-80Kg (170-175). From your descriptions the Small is up to 160ish pounds and the Large from 175-220 lb. So I am right in between sizes. I am new to sea kayaking so not entirely sure how a touring kayak should feel. Which size one would you recommend?

Given your 'in between' size, it's tough to say with 100% certainly unless you get an opportunity to sit in and paddle both models. That said, the main use of the kayak is something to consider as that might help make the decision for you (i.e. strictly day paddling and/or playing in the waves vs. weekend tripping with the need for gear capacity). The larger version gives you a little more room both in fit and capacity, which makes it the better choice if tripping is your main type of paddling - also, when you start to factor in the weight of camping gear, you start to creep further above the optimal paddler weight of the small Stratos. Accordingly, if playing in the waves is more your style, then the small is a great choice as you'll achieve a more 'controlled fit' within the cockpit. Again, the best way to determine what's best for you is to test paddle both models. But if that's not available to you, really try to nail down your main use of the kayak for direction on which route to go. Thanks for the comment, and I hope this helps you along the way to purchasing a new boat! Don't hesitate to reach out again if you have any other questions or concerns. Happy Paddling!

@@FrontenacOutfitters thank you! I am going to try them tomorrow. Unfortunately I won't have the chance to paddle them but I will at least see how it feels inside. I appreciate the main difference will be in the water since the difference between them is the width and volume of the stern, but it will be the best I can get! And then let's get those black Friday deals!!

I'm 6"4 270lbs will this be a good fit for me ?

Seth, At your size, you're going to be a better fit for the Stratos 14.5L. Depending on where you carry your weight (i.e. in your torso or in your hips), the larger model may also feel a little bit tight. If you're weight is in your upper body, given your height of 6'4", you may find the boat to be a little 'tippy' initially. Certainly something I'd recommend taking for a test paddle before buying!
