An extremely rare recording of the Nihon SF Taikai audience reaction to the 1983 OAV Daicon IV - one thing noticeable about this version is how some on the animation is different, likely unfinished due to initial time contraints for the festival.

My favourite part is a lot of the really excited crowd reactions aren’t at the references, they’re just looking at the really impressive animation. As they should.

@@elbarry7016 As far as I know, the Daicon IV opening film making was "completed" *40 frickin' minutes* before its showing. So, maybe Anno and the others had to compromise at some point, then later released the upgraded version for LD software. You know, like Evangelion. This is just a speculation though...

I mean, I had the same reaction when I watched this in 2010-something. I could not believe this was made by basically amateurs in 1983. The cherry blossom explosions and the spread of greenery is some of the most visually stunning animations the world has ever seen. I have watched those images for so many times that they are printed in my mind like some kinda go to mental meditation, yet watching it again still gives me the geniun chills as I honestly enjoy watching it as much as the first time. It is a rare talent to keep that feeling in the audience.

Jeff Lynne is the singer of ELO, the band who performed Prologue/Twilight. I don't think he's ever stated/been interviewed about Daicon IV. However, Twilight was used w/ similar moments (swords, rails, etc) for a Japanese drama in 2005, so I'm guessing Jeff quietly acknowledges this.

There were so many differences from the final product. * The entire projection (and the audio) is playing a bit slow, even though the film itself is definitely 24fps, so I assume they had technical issues with the showing. * During the retread of Daicon III, we hear _Noah's Ark_ towards its _end_ rather than its very beginning. * The followup track plays some 5 seconds later than in the final version. * There are moments during the heavy montages when they cut in with moving still frames of monsters or something, presumably because those sequences were incomplete. Upon closer inspection, they're not just incomplete-what does exist is actually animated differently from the final product, with assets flying here and there in a different order altogether. * All of the best money shots-the sequences which deserve to be labeled the best animation ever put to cel by 1983-are fully intact, indicating that they received a high priority. * The "all stars" flyover towards the end is somewhat shorter. * The computer-generated planets sequence is, conspicuously, in a very beta state and the sunrise which precedes it has not yet been animated, leaving a probably confusing moment of nothing happening. All this tells me they were probably cracking the whip clear until the day it was time to show the thing off. I could probably work up a remaster of this beta version of the soundtrack.

@@tcvadomix Haha. It's a _bit_ slow. Really not even enough to account for a single frame per second loss. If it was 25% slow, the audio would be super slow and low and sound like a stab at vaporwave music. 😂

I do feel amazing, but I can't figure out how they felt watching this live" So glad that someone recorded!!! Fun fact: There are some images (starting from 4:16) that doesn't appear on actual Daicon IV restorations, some creepy monsters and other characters just after DC and Marvel scene. Maybe there are two versions, and the original uncut film played here, is lost(?

Super inspirational moment, Daicon IV will forever be an important memory for me, like everyone else says it is a pivotal moment for the culture and animation industry. It’s moments like this I’m reminded that creativity is not an example of what you create that’s new, but what you create with the inspiration of things you’ve experienced in your time. With that regard I think while I had not grown up in the age this was animations pinnacle, I still hold it as a fond memory and hold things like this in high regards in terms of inspiration, the feeling is right there. One thing I couldn’t help but notice was that the music sounds slowed down compared to the final version on RU-vid, which is interesting because the final version speeds up the original ELO sound slightly. I’m guessing the recording of this video might’ve caused the slowdown, but I can’t help but wonder if Daicon IV was meant to be slower than it is in the final version, which would’ve helped make the faces in the giant crowd scene at the end easier to see.
@shoopdawhoop

As this was played on the 8mm film projector, it possibly didn't have the precision digital timing control, hence the different speeds. We can also hear speed wobbles a little at the beginning. Most likely this isn't the camcorder's fault, because it has its own good enough timebase control, and the image overal is pretty stable (otherwise it would shake perceivably)
@Kentama
@Kentama 6 месяцев назад
I vaguely recall in a separate video where someone mentioned that the LD rips on RU-vid might not be accounting for the playback speed differences between Japanese LD players vs. NTSC (?), or something to that effect, and are slightly faster than they're supposed to be.
