There’s actually been a surprising amount of stories in the news lately about the contamination of agricultural food crops. Like run off from factory farms has contaminated a lot of crops, especially in areas where flooding has happened. Like I’m in Canada and there’s a big debate going around about whether or not fields that got flooded are safe to use to grow food.
If it was simply undercooking the lentils, this type of thing would be happening a lot more often and doctors wouldn’t be stumped at what was causing it. That’s my take at least. Reading all the personal stories on Reddit is insane.
it's the way i'm like "yh pay their medical bills" but not bc i think the company is at fault, just bc i'm english and i cannot fathom having to pay for treatment like that
If it is the crumbles, it might not necessarily be the lentils that are contaminated. It could be the leeks or some other ingredient especially if the plants were fertilized with manure. On the other hand, that's usually more of an issue for foods that you eat raw like lettuce or the strawberries mentioned in the video. Some bacteria and fungi do leave behind toxins that remain in the food even after the pathogens are killed by cooking.
The nutmeg thing reminds me of my husband trying to make a cake for his mom and stepdad's anniversary when he was like fourteen and it called for a cup of half and half and he thought that meant half salt half sugar. His mom says it was the worst cake she's ever had. 🤣
To be fair, and I doubt the instagram commenters know/knew this: most recalls end up being voluntary recalls since even if the FDA tells you you have to recall, as long as you go "oh okay yeah" it counts as voluntary. The only non-voluntary recalls are ones where companies don't comply with the FDA request to recall, which is pretty uncommon. Because of this, consumers might assume a "voluntary" recall is the company taking an abundance of caution while instead could be of any severity.
I mean, sometimes people just don't understand something, like that this is a standard term. Maybe instead of feeling animosity toward those people, you could try to educate them. A person can't be expected to know something if they have no experience with it and learning from others is how we grow.
@@jarsofglitter that's why it is your job to seek understanding before spouting an opinion. The burden of understanding is on the one wanting to share an opinion.
I sample soil microbes and work for a govt agency. The tests take a few days if everything is set up and runs smoothly. Government work involves quite a bit of red-tape and paperwork and is thus a bit slower than some people would like.
I know you're gonna be busy pretty soon here ☺️ but I just read about the lawsuit against Costco for animal cruelty to maintain their loss leader $4.99 rotisserie chicken (read on CNN). I'm interested in your take on the situation.
It's nice seeing you in my feed. I've followed you for so long it gives me such a sense of comfort and familiarity when you upload a video, even though the testing videos are of no interest to me since I live in Argentina and don't have access to any of those foods lol Anyway, always love these kind of "sciency" videos where you analize a topic and I get to understand more about food/health/regulations/procedures. Sure will miss you when you take a break to deliver the baby and take care of them. Hope everything unfolds nicely :) Take care!
I have never heard of people getting sick from lentils before, whether as a topping or eating a whole soup of it. Lentils is not a “dose makes the poison” type of food. There is some contaminant in their crumbles. Theories about Tara flower ingredient is currently being researched.
Side note - I once contacted the FDA to see how much requesting approval for a medication to be used for another diagnosis (one that isn't covered by my insurance but is commonly used "off label".) I wanted to see if I could fundraise the amount... I was told: ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Obviously those plans flew out the window.😔
god, twitter is so vile and obnoxious... so many people talking like mean girls and jumping at every scandal as an excuse to be nasty. because i dont believe that they care about this at all, from the way they talk about it. its just drama to them.
@@thatsalt1560 maybe im unfair to blame twitter, but i definitely think that kind of snappy and mean demeanour is rewarded there. you have to be snappy because of the character limit, and you have to be dramatic because outrage gets attention.. you cant argue with someone because no one cares to read it, you have to use buzz words against them. and that way its easy to just lie or spread misinformation.
Yes, Twitter and tiktok. Talking about current events or "drama" is fine, but the glee with which some of these girls do it is nauseating. They're so excited at the prospect of a company causing immense suffering to consumers because said company is elitist/promotes clean eating or some shit. Wtf
Lol the nutmeg reminds me of when I used purple carrot and they said to chop the garlic and I thought they meant to use the whole garlic and since I usually just use garlic powder and the serving size is for 2 I didn't think it was that weird. The flavor was so overpowering and I smelled like garlic for a couple days lol.
I did the same thing when I first learned to cook. I thought a 'clove' of garlic was the whole garlic bulb! The curry itself did actually come out delicious but I could live without having my entire apartment and all of my clothing smelling like garlic for two weeks!
Product liability is a big business for class action lawyers. Those that had been harmed by improperly handled food will get settlements but if it turns up a few pieces of the batch got tanited, the company can push the settlements on there supplier. But ultimately i believe daily harvest as a brand will be tarnished.
I completely agree with this take. I was a fan of Daily Harvest (even the overpriced oatmeal, which I will say was really good), but the cost and abundance of plastic made me lose interest. I feel like a 4-day turnaround to address this is honestly pretty good. Hopefully they will take the next steps to fully investigate everything and cover costs for those affected, but most companies it would take them weeks, or years even.
I have used Daily Harvest off and on for about two years. It is pricey, but very yummy. And I like to think most of it is pretty healthy. While there is an abundance of packaging, none of it is plastic. I get the smoothies, which are packaged in cardboard containers, the box is cardboard, the extra packaging material is cardboard. The only plastic is a thin sheet around the dry ice. Again, I still totally get that it's a lot of packing material, but it's all recyclable, at least.... (I agree on the price, though. Wish it was cheaper!) Maybe it used to be packaged in plastic, prior to two years ago, though, as I didn't get Daily Harvest before then.
I know this isn't the point of the video but when talking about the voluntary removal of Bendectin I think it's important to recognize the context that this took place right after Thalidomide was taken off the market because of the birth defects it caused. It makes sense that people would be afraid of taking sleep medication during pregnancy so shortly after learning a very popular sleep aid *did* cause severe birth defects.
We all know Unnatural Vegan would have been first on the list for Thalidomide. She doesn't seem to recognise the dangers of new scientific products at all. It takes years for some side effects to some out.
I think the company should acknowledge the customer immediately... So... as a person that ran a 22 million dollar/year soil business in my past. Personally in my experience all food batches have to be tested... even for soil (which is considered a food product at the volumes the company I worked for produced). I personally in that instance would test the product batch that was sent to the customer immediately (they should all be easily identifiable and traced easily and should always have a sample that's frozen) I would email all customers regardless about the complaint immediately and stress the safety procedures but also offer a refund. The loyalty you receive from being transparent (everyone knows things happen) is way better than advertising. lol too bad all these companies won't pay skilled management what it's worth lol I work for myself now. I posted this before I seen the end... we had a a lab (as should all food companies) it should take maybe 4-10 hours. While things can still spiral out of control that could have been heavily mitigated by immediate contact, immediate testing and also customer support. 4 days is insane
Their service seemed way overpriced. I just did not see the point. My sister worked for Home Chef for three days in March of 2020, and said it was a weird experience. The company was so weird about measuring exact ingredients, and there seemed to be a lot of food waste. There are even salad and stir fry kits at the grocery store you can get delivered with Instant Cart, and this is a cheaper option. There are even frozen fruits kits you can puree with almond or oat milk. Not sure why people think these meal kits are so convenient.
When I started seeing commercials for daily harvest, I thought that it would never last because it's so expensive. I'm shocked that they are now a billion dollar company. How do people afford that crap?!?
I haven't had anything from Daily Harvest, but in late 2019/ early 2020, I had a lot of issues with my gallbladder. I ended up with a gallstone that got stuck in my bile duct and it basically caused my liver to start to fail. My liver levels were AWFUL. Luckily my liver fully recovered after a few weeks. I did have to get my gallbladder removed though. It had nothing to do with what I was eating and was most likely genetics (almost every woman on both sides of my family have had their gallbladder removed). It is possible that a lot of people just had a bad gallbladder and also happen to use Daily Harvest. I'm glad they're looking into it further.
Sadly I don't think that's what happened for DH customers. It all seems to be linked to the specific product and they had no issues prior (according to firsthand accounts on the Reddit thread). :(
I want to know how much they are charging for raw lentils. Also, this is speculatory, but I wonder if maybe they used the wrong type of mushroom. Like their supplier gave them some poisonous mushrooms that were either cross contaminated because they are wild harvested.
I remember when Schwann's (OG frozen meal delivery) had food bourne illness outbreak in the 90's followed up with broken glass fragments "outbreak" in '05.
I could see people being negligent about cooking the lentils because they are vegan. There could be the assumption that because animal products aren't incorporated, food poisoning won't occur.
Four (4) days is not "fast" for announcing a food contamination issue, IMO. Maybe I am not as laissez-faire as some, but the sharp increase in food recalls issued in the USA is (supposedly) because of extra caution being used-and there are still more deaths in 2022 than 2021 or 2020 (that are related to recalled food). As far as I know, recall strategies are always executed immediately, even as they are under review, because these issues are very VERY serious- and if a company decided to put up a social media post or even a website post about potentially harmful food instead of contacting everyone who bought it through their online service IMMEDIATELY, I am never buying from that company again. This isn't even a grocery store product, they sell and ship directly to the individual, so they have a record of who bought it and they have their contact information. I don't think that's at all an unreasonable expectation.
I just can't get down with food sent through the mail. All my best to those who were sick. Having to have your gall bladder removed is no small thing. I would be pissed.
Produce outbreaks happen every year. This is why organic produce is so dangerous and risky. On a side note if I'm paying them...they better come fully cooked.
The thing of it is that all this food is processed food and the chances of it being tainted by human hands or even dirty machinery is quite high. Yes this is going to sound judgmental but a lot of the stuff is for people who just like to spend money I think or to be on point with the latest food fad.
Not to be offensive and honestly I despise being THAT (often times hypocritical) European but the American protestant/puritan justicialist culture of torches and pitchforks is pretty stifling… Isn’t it absurd how it finds its ways in every matter and controversy and litigation
@@thatsalt1560 I mean… my experience comes from twitter and reddit but… I see Americans of all demographics and beliefs really obsessed with pinpointing Good and bad, Right and wrong, Truth and deceit… this very often translates in constantly assuming everyone has bad intentions, seeing everyone as guilty until proven innocence, “witch huntings”, “cancel culture”… I don’t see that being as prevalent in Europe… yet… but then again, I don’t want to be THAT guy that laughs at Americans for x, y and z. I really like the US.
Could people just be figuring out they’re allergic to or have an intolerance towards lentils? I mean after all the average omnivore doesn’t eat then very often.
I came here from Swell Entertainment's video- not super important, but just an FYI. I personally feel like you were a bit too dismissive of some people's issues with Daily Harvest (not the hyper-aggressive ones, obviously), because a lot of the original emails sent out weren't very appropriate from the level of severity people claimed their reactions to the product were. These original emails were also very few and far between, seemingly primarily, if not only, sent to influencers who received the products for free. That combined with the distasteful first post about the product by the company on their social media made me feel like DH didn't really take the reports seriously at first. There have also been reports in the past where customers had received products that contained inedible objects or even foods where allergens were not even marked on the product ingredients, such as coconut (how substantiated these claims are, I can't say, but it's just far too many claims in my opinion). I'm not going to call you a shill or tell you that I think your dismissiveness was entirely unjustified, just that I personally felt you either didn't know the full scope or don't have a very deep sympathy for the people potentially effected by this situation. Your language did change into a tone I appreciated a lot more towards the end of the video, though. I'll give you that. So I'm not going to accuse you of not caring either. I just think this is very different from a vaccine scare at this point. I guess this is a situation where I'm going to take a bit from both you and Swell Entertainment: Daily Harvest is both entirely too expensive to take a potential risk to my health 'and' far too unwilling to take customer concerns seriously from the get-go. Is it the lentils, the leeks, poisonous mushrooms, or someone who sneezed too hard at their station? Who knows. It's too pricy of a risk for me. One thing I think we can both agree on is that no company, even a billion dollar one, should be required to pay the medical bills of a person if there's zero evidence of their medical issues being the cause of the company. I think their $10 off coupon offers were stupid though.
I had an instinct to stop my subscription a few months ago… so grateful I listened to my intuition 😇🔮 Also the smoothies had been making me sick, but I thought that was just a me thing lmfao (I have a ginger allergy and I’m pretty sure there was ginger in the smoothies that allegedly didn’t contain them)
All processed food has the potential for being tainted by it’s very nature of being processed. It may be vegan but it’s still processed by human hands or machines.
I am not saying that the liver damage was not real. All I was saying was that something else could have caused the liver damage and they thought it was the lentil crumbles it could have been anything in those lentil crumbles .
I forgot to worry about your impending delivery, lol. To your health! This is exciting, though, I bet all the littles are excited. I think it probably being your last baby makes it extra exciting, and they'll probably be super dope just like my little sister is, learning from me of course. ☺️
I made empanadas with these crumbles inside a couple weeks ago and my whole family was fine lol. I cooked them for a while with other spices before baking them inside the empanada dough.
The comparison to the COVID-19 vaccine was dismissive and honestly gross. Changed my upvote into a downvote right away, and I had been pretty happy you were talking about this until that point. Sigh.
Since you're so pro-vax, you should do a video talking about the increases in adolescent strokes, blood disorders, and heart issues. People on the other side of the aisle are linking these symptoms to the covid vaccine and using it as more ammo in their fight.
Sounds like mass hysteria, not uncommon in the US, plus the fact 20% of GDP is spent on healthcare means there's a lot of sick people all the time. While there might be a small chance of some sort of contamination but more likely oh I had a small stomach ache or whatever. Reminds me of Chinese restaurant syndrome. No where else on planet earth suffered from this non existent issue, just the US.
Honestly if I buy an overpriced lentil toppings I would assume it's cooked. Regardless obviously people should follow the instructions, but we can still be not dismissive
They might be young, they might just not have done much cooking before. Something that seems like common sense when you have lots of experience of doing something is not be necessarily obvious to someone with less experience.
@@orpheliaolivia I think it's likely many assume it's cooked because it is one of those meal services. It's maybe no so obvious what needs to be cooked and what already was.
@@orpheliaolivia Agreed, and at first I assumed this was possibly the issue at fault. However, after reading the original Reddit thread, it seems that everyone affected did indeed cook it long enough before eating!
This video is a joke. Are you on the Daily Harvest payroll? There is a Daily Harvest direct link to at least 1000 customers (my wife included) who became ill from this product.
