So much to take in in this interesting video. I never tire of seeing the cows being milked and food. Some are rather curious, some a bit cantankerous. I have rarely seen a young man so knowledgeable and so hard working. Good on you, Eric.
man these cows get more nutrition packed grains, oats, etc with more vitamins and proteins than your average joe. you guys clearly care about your cows. props
when I teach, I wear my 10th Gen black cap with the leather patch...kids are fascinated about the smell...I tell them about you, your dairy/farm, and how you work with family to be successful...keep ,going...
How often do these cows have their feet trimmed? Are you checking for unusual marks and wear every time they come into the milking parlor? How often does trimming happen once spring/summer rolls around and they spend more time in the grass? Seems like your dairy farm runs really well being the size that it is, how many part time or volunteer people do you have when it’s super busy? You should make an aerial map of the farm so we can see what’s where and how everything rotates, animals and crops and equipment. Other videos show their farms and I’d have to say, I’d love to be a cow at your farm, not so much on others, unless it’s in Idaho! Can’t beat those Mountain Views.
Their hired hoof trimmer comes to the farm about once per month. On their farm, they have each cow's hooves trimmed about once per year, so they do a small batch of cows each month throughout the year. They also look for any cows with sore hooves, and take care of them, if needed.
have you ever been kicked by a cow while milking? my grand father owned multiple different dairy farms over his lifetime and told us a story of him getting kicked in the mouth once. he said he got a mouth full of water to wash away the blood and all of a sudden water started squirting out of a hole below his bottom lip 😂
He fared better than my grandfather. He got kicked in the head by one of his cows. It was fatal. That's pretty rare though. I think. Both my grandfaters were gone before I was born. My other grandfather worked on the railroad and got hit by a train.
It would be interesting to know what the people that complain, would suggest as a alternative, Maybe picking the pests and weeds on their hands and knees?
Just do research on the effects of glyphosate... As a consumer, it's not my job to tell the farmer how to operate. I can just choose which products I buy. I understand why he does it. I can't slight him for that. But it's a nasty, nasty chemical
Can I see every time you put minerals in you use 5 gallon buckets, ma’am make a suggestion to save yourself time at least every day on the weekend Saturday Sunday whenever you have an extra hour, you could buy X number of 5 gallon buckets pre-mix and measure all the mineral that would go into that batch and number buckets 123 whatever number a bucket you need for each batch that way you don’t have to measure them out every time everything is pre-measured ready to go so you also don’t have Open bags of mineral that rodents might get into and it stays fresher longer
Absolutely. Depending on milk production, and the temperature inside the barn, a Holstein dairy cow can drink over 35 gallons of water per day. You can see one of their water troughs at 0:20.
Your cows milk must be so yummy and creamy. Your cows be eating really good. Everything about you and your farm is impressive. Your father must be so proud! Do you want your kids to grt into farming?
Good morning Eric. You will always get some people that want to get on you about this and that on the farm. From what i have seen on your videos, you are a very responsible farmer and do what is safe. As always, great video. Hoping the sore throat goes away very soon.
Another great video of a work day on your dairy farm. The cows look happy and contented in the barns. Its great to see you are spending the money to re-groove the alleyways to keep the cows safe from slipping over. Chris from Victoria, Australia.
Eric, I’m sure the naysayers are a pain to deal with, but all of your true fans/followers know the hard work that you and your family put into your farm! I hope you and your family have a great weekend! Love from Oklahoma!
IDK if you will read this Eric @10th Generation Dairyman maybe grinding the middle of the calf parlor would help in the winter making a less slippery when iced up... thoughts just an idea. 🤔🙏💜
I've just got this to say - please continue to be realistic. Starving isn't cool. Yes, it's good that you don't overuse but when it's needed, it's needed. What are you supposed to do? Let bugs eat the crop. Cows don't get fed they starrve, they starve we don't get milk. Same if they die of an infection that antibiotics would stop. Sure no one likes using spray and antibiotics but sometimes they're necessary.
I very much admire all your hard work and the sheer amount of knowledge and skills that you have to have as a farmer... but I can't eat the food you produce because of the glyphosate. It literally makes me ill within hours of eating something that was sprayed with it (wheat, oats,) or any meat or dairy from animals that were fed food that was "roundup-ready". And I don't buy it for my family, either.
It's been a while since there's been a milking/feeding video. Love it when the cows just stick their heads in it when the feed is coming out. Interesting to see how you are always adjusting the feed to make it better and all the things you do to make the crop better. I appreciate how you are always trying to make things... better! 👍
Hi from the uk uk dairy farmers are having a bad time at moment milk price has dropped from highs of 50pence per litre to 37 pence production cost are approx 40 -42 per litre how's the milk price in the US obviously you use imperial measures great videos
Cows are so curious when it comes to things that intrigue them, like your camera. I can understand what your saying about folks commenting about concerns with the herbicide, not a fan of it either. But hey, sometimes a farmer has to take so action to fix a problem. Anyways, I hope it all goes well for you, and I hope you have a great weekend.
People say shouldn’t be spraying….it’s an opinion but not always educated. My uncle has worked as a custom applicator for 30 years. His comment is glyphosate is less harmful then table salt.
Sometimes I wonder why I'm watching these videos and then I see it. When the cows stick their faces into the jet of fodder and go, "Aughabaugaboo! Make it rain, daddy!"
Thanks for the video and you know what is best chemicals to use on your farm don't worry what others say you just keep doing what is right for your farm.
