Wither and Bloom Studios
We have playtested Daggerheart! In this session, we discuss at length the various ins and outs of the game, our opinions on certain mechanics and our overall feelings.
SPOILER ALERT! If you have not watched our Daggerheart Playtest series, you may want to do first. This video spoils some of the outcomes and gives away the ending. Fair warning.

I loved your player calling Tag Team Rolls “Fast Ball Special” because I call it that too!!! ❤

Excellent analysis! I enjoyed watching your game play. Yours is the 2nd group I have watched who lost a PC in the final battle. That other PC chose to go out in a blaze of glory and took out one of the wraiths that hadn't been touched yet!

That’s fantastic! Also, thanks for this.

Also, I don't think rolling with hope or fear means your character feels afraid or hopefull instead it's intended for us as viewers or players to feel that way because of the consequences of the action being good or bad
@shacharashkenazi6910
@shacharashkenazi6910 Месяц назад
Exactly this. The way that the hope and fear economy is explained in the book is that it acts as a sort of karma. Its the way the world reacts to the players and not the way the players react to the result of the roll. So in the example given, if the roll to pat the dog rolled with fear, it would be the dog reacting to the character and not how the character feels about the situation. Of-course, the player would then need to react to the new situation, so if the dog decides to attack, the player will react to that, but the roll with fear itself doesn't change the player's action. Another thing that is worth taking note of is that the game urges the players to only roll if there is an interesting consequence for the action. If patting the dog doesn't change the story on a hope or fear roll, then its better to just say the player succeeds.

Initiative is a weird thing. I think the thing to remember, at least for me, is that daggerheart is more cinematic, the non-initiative allows for other things to happen in combat scenarios, you can each go first boosting someone up and then they can go and lay a big whammy. I think it really leans better into non-combat objective where combat serves to add another dynamic of tension to the scene, instead of the typical dnd playstyle where once initiative is rolled its pretty much a battle to the death

Agreed. The big issue for me was when you tell the party to roll for initiative, it implies that it’s time to fight… the party rarely takes other, less combative action. Thanks for this!

I don´t remember if you talked about this. I found couple of things while you played, just to remind everyone, because I rechecked with the rules... 1st: A Critical Success would be maximum damage, means the tag team would´ve been max damage in the last session. 2nd: Tag Team only uses 1 Action Token (GM gets one instead of 2 Tokens) 3rd: Potion: you can immediately drink it without needing an action token. I really loved watching you´re type of play and it was interesting to watch how a more experienced GM plays such a game. (I´m quite new to this :) ) Hope you all have a nice day and see yo sometime again :)

Actually crits are more than max, at least for all the versions so far... "If your attack roll is a Critical Success, roll damage as usual, then add extra damage equal to the maximum potential value of all your damage dice added together (as if they all rolled the highest number possible). You do not add any modifiers to this extra damage."

Everything I hear about this game makes it sound like Edge of the Empire but not as good. If you want a similar system, check out Genesys. It’s Fantasy Flight’s universal/generic roleplaying system using similar mechanics as EotE.

A big inspiration as stated in the beta source book is the Genesys system. I have run FF Star Wars for pretty long campaigns, and I don't think that Daggerheart is not as good. It does some things I like more, especially for a fantasy setting. This is obviously my opinion after having read through the 1.4 rules and having GMed and played in a diverse amount of game systems such as World Of Darkness Storyteller systems from 2nd revised on, GURPS, FF Star Wars, Star Wars D20, Cyberpunk, Shadow Run, D&D from the Red and Blue forward, and many more. Daggerheart has a lot of potential for the right GM and players

Fear and Hope tokens are not supposed to be actual Fear or Hope that the characters feel. It's just a name given to the mechanic. In fact, it's more about what the players feel when they see a lot of fear tokens piling up on the DM's side, or a bunch of hope tokens on their side. Hope and Fear are just good and bad luck, or a twist of fate.

Yes. Definitely don’t want to make it so literal in its connection. But it does offer the flexibility to make the direction a little flexible which could be good to keep the players on their toes

I got a shout out?! *gasp* :D (Odd this didn't get picked up in my recommendations.) The sound is... off though. I'm not sure if you want to ... repost? It sounds like it exported a stereo feed, but it's 90% weighed to the right, and in a simulated large room, so it's barely audible overall? I don't know if that's on your original recordings or just an export glitch.
