Hey Micky, I did some digging online about your problems with the DB and found some things to help you. So apparently the DB quest to get the letter can only happen once and has a 30 day expiration/lock out timer; meaning yes, you can be softlocked from the DB. You can only get the quest once you kill 3 people or 15 guards, AND you must be in a town, not in jail, in order to be able to get the letter. However, while searching for this, I did find a consol command for Dagger Unity to restart/reset the timer. The command is "startquest l0a01l00" due note that you must stay in the region you killed the people in in order to get the letter. If all else fails, I am willing go digging deeper for help, I got nothing but time. I really hope this is helpful for you and you can experience the DB finally!
So if you murder someone in Daggerfall, you get a fine of 200 drakes and a little over half a year of prison time...BUT If you cross the border into Skyrim whilst witnessing the theft of a horse, AND the leader of the rebel army is there. You get beheaded?
I dunno, I've been murdered over a stolen spoon. Yet let walk on a murder cause a piece of paper said it was all good. Seems like crime and punishment is pretty circumstantial in Tamriel.

If you want to, Daggerfall Unity has... Quite a few QOL mods (besides what our lad here is using) to help make it more like Skyrim. I know there's one that removes the D&D Armor Class mechanic in favor of the Oblivion/Skyrim mechanic where Armor actually deals with defense, and one that makes physical attacks no longer whiff, instead you can have bad attacks that do chip damage instead of missing outright. There's others that rebalance things to be more toward Morrowind, too... And there's always Skyggerfall! Which ports the main Daggerfall quest to Skyrim, it's kind of shrunken down and they cut off a lot of the paths that make you get lost, but it's not bad as far as getting the basic main quest experience with all your comfort. (just don't use the climbing mod that Skyggerfall recommends, look around for one that works better if you NEED to have it).
57:35 Morrowind is smaller than the Tulune province in Daggerfall including the DLC areas, it just has a ridiculous amount of hills you cannot climb making it feel bigger. Time a run from Privateers hold to Daggerfall city and then do the same in Morrowind from Seyda Neen to the furthest point north with no clip and AI turned off. You can do the morrowind run more than 5 times the Daggerfall run. The city just north of Daggerfall is further away than Balmora is from Seyda Neen but it's a small dot almost touching Daggerfall city on the map. Morrowind has the smallest map of all the games from Daggerfall to today including FO3, just no fast travel, terrain that forces you to go around it constantly, and constant attacks from cliff racers making it take longer to traverse than any other game. I would bet that if you put all the capital cities of Daggerfall together into as much of a square as possible then removed the city walls that would be bigger than Morrowinds map including the ocean around it.
Distance fog also does a lot to make the world appear bigger. Think about Runescape. Back in the day it appeared huge, but nowadays with all the modern clients and insane view distance it's pretty obvious that it isn't that massive.
around 2:09:45 Micky talks about the lack of agency in some RPGs like "Fall Out 4". I could agree more. A lot of games do this and it drives me nuts. Dragon age 2, the OG KOTOR, like please let me be who I want. I have enough baggage in my real life.

Ah yes, daggerfall thieves guild and dark brotherhood. If you meet the requirements you have to wait in the province where the crime was committed, and the courier arrives at certain times, usually bright and early 8 to 12. No fast travel to speed it up, you gotta actually wait outside buildings on the streets. Lady brisiena can be ignored, the main quest starts proper when lhotun and morgiah writes you.
The only thing I didnt like about Daggerfall's main quest was after you completed the tasks the Emperor sent you to do the whole Numidian quest that ended in the worst puzzle dungeon that wore out it's welcome less than 1/4 the way through. The main quest would have been superior if the letter quest was done first just as it was but leads into Lysandus which would be doubled in quests. Once he was done the main quest ends and you are free to explore more mazes if you want.
How many RU-vid users actually care about the chat box? I don't read it; I've never cared about it. I don't even care about the chat when things are live. I would much prefer not having a third of the screen covered in text I don't read. But maybe that's just me, and everybody else finds it super interesting?
I fuckin' hate it when it's overlayed on the gameplay or takes ups 1/3 of the screen. The few times I watch Twitch streams I just fullscreen the gameplay to get rid of the chat. I don't watch streams or VODs to see a bunch of asinine remarks and backseat gaming.

The most glaring thing to me is enemies being much faster/aggressive than they should (imps firing up spells on you like a machine gun) and another huge issue I have been noticing is enemies running out of doors as soon as you open the door, they basically warp through the door as soon as you click the mouse to open a door, these things NEVER happened in the original. The very core foundation of this game is combat and movement, I would expect these things to be given priority over anything else before other things being worked in. Another thing you notice from my footage: you never miss enemies that often. Okay, misses happen, but it's not so utterly insane as it appears in Unity.
oh my god... can't believe they're doing the same shit to Daggerfall Unity as they did to gzdoom/Doom mods... over time they started making updates look darker and darker, can't barely see shit these days... I thought something was going wrong with my new laptop, or something bad with my monitor, but no, I only fully realized the amount of damage once I started comparing screenshots side by side
well, yeah I'm liking these new real-time lighting and shadows effects Unity is implementing, so at least they're giving a tradeoff to making everything darker, it's not like they just fuck you over and run LOL that's good
ah yeah, another thing I also noticed: it seems like it's much easier to get enemies infighting each other in Unity... that didn't happen as often in the original game... for some dungeons or missions, that alone will completely break the balance of the game and ruin the Survival atmosphere that this game was known for (changes that affect the gameplay experience)
50:40 absurd... not even in Doom (which is a game where is rather easy to provoke enemies to attack each other) that doesn't happen... Unity is a nice product, but have these things in mind if you're playing the game for the 1st time, it's not going to be the "legit" experience (and water is wet duh) At the end of the day who cares
i played daggerfall in the 90's and i recently started on the unity version and i couldn't quite put my finger on why it FELT so different, but i think you right. the combat feels way more difficult because i don't remember missing literally 9 swings out of 10.

DOSBox Daggerfall makes you type in the whole thing verbatim if I recall. Very annoying when you're dealing with "The Ruined Lair of Agamemnon Kingwing" and have to get the spelling exactly right or else just get back "this place doesn't exist"

I played the game for a while before playing Daggerfall Unity but that was so long ago I guess it's Unity only then. But that's the version most people nowadays play anyways. this is my main complaint with Unity version of the game... mostly 3 things: enemies being made much faster/aggressive than they were originally (AI code reworked from the ground up), combat seems to be messed up in a way that seems like the player misses attack way too often, and enemies warping/teleporting through doors before you have time to fully open the door

Unity causes the false impression on people that never played this game in a way that it seems like a "hardcore survival" experience... it's not even closer to any of that... don't be scared by that false representation guys... I did not expect to notice so many differences, it's not like I planned this whole thing
"Not an rpg if you are playing a set character with a background", is quite a dumb take. You effectly are saying most rpgs out there aren't rpgs because you can't insert yourself into them. I don't know of a single rpg video game that exists where you can be whatever, and whoever you want. Even in TES:Daggerfall you are retricted to a handful of races, and even then have a predetermined backstory. Sure you can ignore it, but it's still an integral part of that world. You can't even be a character of renown repute from the get go, as you already start as an adult who must have done something prior to the start of the game to get them where they are now. There's a hole in your hot take opinion, one that makes no rpg an rpg. Also funny to see people comment on Bethesda having bugs in their game, when this Unity game wasn't made by them. XD
That wasn't my point ultimately. I'm not saying pre-made backgrounds are a bad thing in an RPG, just that they don't fit in Fallout 4 since it goes too far out with giving your character a defining background when Fallout 2 and 3 didn't hold that much credence to the characters backstory. It's still a horrible intro that's very anti-rpg and the mechanics in particular make it less so.
@@mickyddefinitiveedition3766 Ah! I gotcha. Eh. It's personal take. No different than rpgs where you randomly roll your history and play with what you get. Only difference being the game has a set story for that aspect, where as others don't always do so. It's a different approach for sure for the series. I can never insert myself as any character in video games as I will always find something that is logical for me to do, or say that I just can't in the game. So I have to remind myself, I am not playing me. I am playing some character who I have some amount of control over. If I don't it takes me out of the immersion the game may have tried creating.
