SHM over their childhoods. I always thought Dale Jr. raced more for his father's approval than anything. Horrible childhood...with 3 adults to blame....one of the most disturbing things mentioned in this interview was the fact that they had to have families of their own before they could understand how most families operate.

@@LEG1TBuRNS watching jrs first cup wins and seeing sr showing pride in him. I bet that was the best feeling for jr. Sadly many men especially men's men like Dale was, that was how they were with their kids back then. It's how they were raised. Then many of those kids grew up and took it to the extreme opposite and here we are now. A bunch of whiny snowflakes with safe spaces being raised.

Fame comes with a price that has to be paid by the children of the famous. But does it compare to kids growing up in a home where the family is poor, the dads a violent drunk and the moms in jail for writing hot checks no! Dysfunction is going to the norm in a family of fame or wealth, its almost impossible to maintain wealth and fame being around the house all of the time. I can't say Dale Sr did a bad job at parenting his kids. Dale Jr and Kelley turned into amazing, down to earth, good, successful, wonderful people so I can't blame Sr for being a disciplinarian they turned out right. But when the kids were doing good even though Teresa was the stepmom, she should've done a better job at accepting Jr and Kelley as her children and at providing a loving home so that Jr and Kelley didn't feel like strangers growing up in the family home and within the family unit.

I think the mindset has definitely shifted through generations. The hurtful parts removed in favor of more positive reinforcements. Looking back throughout history, considering facts like the Great Depression, Spanish Flu, The Civil War, I can’t imagine how serious life was back then. Not so long ago I asked a 95 year old friend what he thinks has changed most throughout his life. He quickly replied, “That is simple. Nobody has to work anymore. I remember clear back to when I was three years old. I had to put the work in or I didn’t eat. May have been small tasks. Pulling weeds out of the garden, or picking the garden, feeding the chickens things to that nature but it was work and we did it all day long or we didn’t eat.” That frame of mind is so much more serious than what we live these days. My father was raised by uncles after a stormy broken home between his parents. I got a chance to meet those uncles when I was 12. They were as stern and serious as any prison warden portrayed on television. One in particular seemed to be exactly like the warden on Shawshank. So yes, my upbringing was much the same with my father. No if’s ands or buts, everything brought forth consequences. The few successes were minimized. About the only thing I could do well was run very fast and that didn’t last forever. When I started getting out run in junior high that was about it. I now call it being raised by anxieties.

What they are saying is that it wasn’t intentional or “mean”, Dale Earnhardt simply did not even think about going to see his son that had been at military school for a month. I get it....my Dad was a ww2 ARMY Sargent...a tuff..rude nasty kinda guy..the first backhand I got I was to little to see over the kitchen table, three years old maybe...just for asking a question, a kid is meant to be seen not heard kinda deal...so I definitely understand. I'm glad you both made it trough all of it... My take on life...We didn't ask to be here...We don't choose our parent's...We don't choose where were born...We don't choose when were born...We don't choose how we look and we don't choose our when we leave, Knowing this is true for everyone soul on earth enjoy each moment you have because we don't know how many moment's we receive. Always share the positive with all and refuse to let anyone or anything take it away...

Any man who backhands a 3 yr old across a table for asking a questions is not only a first class dick, but a coward to boot.

da324. Thanks for your comment and I agree...its was a tuff way to grow up he shouldn't have ever had chidlren...he didn't have a nice word for anyone...everyone was a dumb SOB to him..he was a drinker and a fighter...the only thing he ever liked was racing, I was born the morning after race, and taken to race's every weekend growing up, so young, I would fall asleep before the feature..to this day the sound of a race car is music to me...i've had a natural talent as a driver from a young age and he knew it, but held me back from using it..racing was and still is when I feel alive..thanks angain for your comment, i appreciate it

I loved this podcast Kelley is such a strong/awesome woman it's rare to see a sibling have that much love for their other sibling. Jr has always been awesome and my hero but Kelley and Amy have made him the guy I hope to ever be.

You can tell she is very strong, motivated girl by the way she sits on the edge of her chair. No slouching there

Screw the Kardashians, the Osbournes the REAL reality series should be the Earnhardts! Theyre literally a good old down to earth American family! Love these guys!

I know nobody wants to say it but Dale Sr. was lacking in the "father" department. Let's face it, he didn't seem to have any interest in being close to his kids. Everybody wants to blame Teresa, and while she definitely seems like a problem, Sr. was a grown man who made his own decisions and had his own responsibilities. Just because he was a legend on the track doesn't give him a pass. I also understand that Sr. was being parenting based upon the father he had, but I only hope Jr. breaks the cycle.

If anything, because of all that Kerry, Kelley, and Jr have become outstanding parents in their own right.

@@bluegrassboy2448 the irony isn't lost though that Taylor isn't included much of a current nature when Kelly Kerry and Jr are mentioned. But the unsung hero that finessed Kerry being back into Dale Sr and Kelly and Jr's life is Mrs Martha Earnhardt. I think she might very well have done that not so much for Dale Sr, but for Kelly and Jr. And I watched these interviews with Kerry and you can tell just by their rapport how close they are. I just think that's so awesome. RIP Martha, Ralph, Dale, Randy, and Danny. And not to forget the Moms either RIP Brenda Gee and Latine Keys.
