I agree, even though Richmond never got near the public acclaim, nor the legendary success level; they both were regarded by their peers as possessing uncommon skill, same as Senna, Fangio, and other legendary 'best of class' drivers. (I feel the same about Mark Martin.)
Drivers that don't drive (Or, sadly, aren't with us) anymore. A track that isn't there anymore. Cars that used to be stock sheetmetal - despite being totally different chassis, engines and transmissions. We are told that we are wrong when we say the new drivers just aren't like the old ones, but we watch these videos and know we are correct.

The 25 car was may favorite when I was a kid, but I loved all of them back then. Elliott, the Allisons, Earnhardt, Schrader all of them. The cars were cooler, I remember in 1989 just waiting to see the new Ford T-bird and Chevy Lumina (later in the year). I miss it, I try to watch the new stuff, but it's just sooo not as good. So I come to youtube and watch good racing, and when I luck up and find one that I'd never seen I could turn back flips.
Absolutely! I'm so glad to see that others feel this way. To me 1986 is the most over looked year in NASCARs history because of the fact that ya had Dale and Tim in their prime as well as Elliott, Waltrip, Cale Yarborough, Bobby, Petty and all the rest of the guys driving cars that were wide open at all the tracks. No Plates. My number has been and always will be 25, it was the day I was born. So being 10 years old that year and Tim jumping out there with Harry Hyde and doing what they did on those tracks, well that was an easy fit for me. So Tim was the guy that I cheered for and was my hero. I may be wrong but I really think that had he not gotten sick that '87-'89 would have been wild years for NASCAR. And really I don't think that it would have stopped until Dale and Tim retired had they both lived. I think that Gordon wouldn't have been as much of a big deal. Richmond was the one who put Hendrick Motorsports on the map along with Harry. Gordon was just who Hendrick lucked up and found to take over after Tim couldn't do it and Waltrip left. So in the 90's when all these people that had not liked NASCAR before showed up with the number 24 on their hats and t-shirts I just shook my head.....lol And it just when on and on and so now in 2017 we are where we are with it. If NASCAR wants to fix what they've ruined, they could start by giving the teams full control of spoiler angles, shocks, get rid of restrictor plates, bring back bias ply tires, and a hundred other things I haven't listed. The only thing they should mandate is car weights and engine size. Leave the innovations up to the manufacturer and team. NASCAR has become a spec series.
This was real racing - stuff the Saturday night racers and fans could relate to. I like the safety improvements they have made but it's nice to see a car "look" like a production car. It's sad that Nascar is declining - and with so many popular drivers retiring it's gonna be tougher again. I'm not sure what could be done to help the sport at this point.
Get rid of the stupid playoff system, tracks layed out like Riverside. Drivers not whining constantly. More production looking cars. Loosen some rules a bit.
I’ve got an idea… make 1/3 of the season super speedways, 1/3 of the season road courses, and 1/3 of the season heritage races where all teams have to race these classic cars… safety features added of course.

Dam, not only did Thay drive the wheels off, but so did Bodine. You can't put 3/5 drivers together today that can put on a show like back then, that's what's killing NASCAR

Did you know that Dale has the record for the highest average finish on road courses in NASCAR history, but rarely in the best car, when you watch this video you can see how to make a slower car faster than the faster car, the lines he uses in the sweeping corners to how much better he straitens out the esses. A rare driver that can get more out of a car than it has, none today, that's the kind of thing that makes the best driver of all time, Tim a very good driver also both lost way to soon
I think Tim Richmond had one of the best looking cars in this era. I mean they all looked good but just something about the paint scheme sponsors just all came together nicely.
Yeah it was a shame I was there at that race used to go out there all the time we used to go out there on Sundays they put out of light and let people drag race on the back straight
If Geoff Bodine didn't hold Dale Earnhardt up after the restart he could've given Tim Richmond a damn good challenge for the win. The Hendrick cars were better on the front part of the track but Dale was eating them alive everywhere else especially in the esses!
does anyone else notice that the exhaust sound on one or 2 of the cars doesn't sound like a V8? could be someone down a cylinder or something but I swear a couple cars sound like v6's or something
They were all v8's. Exhaust configurations were not regulated back then, you could run whatever you wanted pretty much. 180 degree headers are one thing that comes to mind that can sometimes make a v8 sound like a v6. Lots of different things you can do to the exhaust.
Yeah those 180 degree headers had a very distinct sound and sounded much like the newer V6s that

It's a 180 degree crank, or called a flat plane crank, and yes some teams used the 3.8 Buick V6, and that is what I am hearing, at least two cars up in the top six or so.
No... its now a town. The track was the only thing out there and it brought ppl in. The town grew, and grew bigger than the track and took over. This video is the last Winston cup run there before it closed. Very sad.
Back when the driver mattered most. No areo crap or splitters. Stand on the gas and slide it around. Yet I still feel Nascar was best when they started with a real car to build off
This was the period in NASCAR the 80's when most of the cars on the track were from the GM line of makes. In this race the top 5 or 6 cars were Chevy's. But the production cars from that day Chevy Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, Buick Regal, and Olds Cutlass were all based on the same simple body design at GM but they did all sorts of different things with those cars across name plates as far as engine packages, body styling details, comfort packages, performance packages, and even more luxury packages so good back then you could tell a Chevy from a Buick and an Oldsmobile from a Pontiac just as easy on the track as you could driving down the road! The engineer's at Ford that redesigned the Thunderbird in the 80's for the production line styled it as much like the GM cars as possible just so NASCAR could make templates that gave Ford a chance at competing with GM on the racetrack in NASCAR!
