I even had Peter Wendt's page (www.mcamafia.de...) queued up to show the origins of this modification, but didn't show it on video - Sorry if my work was out-of-field for portions, the recorded area is deeper in than I thought. That is all I do to modify the DS1287 (and now DS1387).

Great video. I have 4 DS1287's. So, I took one, sanded it all down and just used it as an experiment. I wanted to pull the BR1225 battery out and see how it was mounted and get an idea of the construction. The battery voltage is 155mV. After I was done, that chip went in to the trash. I grabbed the 2nd one to do the "real" mod. I exposed the contacts and measured the voltage. 3.0 volts!!?! Date code 20th week of 1990! WTF?!?! It probably just means it will die a week after installation in to the '286 motherboard. I'm modding it. But, I thought it was interesting. Thanks for the video!

Peter Wendt - an IBM engineer in Germany - is the first example I am aware of that documented the DS1287 modification online. Yes, he did remove much of the casing material. Here is his page: www.mcamafia.de/mcapage0/dsrework.htm Thank You for the feedback and for adding to the knowledge of these devices!

This is normal. Sometimes batterry has correct voltage but current is too small. i met some theoretically good baterries, but they doesn't work when I used them.

Thanks Man!!!!! I didn't disconnect the internal battery, maybe that's the reason why it still doesn't work, I'll try again removing more plastic.....cheers!!!

The many DS1287 modules that I have done are easier to cut on the negative side of the internal battery - as shown, I just drill in and double-check with a voltmeter.

IT occurs to me that you can probably dremel from the TOP of the chip and reach these terminals.... disconnect the internal battery and solder on new leads WITHOUT desoldering the chip from the motherboard...... what say you?

There are instances of the Dallas module being soldered to the motherboard - As long as the proper side of the module is still exposed, I would cut tracks into the same positions; The battery is on top, and would be hard to identify where to drill from the top. Peter Wendt, the first example that I am aware of for this process, has a picture of cutting most of the plastic on top away: www.mcamafia.de/mcapage0/dsrework.htm

I have to try this eventually. I have a few spare dead Dallas Batteries.

It's easy once you get into the routine - get the appropriate Dremel bits, of course.

Hello Sir, very nice work here. I have a few older computers that have this problem and this is a very easy and inexpensive fix. What confuses me with other videos I have seen on the subject is some people are connecting new crystals. Why would this be necessary? Unless of course the original crystal was faulty of course.
@IBM_Museum
@IBM_Museum Год назад
Just the battery replacement - and severing at least one of the old battery terminals inside the casing (the negative lead is easier to reach). One other recent video doesn't show the correct steps like I do.
@TheTemporalAnomaly
@TheTemporalAnomaly Год назад
@@IBM_Museum Yes. I kind of guessed it was a mistake as the crystals are very reliable aside from a slight drift in frequency over time that most would not notice. I do like to keep the old gear working as long as possible, also some of my old machines in their application would be hard to replace due to unavailability of software.

I have developed / contracted this ailment too. Why not just "jump" the terminals form somewahere else on the board ? I don't have the circuit diagram for my Board - indeed the downloaded Manual is very basic, but do we really need to go into the Chip at all ? Thanks for your contribution to this collection of vids.

The internal battery pins aren't passed through to the socket - and you should also sever the internal battery leads before connecting an external battery.

@@IBM_Museum you're right - I'd forgotten about powering the internals when there are no thru' connection pins...

Dose this work on the Odin clock chip?
@IBM_Museum
@IBM_Museum Год назад
Yes - same principles. I'm told that the Odin version inverts the battery, but I haven't investigated that further. YMMV.

The Dallas modules can go bad too - The computer may halt before displaying video with a bad module - where you can use a POST code reader to check if the system will start in the first place.
