Daisy & Cameron Flow Hive beekeeping and honey harvesting in the UK 

We had sixty chickens at one point but gave some away and ate some. I do love chickens they're so gentle and such cool animals! it's fun to throw corn cobs that are left over outside and let them get the scraps off of it. Also from feeding them our leftover corn we had two corn plants start to grow but winter came so they will germinate next year.

That's great James! Yes, they really can pick corn cobs clean like nothing else! They also go nuts over tomatoes :)

I watch your videos all the time and you are a good beekeeper, you taught me a lot about how to install packages and recover swarms and stuff. We are going to buy some hives this year and start in spring so I'm excited, but is Colorado a good place to do beekeeping?

Great question! What Flow Hives have changed is the way we harvest honey. The basic hive design and the principles of pest and disease management and bee husbandry are the same Flow Hives as it is for traditional hives. To do this, you need to open up the hive to inspect for pests and disease, this is an important part of beekeeping to ensure your bees stay healthy.- Leah.

When you have placed your bees in the brood box you will need to wait until they are fully established before adding the super box with the Flow Frames. This can take anywhere between 2-8 weeks depending on whether you used a nuc or package of bees, and also depends on how many resources there are available for the bees. Once you have added the Super the time that it takes to fill with honey depends on the amount of nectar available for the bees and how strong the colony is. We have had Flow Supers fill in a week during peak times of the flowering season. A super usually fills well within a month during the spring and summer. I hope this helps :)

Hi Jesse, We have found that the Flow Frame comb itself should not need cleaning if it stays within the hive as the bees do a great job of keeping it clean. If you remove the Flow Frames from the hive for storage, they may need cleaning as they can attract debris depending on your storage method. You can do this by using hot water (just hot enough to melt wax - recommended up to 70°C), a hot water hose tends to work well. Set the Flow comb to ‘cell open’ position, this allows the water to flow quite easily through all parts of the frame. It is likely that most of the wax and propolis will remain on the frame, which should not be an issue as the bees will recycle this - the main purpose is to ensure that the frame is clean enough to be re-added to the hive. We have designed the honey trough at the bottom of the frame so that any remaining honey can drip back into the hive for the bees to use. If the leak back point remains clear this works well, however, if the bees seal it, sometimes you end up with a little honey in the trough at the bottom which may need cleaning out prior to your next harvest. This can be easily done by unblocking the leak back point with the tongue of your Flow tube or a small implement. - Sam

No the saw dust is natural and no chemicals are used to make the smoke plugs
