Daihatsu Kōgyō K.K. is a Japanese automobile manufacturer. The company was founded in 1907 as Hatsudōki Seizō K.K. and renamed Daihatsu in 1951. A business partnership with Toyota began in 1967. Since 1998, Toyota has held the majority of shares (51.2 percent) and then took over the remaining shares in 2016, making Daihatsu a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota.
Daihatsu primarily builds small vehicles and intends to continue to focus exclusively on this market segment in the future. Many Daihatsu vehicles belong to the Japanese kei-car vehicle class.
