It's so great to hear the very descriptive nature that he noticed by driving the new generation car! He has gone over how things have changed from 80's-90's2000's it will be a learning experience for all the drivers

I'm of the firm opinion that Dale Jr is probably the best analyst and commentator on NASCAR racing that we could ever hope to have in the modern era. Ned Jarret was the best for his era, but Dale Jr. is more informative than anyone else in presenting the mechanics of how a driver does his job and gives us the details on how that process happens.

Here's a thought. Often times I see people wanting less on throttle/ full throttle time around tracks. People like me would likely rather see these drivers struggle to put the power down, pedaling their cars and fighting for traction. Of course, there's a sweet spot with this where both the speed and battles are good but anyway, In my mind that equates to more exciting racing. At least to an extent. Do we really need wider tires and more grip?

Good analysis Dale...this was interesting. I had a 1971 Corvette that handled like it was on rails (as most Vettes do) and I found out one day where the limit was as I spun out. It was sticking and turning just fine...until it wasn't. I am just an average guy but I used to be able to tell in a car, or when I raced go karts, when I was getting close to the edge in a turn and then I would back off. Not with that Vette. Zero warning, at least to my senses. Luckily all I did was spin and didn't hit anything. Never pushed it much after that.

Jr. gives such an honest and experienced evaluation. NASCAR should listen to this man.

You know, taking the cars to the drag strip at Charlotte to determine the starting order would be different.

Enjoyed the detailed info that Dale Jr. gave about the new car. Bowyer is great. Sucks that he is no longer active as a driver but at least he is still around in the sport.

Thanks for sharing your perspective of what drivers will say about the car. As Mike said, drivers will have to learn were the new edge is. As a fan this gives me a sense of the challenges it takes to drive the car to that edge.

Man, that's awesome. Bowman gray is on another level. All I want is to go watch them test the next gen. at my home dirt track and they won't let me. 👊🤣 Btw, the steering lock and the temperatures are issues that HAVE to be addressed.

The look the guys have watching Dale explain, (MANSPLAIN) this new car and how he breaks everything down is what makes this Show special. You can’t fake interest, these guys are glued to his breakdown like every true race fan.

I'm curious how the crew chiefs will adapt to the new cars. It's a completely different suspension... I'm sure they're doing their homework.

When Dale just start to mention why the steering was not full like in the current cup car, I was just thinking about the wider tire, larger wheel, and the suspension had to play a factor in why the car was not allowing that full steering. But, Dale explained it perfectly. The last part of the video is a typical driver. Love it!!

NASCAR has run on 1/4 mile track, actually shorter...Islip Speedway was a .2-mile (320-meter) oval race track in Islip, New York which was open from 1947 until 1984. It is the smallest track to host NASCAR's Grand National Series, from 1964 to 1971.

I’m wondering what is going to happen when the front of the new car hits the diffuser of another car. Is the diffuser metal? If so, that won’t be good for the car hitting it. If it is not metal, then I worry about the diffuser and the ability of that car to finish a race, especially at faster tracks.

Honestly, it sounds like the Next Gen car is going to be great. Will it take getting used to? Of course, how could it not. Much of the racing world writ large has been running on 18" wheels & tires for ages now, and you learn how they talk. If you were to bolt 15" wheels & tires onto IMSA GT sports cars, the drivers would be commenting on how uncontrollable the cars are. Although I'm a huge motorsports fan, I haven't followed NASCAR closely since I was a kid in the early '90s. I'm very excited in the Next Gen car, and it makes me interested in the series again. Just wish NASCAR would ditch all the stages and playoff crap and simply run a damn race from green to checker the old school way.

The steel belted tires increase spring ratings at each wheel, Unlike bias ply tire that flex and change diameter depending on tire pressure radials will change very little. Talk to a local track Super/Street stock driver and they can tell you a bunch of new info.

Good for nascar on bringing these veterans in and getting their opinions. wisdom gained from life experience is the only wisdom.

I fully understand the concerns about the maximum steering angle of the new car vs the current unit and the low profile tires and how they affect the ability of the driver to sense the start of the "yaw" or rotation of the car. When the California Highway Patrol bought the 1991 Camaro RS for pursuit duties, the EVOC staff at the CHP academy recommended to the CHP commissioner that officers assigned to patrol in the RS travel to the academy for a 3 day course with emphasis on high speed turning and road course duties. I was one of the division RS training instructors in Southern California. I was responsible for introducing a small number of CHP officers to the handling differences of the RS compared to the regular production Ford Crown Victoria and Chevrolet Caprice police packages.

gen4 car (car they last used in 2007) was the best NASCAR race car. Things were better during that era (Late 80s-2007).

I love the fact it’s gonna be a IRS suspension. I drift and having IRS is so much better then solid axle. I can imagine drivers will find a liking once used too it.

Jr, the C-5R had independent rear suspension, right? You drove those with your dad. So, yes you have felt independent rear suspension (along wider grippier tires and bigger brakes) under a race car before, correct? Just not a stock car….;)

I honestly like the new car. It kinda reminds me of the v8 super cars down under. I love that they look a lot more like the road cars then previous years.

NASCAR is supposed to be a STOCK CAR racing body. The last time any cars at a NASCAR event were actually stock cars was in the early 1970s. What you see today are tube frames with fiberglass bodies and engines that you cannot get at a dealership. The "races" are little more than a parade until the final few laps. I prefer going to my local short track where there is lots of action and where admission is $10, not $300.

Listening to DJ it sounds like they need to source the steering racks from the companies that make them for Formula Drift. The steering angle they get is crazy, it gets near 90°

I'll be just as honest with everyone here as Jr was. I don't care what this car does well or does poorly on a .250mi. short track with zero banking. Okay, now we know how it will take the last turn at Sonoma, maybe Martinsville, and how it will handle for a non-points event great. What I have a problem with is the stuff that will rear it's head at the bigger tracks aerodynamically. That rear diffuser has me more than concerned. Why? Because it's there to reduce aero push. The problem with that is, the dirty air from under the car is being compacted down with that diffuser so it stays lower and doesn't travel over the whole nose, now that doesn't sound like a problem, but when you have a front splitter, sitting down low on the nose, guess where the dirty air is gonna hit directly, with more turbulence than ever? That's right. That front splitter. And we already know how sensitive those splitters are... Jr. is making great mechanical points with the steering, tire sidewall (which I've shown concern over in past comments) and other things, but the big issue to me is the aero in a full pack of cars because that's the majority of racing we'll see...

Why can't they keep the original width on the front tires only?

Finally a good looking nascar again. The steering could be managed by changing the gear box gearing.

There's 150-200mph wind all around the car.....it's amazing that they aren't using that airflow to circulate cooler air into the car.

RE Next Gen - I wonder how much influence Australia's V8 Supercar series had on this. Additionally, the Aussies run closed cockpits with coolsuits. Those cars are brutal when it comes to interior temps so mandating coolsuits should absolutely be a thing a for NASCAR.

My biggest concern is that more grip, better braking and better traction will eliminate the Chances to overtake on the short tracks and road courses.

This new Nascar is almost identical to an Australian V8 supercar. A few things are different like Nascar still doesn't look like the proper car at the rear from the B pillar back and the V8's have a wing instead of a spoiler. The tyres are probably wider then the Dunlops we have on the V8 supercars as well. Also V8supercars has a 6 speed instead of only 5 in the new Nascar.

Real question....Why would they design the Next Gen with less steer? Not account for steering needs in tighter spaces? I'm gonna guess something to do with money but I really wanna know.

Interesting hearing about the heat in the cars . Has any thought been given to shield the interior from heat with material like that used on the old space shuttles from re-entry heat. Also is there a way to make a flow through interior. Ducting outside air with exit vents through the rear window ?

Pretty bad ass American to have a track and a football field in the infield! Also the wheel looks like a center hub for removal. I didnt see lug nuts. Thats gonna be expensive

That break away moment Dale is talking about will require many laps and several spins by the drivers to learn the warning signs. The signs are few. They are not addressed in a simulator. Its a "seat-of-the-pants" awareness that some drivers will never really find or feel.

What do the modifieds run at Bowman Gray? I think that would be a great yardstick to measure the next gen car against.

The stiffer the sidewall on the tire becomes the more difficult it is to judge grip limits..

I dont have a ton of faith in the new car, but i dont hate it. Its actually drawing my attention back to NASCAR for the first time in a long time. I've honestly just been bored by it. But the new car, good or bad, has my interest again lol.
