As salvage operations continue at the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse site, the owners of the massive cargo ship that struck the bridge have invoked a centuries-old maritime law requiring cargo owners to contribute to the costs of salvaging the ship and its cargo.

How unusual no one wants to take responsibility for their actions

If it was your ship that got into a major accident that killed people you would probably do the same thing if you could. You can’t really blame the company for doing this. It’s still a on going investigation. And it’s not like it was the company operating the ship. It was leased.

The ''general average'' concept of losses on ships goes back as far as the Romans. So it's hardly a new idea.

They need to pay for the whole thing that's why you have insurance that ship has a history of breakdowns and lack of maintenance no we should not pay for this

@@OrioleBeagle the law would make sense if it wasn’t discovered that they had acted so incredibly reckless. I truly do hope that it does not get unilaterally applied here and they use this as an example because this is not a simple Oopsie.

This rule does not apply here. Dali was no correct maintained and cause this accident. No way they can use this rule - there was no storm or anything else.

They'll invoke anything to keep from paying. I wonder what they invoked to keep the ship in disrepair and an accident waiting to happen?

It figures doesn’t(?): it will take years before Baltimore will ever be the same as well as commuters and affected business owners who will have to adapt to the extreme inconvenience without the bridge. One would think the Singapore cargo vessel insurance would be prepared for the financial scale of this disaster.

The Dali is part of the salvage operation.... that includes the cargo. I believe it can be kept as security until damage costs are paid. The damage, though, may well exceed the value of the ship and the cargo....

How about maritime laws that require back-up for emergency loss of power and control of the ship? So, by this reasoning, if I have something delivered by FedEx and the truck is in an accident, I am expected to bear some of the cost of repairing the damage?

We want to limit our payout but there is no problem charging astronomical fees for moving cargo. You broke it you bought it. There should also be criminal charges for the lives you lost.

Oh wow, pass the costs on to people that are victims and had nothing to do with what happened. I mean, wouldn't that be like a truck driver causing a fatal wreck on a highway, and the people that hired him to haul a trailer of cargo, having the share in the damages? That doesn't seem right at all.

Never should a bridge been built in the first place. NOW, it should not be rebuilt. They need to build a tunnel. If they had done this in the beginning we would not have this battle or mess let alone deaths. I would hope the people of Baltimore insist on a tunnel for replacement for safety reasons. They had the technology in the 70's to bore out the tunnel under the river. They have built tunnels under the oceans many times, Atlantic, so ships could enter or exit SAFELY, UK to EU for cars, trucks and trains. it was a moronic decision to build that bridge.
@norman7179
@norman7179 2 месяца назад
The problem with a tunnel is hazardous materials are not allowed. Could you imagine what would happen if a gasoline tanker truck had a serious accident/spill in a tunnel during rush hour ? There would still need to be a bridge.
