This is C. Vision's full video covering Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern's east end, between Winona, Minnesota and Waseca, Minnesota, with additional coverage of DM&E trains over the IC&E Owatonna Subdivision, and Union Pacific's Albert Lea Subdivision. SD40 and SD40-2 locomotives are seen operating in a multitude of paint schemes, with ICE, DME, CP, STL&H, and CITX units appearing throughout the video. DM&E GP40 and GP38-3 locomotives are also documented on several local freights and road trains, as well as a special passenger train operated for DM&E shippers and their families.
Beginning in Winona, we take a quick look back to the 1990s, as a CP crew works at Tower CK with a pair of SOO GP15C Caterpillar locomotives. Next, the DM&E gets into the act with a "west train" powered by SD9s and an SD40-3. From there, we head west across the Waseca Subdivision as it works its way out of the Mississippi River Valley, and up the steep 1.7% grade between Stockton and Lewiston. From there, the tracks make their way through farm fields and small towns, as the route traverses the rolling countryside of southeastern Minnesota. We visit Rochester, see trains climbing Byron Hill east of Byron, Minnesota, and explore several other points of interest before arriving in Owatonna. From Owatonna, we'll take a side trip over former Milwaukee Road rails, as we follow the Owatonna Sub to Austin, Minnesota and Mason City, Iowa. On this line, you'll enjoy the rhythm of 90-pound jointed rail, as heavy trains pound along at decent speeds. We then see a northbound Mason City to Waseca freight sprinting north on UP's Spine Line, and taking the junction at Curtis to connect to the Hartland Subdivision for the trip to Waseca. From there, we cover the final miles of the Waseca Sub between Owatonna and Waseca.
As seen in the thumbnail, DM&E and IC&E still employed several classic Griswold crossing signals at the time of production. Shortly before they were removed from service, we captured two pairs of these signals still equipped with rotating stop signs.
This was an exciting time on the DM&E, as the railroad was revitalized with track improvements and new traffic in the years leading up to the purchase by Canadian Pacific. Our coverage spans between 1996 and 2011, with most scenes documented shortly before and after the CP takeover.
Thank you to all who helped with the production of this program.

I worked for DM&E out of Waseca when I was furloughed from UP. That was in 2010. In my 11 years on the railroad, that was probably the best time in my career. This brings back a lot of good memories for me so I appreciate the work you put into this.

I lived in Rochester Mn 1981 to 1995. I worked at Barlow’s then Napa next door, then across the tracks to Pizza Hut so I had 3 jobs with lots of exposure to the DM&E. I was working at Pizza Hut the night that the big derailment was just west of the bridge where I think it was highway 14 does an S curve going under the tracks. I don’t remember if that was 1992, 1993 or 1994? I remember the westbound train getting into Rochester with 2 or 3 locomotives and only a dozen or so freight cars and I remembered being puzzled by it. The next morning local radio stations shared that there was a derailment east of Rochester the night before. One of my uncles was on his way home to Plainview and went by the location of that derailment just before it happened.

@CVisionProductions1
@CVisionProductions1 2 года назад
Thank you for watching! To answer your question, yes, they were two separate railroads. Early on, the symbol for the train bound for the IC&E was WAICE. That changed to HUBRC, then HUCC (CC was Chicago Clearing) during the DM&E’s final years. When the CP took over, they began routing the trains via Winona. Symbols were changed to 488/489. Since then, they’ve been 486/487, 276/277, 470/471, and now 254/255.

I grew up in and still live in Rochester. Unfortunately through much of the pre-CP takeover, I wasn't old enough to drive but luckily when I got my license, I was able to get the last few years (including 2012) of DM&E power in action. Since the DM&E glory days, many of the customers served by the DM&E have since moved on to delivery by tractor trailer instead of rail. Much of the jointed track on this line has become welded track. The Rochester coal plant has since been shut down. There has been an increase in ethanol and grain trains due to more grain and ethanol businesses established at various locations along this line and the RCPE. But now days, unfortunately, most of manifest traffic just passes through, going to and from the RCPE. Also the classic EMD power has unfortunately become a rarity on the east end of the DM&E, now that CP owns it.
