This is a visualization of daily snow depth for the continental United States from January 1, 1950 through December 31, 2015. A faster version of this time-lapse can be found here: • Daily U.S. Snow Depth ...
The underlying snow depth data was extracted from daily weather records from the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). All data is freely available on NOAA's National Climate Data Center website (www.ncdc.noaa....) .
Spatial interpolation was performed using Python-based QGIS (www.qgis.org/) . The video was created using ffmpeg and Avisynth.
The code used to generate the maps and timelapse video is available on GitHub: github.com/srn... .
Please keep in mind that the interpolation is not perfect and, at times, will show some locations (particularly those close to mountains in the West) as having snow when in reality they did not.
Some snowstorms of historical note can be viewed at the following times:

Profound visualization which shows that our individual experiences and remembering do not match to those of people on other also nearby places. Additionaly it is a hint that global change of climate can not even be experienced or calculated by the dates of 1 winter time. Only a long time summary of all dates to each position in landspape, and then a long time trend calculation will show the effect.

In particular, I enjoyed watching the 1993 and 1996 winter seasons. In 1993, there was almost no snow that winter in SE KY, then bam, March Superstorm was color showing up for snow depth all the way to the Gulf. 1996 was a heck of a snowy season in my area with tons of snow storms. We are really lacking in the snow in more recent years.

January 1985 brought incredibly cold weather to the entire eastern 2/3rds of the country. It nearly completely destroyed the orange crop in Florida. It reached 10 degrees in Gainsville, FL. Many all-time record lows were set that month that are still on the books. It was -24 in Knoxville and -5 in Charlotte. It wasn't likely as cold in south central Texas, but the moisture was there and it met incredibly cold air to bring snow to areas that very rarely see it.
@TomWatsonB1
@TomWatsonB1 4 года назад
@@tripplefives1402 I am aware that West Texas frequently gets snow, but West Texas is a large area and Southwest Texas is different than the panhandle around Amarillo. In 1985, there was a significant snowfall in areas of SW Texsa that rarely get snow. For example, Del Rio, on the Rio Grande, averages 1.2 inches of snow a year (about the same as Dallas), but they had a rare, large snowfall that year. Snowfall totals were even greater slightly east toward Uvalde, additionally. San Antonio, only 85 miles from Uvalde, averages less than an inch of snow per year, so that was a historic snowfall for Uvalde. Amarillo, which is more where people think of when they mean West Texas, averages around 18 inches of snowfall per year, so we can see the 7.5 hour drive between Uvalde and Amarillo makes a big difference. Yes, Texas and even just West Texas is a big place.
@TomWatsonB1
@TomWatsonB1 4 года назад
@@tripplefives1402 At second glance the main brunt of the snow is actually more focused over areas around Kerrville and Bandera, which is slightly more NW of San Antonio than directly west. Nonetheless, the Hill Country also rarely gets snowfall. It averages very little more snowfall than San Antonio (around an inch). Even less than in Dallas.

Living in Maine, I wish this map continued right through winter 2017-2018 because 2016, we had almost nothing. 2017 we got buried, and this year we saw some snowfall from December-February but March we got two back to back 20 inch snowstorms so it'd be cool to see those years on a map like this one
@hendomac20
@hendomac20 3 года назад
Well now it 2021 and a new version really should be made to include up to the end of 2020. 2019 was a repeat of 2017 except it was like what my grandmother told me about the winter of 68-69, haha 50 years later. 2020 we had snow in May for the whole state like an inch. Plus covid made it feel more like hell then ever to live through it. Imagine we get snow in May this year. Sugarloaf Mountain might get a foot tomorrow as I'm writing this on April 15th.

It might only snow an inch or 2 in Seattle every 2-3 years but it snows a little more in the foothills/east suburbs. This past February of 2019 we got 16 inches of snow , but it only stayed that way for 4 days. I couldn't even get my car out of my driveway. Meanwhile that same week it also snowed 1-5 inches in and around Las Vegas too.

Recently, especially in the Northeast, snow storms have gotten worst, but the total number of them has decreased. It’s now 2020, here in NJ, no snow :( hopefully that improves. Also thanks for the time-lapse.
@paull2937
@paull2937 Год назад
It improved in February 2021 with 30 inches of total snow, 1 foot+ deep snow cover stayed the first 3 weeks of February, lingering into early March. Again in January 2022 with 22 inches of total snow. Winter 2020 was the worst (in terms of being boring). Only about 8 inches of snow fell the entire winter, and I think most of it fell in December with nothing at all in February. (I live in southern Connecticut, so depending on where you live in NJ, I might have slightly more or slightly less snow than you on average.)
@Spagine

@@paull2937I think you need to edit that and put 2023 as the most boring winter
@paull2937
@paull2937 Год назад
@@Spagine No, if I had the choice to relive winter 2019-2020 or winter 2022-2023, I’d choose 2023 (even without the pandemic). Even though winter 2020 had slightly more snow and this winter only had 5.5 inches, there were other interesting things going on even though it wasn’t an ideal winter. There was a -46°F temperature change in 24 hours on December 23-24 when it went from 52°F to 8°F which is the most drastic change in weather I’ve ever experienced. January was the extremely boring month. And on the morning of February 4th, I went outside and it was -4°F, the coldest temperature I’ve ever experienced. It felt absolutely amazing. Winter 2020 at its best only reached 9°F. And in addition to that, just 120 miles to my north in Vermont, it was snowing like crazy and there were great skiing conditions. In winter 2020 I never got to go skiing.
