Dale’s 1971 Dodge Demon 340 Gets Fixed! Tuning The Edelbrock AVS 2

Dale’s Demon is back! On today’s episode, I finally figure out what’s wrong with the Edelbrock AVS 2… a sticky accelerator pump check ball. That’s all it was. But, in the interim, the shiny chrome alternator started vibrating to pieces, causing a toasted brush, exciting fireworks, and a dead battery. Anyway, it’s fixed now. And short of a little bit more needle tuning, it’s pretty much restored. Oh yeah… oil pan and intake gaskets… that’s fine.

Awesome video! Glad your tuning on the Edelbrock, I ditched the Holley on my Demon for a Edelbrock and am very pleased as far as street driving, if I was racing I'd probably go back to a Holley. My favorite carburetor of all time is still the Carter AVS.

Cool video!! I like how instead of buying a new carb you take what you got and make it work . You save money and you learn alot more on how thing work.

Bingo. Eventually I may well put a double pumper on it. But I think I can get a long ways with what I have.

Dale that 340 reminds me so much of both of my neighbors one had a 340 duster and the other one had a 340 dart they both were four speeds like yours and I've got big blocks and a HEMI y but those three 40s have just got a neat sound you could hear him coming up uh all the way down the street compared to the chevies running roughshod around town. you know they're just a total difference in the sound so neat to hear it and yeah that is a pretty car very pretty car enjoy

Yeah, they’re real screamers. Big blocks are fun too, but the 340 is something special. Now that I’m getting the carb dialed in, the engine is actually reviving happily up to the top and I’m hearing it come alive. It’s pretty impressive. By the way, I’m Jamie, but I call the car Dale’s Demon. Dale is my friend who custom ordered the car brand new, and took care of it for 51 years. I knew him for years before he decided he was ready to sell, and several more years until I was finally able to buy. Even though it’s mine now, it will always be Dale’s Demon to me. I hope that makes sense. Haha.

You can use a 7/16" drill bit for a gauge between the gasket and the end of the float, opposite the seat and needle.

Thanks for the tip! I have more Edelbrock nightmares to deal with in the near future - I’ll check the next one that way.

My 1st guess on the hesitation was the mechanical advance in the distributer.

I replaced the engine. That fixed it 😅 I still don’t understand what the issue with the 340 was.

FYI Jamie I can't begin to tell you how many carb kits I have got with bad eccelorator pumps and they were new kits.

Interesting. My experience with Carter / Edelbrock so far has been that it’s never actually the pump, it’s always passage blockage or stuck check ball.

I hope so! I really wanted to this year. We had tentatively planned on it. It overlapped with the end of the school year and I didn’t think I could do it. Also I spent allll the money on a Charger… fuel being what it is, just getting to the start is a pretty big investment for me!

Hot rodding is fun unless it's lean , pinging & antifreeze smell running hot ??? Installing a Holley is hot rodding too w/less guessing is my opinion. Is entertaining though thx...
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 7 месяцев назад
Fun, I did install a Holley later. It made zero improvement with the issues I was having… then I changed the engine, and it’s awesome. I’d like to A/B test the Holley and Edelbrock on the new engine at some point.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Lol ... If all else fails replace the engine. I really enjoy your vids & FYI on reaction time I can't tell if your waiting for green or leaving on last yellow ? Someone told me leave on last yellow & improvement on reaction time big time
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 7 месяцев назад
@@ronaldrey8474 Yes, I have been told that as well. I was trying to do too much at once. Stage, find my leave RPM, and ohhhh the light's green, time to go guy. It's a learning curve. Haha. But my times were improving the last time out. I will get a feel for it with some more practice.

How many Mopars do you own?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 2 года назад
Less than I used to! Haha. As of now, I personally own four classic Mopars (Demon, ‘76 Dart, ‘66 Charger and ‘68 Charger,) as well as two Dodge vans and a ‘73 Crew cab. I have two Cummins trucks (a 2000 and an ‘03.) I also have a Grand Cherokee (I think it counts, it has a Magnum V8…) My wife has a ‘66 Coronet and a ‘96 Ram 1500 as well. I could be forgetting something. It’s pretty much Mopar Or No Car in my world. My wife daily drives a Subaru though. I have had many of them. I recently sold two Dodge trucks and a ‘73 Charger. One of the trucks and that Charger are still at my place… I will be working on them for video.
