Thank god Coady did those years .... now when Dale recently had to do back surgery Coady stepped up and took the drumming duty, ONLY ONE THAT COULD DO IT =)
Hag Me is my favorite Melvins song, so it's excellent to see this view of the drums. Especially love the last two minutes. Thanks for sharing this vantage point with us!
Melvins do it well. There are parts of certain songs that parts are divided between the drummers, and when it's all synched it's like drumline mirror vision. Go see, they tour all the time.
I got to see The Big Melvins Business when they both played Dublin touring (A) Senile Animal. Was an amazing gig to witness two very talented drummers do what they do best live. Just the power and the ability to keep to their own insane rhythm. Caught Coady's mallet at the end! Wait...that sounds....'wrong'.
It´s nothing like that man. The melvins have been around since 1983, they got the two drummers set since 2006, all their songs before that date were written with one drum set, and this two are old classic and brilliant songs by the way. The songs written after 2006 have two drum parts always.
ALSO, forgot this: because they have different kits, their drums and cymbals don't sound the exact same. Believe me, I was in the crowd for this, those two kits are monstrous.
Same reason albums layer guitar tracks. It makes the sound "bigger" because they aren't in 100% perfect time and it just doubles the output. Additionally, they often trade grooves and "battle" during songs. Watch during the fills, not just the verse and chorus beats.
Both of these songs were written and released in the early 90s, when they only had one drummer. The post-2006 stuff with the Big Business lineup has different parts for each drummer. I guess they don't really want to completely rewrite a rhythm section on these songs, especially since Dale's original parts are so integral.
These songs were written decades before they had two drummers. Listen to The Bride Screamed Murder with a good set of headphones, the stereo imaging is awesome, and they are rarely "doing the same thing" Real answer, not trying to be an ass.
this song was made before they had two drummers. they do a lot of great ideas. think about it like guitars. nobody questions two guitarists. same thing bro :)
Would be more interesting to see them playing some doublebass 'n blasts etc. on 240BPM and see if they can still sync it that well. THAT takes some -real- skill and focus :)
