This is how we do it! We are in the Philadelphia, PA area and these methods work for us. I have been growing dahlias for seven years, starting with a couple hundred plants at Roughwood Seed Collection, and now with around 350 plants at Truelove Seeds for cut flowers, seed saving, and tuber sales. We also taste test our varieties that have larger, more productive tubers. Dahlias are an Aztec plant known as Cocoxochitl in Nahuatl, and were originally used for food. Some people in Mexico still eat them!
Please let us know how you do it differently in the comments. I highly suggest joining the Facebook group "Dahlias" if you are on that platform. That group has lots of helpful people with much longer track records than me. Also, check in with your local dahlia growers and dahlia clubs for advice on your particular climate with its particular humidity and temperature ranges.
Thank you to Zoe, Hannah, and Debbie for helping to film!

This is the best explanation of how to divide I have seen. Thank you. It is always so hard to figure out how to cut and where to cut. Thank you again! Like you, I have tried a million different medias to store them in. My first time hearing about cinnamon. I will try that this year! They are great nectar for migration generation of Monarchs!

Loved all the information you gave! I’m just starting my first planting of dahlias this year and I’m very excited about the flowers and with enough information, will be able to preserve the tubers.

Glad it was helpful! Just FYI - while the vermiculite works well for other people in different climates, it really didn't work for us.

I have watched quite a few videos on this process and byfar you explained it so well and easily! Question for the hive: Is it okay to re-use the storing medium? Beit peat moss or vermiculite? I got peat moss because vermiculite is super expensive. Peat moss isn't cheap either, but as a first time dahlia grower I just couldn't invest like that. I am wondering if it is a potentially re-usable investment. That would make it worth it!

Fabulous video, think I’ve been too conservative and leaving my tubers too large, They’re getting a major haircut this year😂.Also never heard of eating them or the cinnamon option. Will give both a try 👍 Greetings from the UK, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Thanks for the detailed shots! I grew dahlias for the first time this year and have dug up my tubers and powdered them with bonded sulphur. Several sources recommended letting them air dry for a week, but I feel like some of my tubers are a lil shriveled and others are a little squishy...how dry is too dry? How squishy is too squishy? Also, how small is too small to bother trying to over-winter a tuber? I have some petite pals who have some neck and crown and eyes, but they’re so little! Thank you for any advice!

Hello! Sorry for the long delay! Thank you for the note. I imagine this is no longer useful, but I always try to overwinter my baby, small tubers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's worth a try! I often air dry mine for a week or so, just because it takes us so long to get to 400+ dahlias. Shriveled and squishy both sound bad. How did those ones do? I'd love to hear how your first year of storage went!

Thank you for your video. I'd love to know if the cinnamon helped and was the vermiculite any better at preventing rotting vs. the paper bag method? We're just digging our tubers up now and not sure what to do next so I'd appreciate any feedback! Thanks from Seattle! Natalie
@TrueloveSeeds
@TrueloveSeeds 2 года назад
Hello! So sorry that I did not get back to you! I'm just seeing this now. Vermiculite works very well for many people, but for us, it caused more rot. We prefer the paper bag method when storing larger clumps, and the peat moss in a container method when storing individual tubers.

@@TrueloveSeeds I sure appreciate you responding! Better late than never! (: Last year was our first attempt at storing our tubers and it definitely wasn't successful! ): Luckily we didn't dig up every one and so we didn't have to replace them all. I live where the winters are pretty mild and so it wasn't necessary to dig them all up but we had hoped to be able to share our tubers this year but we ended up with a bunch of shriveled up tubers. I don't think we'll be digging up our tubers this year but this is still a great reference if we get the guts to try again! Thanks so much!

Do you or any of your subscribers have any suggestions on how to prepare a head for dahlia winter storage ? Best Regards Dirk

Hi, what worked best for you in storing your tubers? The brown paper bag? or the storage in vermiculate and dusting of powder cinnamon? Please, let me know by a reply Thank you so much ..........best
@TrueloveSeeds
@TrueloveSeeds 2 года назад
The brown paper bag works great! We will be doing that exclusively when we are storing our tubers for our own use. If we start selling tubers again, we will likely use peat moss in containers. We will not use vermiculite again- we lost many tubers using this method. Other people swear by it, so it depends on your particular climate and the conditions of the area where you are storing them.

@@TrueloveSeeds Thank you very much for your reply. As a gardener, I get attached to a few plants and flowers. Your information how you store your Dahlia Tubers, is appreciated. Like most people I do loose some Tubers during storage but this year I will also try the Brown paper bags. Thank you
