I put it in the cam with my dad, I do have a video showing what all you need. But the whole swap was alittle over $1000, plus about $300 for a tune.

Getting the surge is weird, what's your idle rpm are you set at, and how big of a cam did you get? To compensate for the "early" shifting you might want to look into a higher stall for the transmission, and a lower gear ratio for the rear end, not sure what you have on there now.
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+Daniel Diaz I think the surging and shifting is happening because I don't have a higher stall. I just have a comp cam 220/220 just with the 3.42 gears.

Sounds like you really need a tune. That’s a pretty small cam to have surging issues, not to mention your shifting issues. It’s all fixed with the tune and the right tuner. For example, my 6.0L in my car with 230/238 cam has no surging, relatively smooth idle for what it is( you know there’s a cam in it) and smooth power band.

Tune it soon bro. You need the right fuel to air ratio or else you'll stall out. Which is the big cam mistake people make. Tune it or else those small problems you've been facing will turn into disasters. Thanks for the video man. And remember, no such thing as too loud. Best of luck !

Honestly a stock cam is your best bet for low end torque. For the amount of money your spending on a cam the hp difference won’t be as much. Might as well save a little more to boost it. You’ll get way more torque for towing

Pardon my ignorance, but what's a stall?
@jeffmeadors6930
@jeffmeadors6930 7 лет назад
When you get a cam sometimes depending on how big the cam is the truck will try to either die in park instead of idle or if your at a red light and just have it in drive with your foot on the brake your truck still tries to lunge forward causing you to put it in neutral at a light. So a stall just takes away that jerking motion.

Bro all of your tips and information is not correct at all, just saying... Depending on the cam you get you do not need a stall converter. There are a lot of cams that pull from idle/1200-6500 RPM. Most folks don't add an aftermarket cam worried about fuel mileage. If you have other mods that compliment the cam such as an aftermarket intake manifold or ported manifold, CAI, aftermarket throttle body or ported throttle body, full exhaust, gear and of course a tune by a reputable person/shop then the cam will benefit your truck most. A cam without any other supporting mods will hurt power rather than help it even if it is a cam with a tune, not an ideal upgrade. Do not blow your money on expensive and time consuming port/polish work when these LS stock heads actually flow very well. Port the intake and throttle body and be done with it. When you add an exhaust be sure to use long tube headers to get the full efficiency and power from your exhaust mods. An engine needs to breathe out just as much as it needs to breathe in! Have your tuner disable the rear O2 sensors and so forth. If you use 3.73 gear it will benefit most stage 1 or stage 2 aftermarket cams the best for fuel efficiency and driveability unless you are strictly building a street/strip truck or a sleeper. There are many options for cams, many and a company like Texas Speed will sell you and push you towards what you need, not what you want because most folks have no idea what they actually need anyways.

@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 лет назад
It doesn’t ruin engines at all. Doing a cam swap is safer and cheaper than boosting an engine. All a bigger cam is doing is allowing more air in and out of the engine which makes you more power.

@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 лет назад
I just put a bigger stall in mine and it honestly just makes the driving experience better. The power is more on demand instead of it slowly getting into the power band. It definitely makes it feel more torquey.

I have a 2009 Silverado 5.3 4spd that I have 190k miles on. I drive a lot of highway miles and I tow a lot, and its my daily driver. I've never had any issues with the truck other than sensors and wheel bearings, I think I've only ever sank like $2k in repairs on it ever. I've been thinking about what to do when the motor/ trans does go out, whether to rebuild the 5.3 and 4l80e or to swap for a 6.0 with a 6l80e. Either way I want to build the engine a bit, my goal is to get a reliable powerful daily for towing and doing truck stuff while getting decent fuel economy on the highway. It sounds like your truck gets the highway mileage I wish mine got, but do you or have you towed on the highway with it? Would a cam be a good investment, should I port the heads if I do, and would that make up for low end power loss? Or should I do something else like a supercharger?
@SamSheepDoq
@SamSheepDoq 6 лет назад
Dylan Downard your cam of choice can prevent the loss of low end torque. Texas Speed & Performance has a “Low Lift” truck cam that has mild specs to make sure that low end is not lost. The mid and high rpm range were improved greatly. Kit comes with all you need to put it together too. Stock stall is fine too as the cam isn’t too aggressive, but it will lope quite a bit if you go for a 111 lsa. I personally got the 114 because the idle quality will be a bit better while still having some good chop to it. As for ported heads, talk to your local machinist and see what they say. You will gain more, but it might not be worth the added cost. Really just depends on your end goal.

+Street_Toy_TV.LIVE!!! It all depends on what your going to use it for. But stock heads are fine, and intake should be fine. If you upgrade both as well as a pair of headers you'll see a big gain after the cam swap

+Jessie Fernandez I have the 220/220. It's great but I don't have a stall so it's lacking power in the lower rpms.

It was the tune, I had it returned by a different tuner and he changed up a lot with the transmission. Now it shifts in higher rpms (2500, 3000) driving normal so the engine doesn’t bog down on me. I made a video about this tune and re-uploaded another pros and cons video.

@SlayanicDoom
@SlayanicDoom 7 лет назад
That womping at a stop might be your AC clutch kicking in. I had a gm truck, whenever the clutch engaged the idle raised, almost like it was making some more hp to run the compressor.
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+Brandon S yeah I know what you mean, it does that at idle too and makes it sound a little weird. But when I have the a/c off it still does it, I just need a higher stall.

peter lawrason tune it. Turn it off. Then get the dod kit and properly remove it physically. We get better gas mileage in v8 anyways.

So let me get this right. "camming" a truck makes it sound good.
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+Bobby Fontenot yes and you get decent horsepower gains depending on the size of the camshaft
@bobbyfontenot6782
@bobbyfontenot6782 7 лет назад
You can get decent horsepower gains or you can give up horsepower and torque if the cam is not matched with the air intake system, exhaust system, and engine compression as well as not compensating the ignition timing needed for more or less air flow through the engine. I read that you removed the cats. You should have 4 oxygen sensors, one in front of and one behind each catalytic converter. These send important information (especially air/fuel ratio) to the engine control system. Without a "proper" re-tune to compensate for compression loss due to longer valve overlap using a bigger cam along with the change in air/fuel ratio, you might just be wasting money in fuel with minimal or less engine efficiency. Just saying!
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+Bobby Fontenot if you already knew all this why did you ask that original question lol. The engine is tuned to compensate for all of those changes. You lose gas mileage because it is taking in more air and fuel to make more power. More horsepower means more fuel with an internal combustion engine which also means lower gas mileage. And no there's two up stream o2 sensors and two down stream after the cats. It can run without the downstream as long as you tune for it and the engine still gets information regarding the air to fuel ratio.

Watch my later videos. Might change your mind. But if you do want just the stock feel then definitely do just a whipple.
@erikbrown8289
@erikbrown8289 4 года назад
I will do that. Does it mess with your vvt ? I did a jk wrangler swap I’m more worried about the torque then hp I know the whipple puts 150 rwhp and doesn’t effect vvt but maybe if I can get a cam more made for torque ? I’m still trying to research lol
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 4 года назад
If you want a cam for torque then just stick to the stock cam. Most bigger cams are going to give you more torque but it is going to be in the higher rpm range causing it to feel sluggish off the line unless you put a higher stall torque converter. The higher stall definitely gets you in that torque/power range. But I guess it all depends on what you are doing with the Jeep.
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 4 года назад
Also, you can get a vvt cam so you don’t have to get rid of it.

@JohnVesely

+Manuel Mtz with any engine you typically want to let it idle for about 30 sec before putting it in to gear on a cold start up. But always let the engine fully warm up before you give it full throttle or anything like that.

@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 7 лет назад
+germz tailz all you have to change to get rid of the v4, if I understand your comment correctly, is to get either 8 new lifters and swap out the "dod" ones or just get all new lifters. Then swap out valve springs that will work with the size cam you'll have. No need to change rockers. Also you'd have to change the valley cover.
