Starting and operating a flat belt driven hay press built by the Dain Manufacturing Company and powered by an early model Fairbanks Morse Z 20hp elevator engine. Hay presses were an early form of mechanized bale making machines that required multiple people to operate, modern balers are direct decedents of these ingenious devices. Founded by furniture dealer, Joseph Dain Sr., the Dain Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1890 in Carolltown, Missouri to build farm machinery and five years later struck a deal with Deere and Company to distribute it's patented hay-making equipment throughout the U.S. and Canada. Production moved to Ottumwa, Iowa in the first decade of the 20th century and was formally acquired by John Deere in 1911. Despite being wholly owned by Deere, Dain maintained its autonomy and production facilities until the late 1940's and the Ottumwa machinery plant is still owned by John Deere to this day for tractor production.
