I refuse to go higher than a 5K in this series which the 5000 is definitely on the heavy side in weight itself. Honestly, if memory serves me right the 4500/5000 are very similar in weight if not the same. That being said, I myself have a 3K, 3500H, two 4Ks, and a 5K, didn’t pay over $100 on any some were new and they don’t just catch fish, if you use em right they handle em. 💪

This is one of, if not the best, how to video on RU-vid. Great job from start to finish. My reel got hit with a rogue wave which made my reel feel like a sandy mess. This helped me get it back to running smoothly.

Have two of these reels and recently one started to jam. Found this video, stripped it down, and put it back together. First time I've done this and I don't have anything close to an engineer's mind. Quite straight forward, apart from minute 39 when you quietly couple the cam gear with the main shaft! Didn't see that first time around so had to go back in a second time! Otherwise a very useful film! Thanks.

Just wanted to personally thank you for this video as I had a bearing retaining clip pop out and I couldn't figure how to get it back in. The cut q-tip method was the trick! I held a small pen light in my teeth to illuminate the bearing lip and that helped as well. As a side note, (and you probably already know this now), but the extra plastic washer under the spool is to adjust the line load angle to help prevent backlashes...according to Daiwa. This explains why some reels have it and some don't as some people have used it to set the spool a bit lower on the shaft. Thank you!

Great video! Thanks Tackle Advisors. But... I've just opened up my new 2500 for some preventive maintenance and found out that there are small differences between models. There can be a washer at the screw holding the case-bumper (at 16:20) sitting between the bumper and the case. It's not shown here nor in the shematics but both my 1500 and 2500 have it. The top cap covering the A-R clutch at 17:20 can sit on two tiny brass washers not shown in this video. There is also an arrow on the top cap that needs to point upwards > towards the foot of the reel. So beware and keep a REALLY close eye on all the parts in your particular model.

It's so awesome to have these detailed teardown's when in the market for reels. I strip mine down each year for cleaning and it's nice to see how they are designed internally. Have you considered doing a video at some point of all the different tools, lubes, oils, and cleaners you prefer for your reel maintenance?

Serviced a BG 6500 today of a surf fisherman. Had a raspy noise, relatively new reel maybe 10 trips nothing crazy treating it. Said he'd tried to service it himself and it came out raspy. Turns out your cotton swab turned upside down to reset the non handle side bearing is important. He'd taken something hard trying to reset that bearing completely to out the retaining clip on. The entire cover of the bearing was chattered and dented. Took the covers off the bearing and it spun beautifully. Put the covers back on and it was raspy. I ended up packing the two main gear bearings which eliminated 75% of the raspy sound but it's a good lesson to share I thought. I love these reels and HATE that design. That non handle side bearing and retaining clip is a pain and I don't really understand why they designed it that way.

I let a friend of mine borrow my BG6500 to do some surf fishing in NC. Got it back and it felt fine but over the next 6 weeks it got a little choppy. I opened it up and it was FULL of salt. Every nook and cranny was full of salt. The gearbox had salt chunks all over it, under the drag knob, under the rotor, the handle. The only places there was no salt was the actual drag washers and the AR clutch and sleeve. It was 10,000 times worse inside that it felt when spinning it. My buddy must have dropped it in the surf, went for a swim with it, something crazy. I broke it down entirely. Ultrasonic and a bowl of vinegar were helpful but a scrub pad and steel wool were best. It's got a decent gear grind now but it's fishable. Glad I didn't let him borrow my Saltiga.

best like for your great job. With too much grease the reel will be not smooth and light as brand new, but when retrieving a fish there is no difference. It sounds weird but the best time you grease it up is the first time you unbox the reel, before getting this to the sea.

Thanks brotha! HELL YEAH....I had a touch of the flu when filming it...so hopefully that has an impact on views...lol As a surf caster for decades....it's only recently we have a bunch of sealed options out there. It used to be just VS, saltiga z and the mitchell banana....NOw penn torque, Zeebass, saragosa, spheros, shield etc offer waterproofing. This method of protecting reels has been done for many years...in fact we used to fully pack the entire cavity of some reels. Hey ...did i respond to your question about the ferrofluid? The stuff i use is VSG 203a.....it's what Ferrotec recommended for my purpose. It's friggin expensive..70-100$ for 3ml. They gave me a 3ml sample. Contact Shipwreck who is a member on stripers online.com he should be able to send you some (in order to PM him you need to be a member. It's show season and he's the head daiwa rep so he's a bit bogged down. But worth the effort tracking him down. Can't find the comment but I asked you about a slight noise at the bottom of the spool cycle and you said it could be a bent spool shaft. You were correct I replaced the spool shaft and low and behold it was butter yet again. 6500 size and it's so easy to work on given the larger parts. Not than any reels are rocket science contrary to some RU-vid reviewers who don't even open them up. Still not sure how someone can "test a reel" let's say without knowing how it works.

I have several old silver series reels that I've used for DECADES, and I will say without question that even though they aren't as smooth or sophisticated as these modern reels, they will easily outlast them with proper maintenance. I've gotten rid of some of my modern reels because they've turned out to be junk. Just my experience and opinion.
@christopherjenkins2373
@christopherjenkins2373 3 года назад
@@Belvedere3834spd I think your experience and opinion are spot on! I was talking to a friend a minute ago about fishing with our 1950s vintage large Luxor No. 3 reels. To me there have been only a very few reels built since those Luxors that even have a chance at competing with them. Just this afternoon I got a mint Mitchell 498 Super. PPUM saltwater reel you simply can’t believe. I also just finished together a beautiful Mitchell 396 from parts and put on a NOS gray spool and Mitchell high speed handle. That reel can cast better than almost any modern reel. I know I’m extremely biased but I see no need to purchase modern reels even with their extraordinary features when I know they have no chance of standing the rest of time. My negative feelings and bad experiences with modern reels started with a Quantum Cabo Saltwater Reel that I bought for a lot of money that didn’t last 5 years. This was in spite of the fact that I meticulously take care of my reels. Never again!

Really enjoyed the tutorial! My fishing buddy bought the same reel on my recommendation. After a couple of months it started binding which usually means the shaft was bent. I had one helluva time getting that shaft out. The bend was right where the shaft enters the slide. I just got lucky. Put the flat end of the shaft in a vise and prayed. It slipped right into the slide with no bind and the reel has been working ever since. I was surprised the shaft was so wimpy where everything else in the bg was overbuilt.Sure wish your tutorial was around when I took the reel apart.

One more tip.... since the BG doesn’t have the nice case gasket that the Penn Slammer does. You can seal the case if you run a small bead of RTV on the cover before it’s installed. You can also seal the black cap that screws on opposite the handle. Nice video just thought i would share the info.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
I get that and it would work. But grease would work just as well. water getting in between the frame and sideplate and non handle cap are more often than not. Not the issue. And any gaps can be filled just as effectively with grease. And deep water dunks will get in from the ar clutch and main shaft areas anyway. Which is why it's not really worth it. For the Cabo that has an ar clutch seal and nothing else...maybe. but not the bg. Good idea though....FYI...i tried this with rtv 2 with the Gosa FA 10 years ago :)

I love lube and I go pretty hard on the lube with my BG's because I had one get FULL of salt. At the same time, I feel like so much of this grease is just gonna end up in the case, not really doing much but being it's awesome sticky self. Maybe that's the idea but as soon as those gears mesh that's a lot of grease that's squeezing out into the case. I use a product called tefgel for where the two sides of the case interact and it does well.

That aquashield grease looks a lot like marine grease, green sticky, and hard to clean up. But it works, I’ve used it in my John Deere lawn tractor.

So do you recommend the aqua shield now that it's been a while? I just purchased the BG 4000. My 2500 is due and just wondering. Great video I've already watched it twice. My wife thinks I'm watching porn.

Just an FYI if anyone did what I did with that silly little clip that holds down the non gear side bearing. If that clip shoots off into the abyss never to be found again, and you don't want to pay to have a 50 cent piece shipped to you, you can make one that at least for me is easier to work with. I just took a piece of #5 single strand wire and made a circle slightly smaller than the piece the bearing sits over. I just use two micro screwdrivers to spread it out slightly so it fits over and into the gap. Bearing doesn't slide over the wire at all so it does the same job. To get it out just find the end of one side, push down, and the opposite side will move up. From there you're good to go. I did run the sharp ends of the circle on a piece of sand paper just so they're not sharp, but that's probably unnecessary. If you already have the tool to make loops in wire it's a 30 second process.

I own 5 Daiwa Certate’s and I’m probably going to sell all of them and buy 5 BG’s. Amazing reel for the money.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
LOL....those certates are sweet! Can't believe they sold so poorly in japan that US dealers were allowed to buy JDM stock and retail them here for half price. Figured based on looks alone it would a killer against the twinpower. The HD versions are saltigas bj's with a step down in gearing (which is more than adequate)

Really....Damn...I'd sell em if it were me...I'm having a furious internal debate as whether or not I should sell off my 08 stella sw's.... I like them better than the current ones....but new ones are coming in a year...and gotta strike while the iron is hot.....If you go two gens out..the value drops out.

I recently used Penn precision grease in two of my Daiwa BG 5000. First I applied it as it is but the reel became too hard. Then opened both of them again mixed 50 50 ratio of penn grease and synthetic motor oil. Now it spins light.

Will this set that you have in the amazon list come with the needed tools for this? Wera 2035/2050 PH 00 - 01/7 Kraftform Micro Slotted/Phillips Precision Screwdriver Set been meaning to invest in a good set. i have various reels, penn, shimano, daiwa. love your channel, i wish i found it sooner.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Glad you enjoy it!! That set will cover quite a bit. Keep in mind...tons of reels now use torx bits.....ugghhh..And lot of different sizes. Additionally a size 0 with a larger handle may be helpful if you run into lock tighted screws or ones that have been corroded. As would a larger handled size 1. I use the pozidrivs for that amzn.to/2ExuHc2 Plus on shimano spool shafts you have to use a .9 mm hex (that little screw is under the spool and holds the spool support in place. Torx down to size six are common on shimano and daiwa

Awesome video If you dunked the reel in salt water, would you perform a complete teardown afterwards? Or does all the grease you are using in theory prevent any water getting to the parts? If you do planning on teardown water a dunk, what's the benefit of the generous amount of grease? I ask this because I used to also pack it with grease, now I rather put less and teardown more frequently

Hello , I just bought a bg 3000 last week and I’ve been spinning all days,today the reel start to be hard to crank and I’m feeling the vibration on the tooth engaging between the main gear and the pinion. I’m going to sent it back to Daiwa, but what could to be the problem ? Thanks and continue the good work on the channel
@naumanahmadtariq8717
@naumanahmadtariq8717 4 года назад
if you tighten the side plate too much it will press the pinion and main gear against each other and gears will not mesh together properly. Also the back of the main gear will touch the side plate while rotating.
@naumanahmadtariq8717

If u keep the side plate too loose then u will feel play in the handle. Just tighten the screws medium.

awesome video with great details , i d like if, you have spare time of course , to upload a bg nero the non magsealed edition . Assuming that more or less all kind of mechanisms that exists out there are more or less the same but still i d like to watch. Also wondering if the line roller from this bg can fit into the newer edition cause at my opinion this one is way better than the new model . Thank you in advance and keep up the excellent work . @Dasato123
@Dasato123 6 лет назад
Daiwa indicates that the BG has a roller bearing. Apparently this is not the case. It has a bushing? Also it's supposed to have 6 + 1 roller bearing. I only saw 5 bearings. Are they counting the AR clutch as a bearing? Can you clear up this discrepancy? Saw the specs for the Daiwa Exceler LT 4000. 6 oz. lighter and 26 # max drag vs 17 # for the BG. Greater line cap. 20$ cheaper. What do you think? Great vid. Watched the whole thing even though I don't own the reel. Since cleaning is an important part of owning a reel this vid is more informative than watching some guy fishing with it.
