Daily Driven Muscle - This 1972 Plymouth Satellite Is Great Fun

On today’s episode, it’s a car I’ve owned three times, and have to see and fiddle with often despite having sold it. That’s fine though - I love this thing. Some old cars hate their continued existence and punish their owners and mechanics accordingly. Other cars are just nice and happy - like a wee little puppy - and reward their owners with countless moments of unbridle joy and tire smoke. This ‘72 Satellite (which we used to call the Green Meanie) is firmly in the second category.

This car reminds me of all the great high school cars that packed the parkings lots in the 80s. My version of this was a 4-dr '68 Galaxy I drove only because cute girls needed rides home. The lucky kids had the station wagons. Ha ha... The smoothness of being underpowered can't be denied. Reminds me also of my grandmas '68 Skylark 4-dr w/350-Powerglide combo. So smooth.

With a powerglide? I had a 69 with the 2 barrel 350 and it had a 3 speed automatic

Yep... Sadly when I moved to college, my parents sold it to a high school kid who totaled it... But yes, power glide.@@chrisallen766

Awesome car and great story! I still have my high school car which is also a '72 Satellite, but a two door, hardtop. I totally relate to the car being "happy". Mine is a total rot bucket, but man is it reliable! It had a lot of issues back in high school, but everything has been sorted out since then. In fact, most recently it was sitting for a year until I took it to the car wash and it started first try and didn't even conk out! Speaking of tires, I had 20 year old tires on it at one time and because of teenage me doing constant burnouts, the one tire (open diff) was showing cords as a chunks of rubber fell off! I noticed this when I pulled into work and still drove it home without any problems...So many great memories. Would take awhile for me to type em all out haha. Will restore some day.

That’s amazing! My wife commuted this one half an hour away for a while when we had it (a couple years before we drove it to Reno and got married) and one day, she made it home only to find that the front right tire was bulged and disintegrating. It went flat over night, but somehow had gotten her home. It had always pulled to the right - after we replaced the tires, it went dead straight. That was a very useful lesson for me in understanding front end dynamics… On the Reno trip, I’ll never forget stopping at a gas station, and a grumpy sounding middle aged gentleman saying “I bet you wish that was a two door.” Truthfully, I did not. I had a Challenger and a Charger at home, but the Satellite sedan was the right tool for the job. But a two door is good too. Haha.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I love sedans! The most prized car in my fleet is my '64 Chevrolet Bel Air sedan. Was originally by my great-grandfather when it was brand new and has been in my family ever since! The car has a lot of history and sentimental value to me. The car has been sitting for 30+ years in a garage with a dirt floor. I have wanted the car since I was a toddler and after 15ish years, I finally inherited it last year. Currently resurrecting it and planning on swapping a 454 into it as the original straight six is seized. I love sedans and coupes, it really just depends on the car. I use to be a "two door only" guy in high school, but thankfully I grew out of that. I seriously love your '72! I have actually wanted a '71 Satellite sedan for years! I really dig how they look as a sedan and it would be cool to have a two door and a four door Satellite! Super hard to find one in fair shape though... Also, I too learned about how important tires are...Lol. Thanks for sharing!

Just want to let you know that I've been binge watching your channel all week. Keep doing what you do. I find you to be very entertaining with your dry humor and sarcasm😂. I actually hit "like" on your vids and I usually NEVER do that with RU-vid videos. You've earned my subscription. And yes I own a Mopar. It's a 21 scatpack challenger 6spd manual. Thanks for reading.

Oh dang, awesome! Thank you very much! It’s appreciated. I love my ‘18 V6 Challenger, and find the power to be perfectly suited to what I need it for… but sometimes I think I should’ve gone for a Scat Pack with a stick. When they’re hopefully worth much less some day, I’m sure I’ll have a collection of them. Haha.

Buddy used to get the ex- Washington State Patrol Mopars from the '70's. All had big blocks, lots of heavy duty goodies. And they ended up being the parts source for several 318 to Big Block conversions for 2 door B & E bodies. I remember still seeing them as Interceptors into the 90's.

That’s awesome. I strongly considered making this a cop car tribute the third time I got it. Friend even had a period set of roof lights. Couldn’t bring myself to peel off the then-nearly-flawless green vinyl top, and that was the end of that. Wish those were still sitting around. My friend Tom is very into the old Dodge/Plymouth cop cars and had a few in his collection.

Great video - I have a '72 Satellite Custom here in the United Kingdom - it's bruised and battered like yours - but I love it, such a cool car to drive. Just need to find a windshield, as the original is cracked. Damn hard to find a 4 door windshield though 😞

I don’t understand the aversion to power braking. At all. But it’s a comment I’ve gotten a couple times. It’s fun, it keeps the car from sliding out of control at unwanted moments, and I’m going to continue doing it.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Yessir -it's your car. Just from a mechanical standpoint - It's bad for the torque converter, transmission, driveline, U joint's, center section, axles, and brakes. My thing is that it just looks so weak. Everyone and his sister who drove his moms min-van to high school was power-braking up a storm in the high school parking lot. Thinking the rest of didn't know that his moms minivan couldn't do anything unless he held the brake and gas pedal down at the same time. Everyone would laugh at those kids. It's a great post - and I liked the story a lot. Just not a fan of the power brake. There's always gonna be someone else with a meaner car. It's not just a competition about spinning tires or making smoke, but a display exhibiting horse power. Power braking doesn't compete with anything because it doesn't display any power. Even a moped will smoke a tire if u power brake it. It really doesn't even matter if it can only squeal one tire for 1 second - We'd rather see a real burnout than a power brake. But u do u. And don't worry about it sliding outa control - it could barely break it loose when you were standing on the brake pedal. Heh, Heh

@@guidosarducci3047 I didn’t own it during the filming of this video. I did previously own it, and have drifted that Satellite into the next lane over before. It did one legger burnouts everywhere, all the time. It’s a 318, it’s slower than your great aunt’s Nissan Maxima. But have you ever heard of fun? It’s god damn fun. Speaking of which, I had more fun in today’s video. 😅

That’s unfortunate. This one has always been happy running magic, except for some weird occasional head gasket issues. We thought it was fixed for good - until my friend that owns it now drove it to Salt Lake City, and then tried to drive it back… it’s still there. It’s fine, he came back without it and then moved down there anyway.
