This video is part of the Advanced Higher History course on Northern Britain, from the Iron Age to 1034. Part of the unit on the history of Dalriada, it deals with the importance of Christianity to the development of the kingdom through the 6th and 7th centuries. This covers the role of St Columba and his biographer, Adomnan, conflict between the Celtic and Roman Church, the power of the written word and the use of Christian imagery in Dalriada.

It's not clear how what Caesar -- a cultural outsider -- wrote about the Gauls in the 50s BC is a good source for the north of Britain 600 or so years later.

Thanks for an interesting vid. I'm finding the influence of Iona in a lot of stories I have written/writing about yorkshire and the kingdom of Northumbria. King Aldfrith is one I have recently become fascinated with. Keep up the good work 😁

Thankyou very much! :) Aldfrith had a very interesting background. He'd make for a fascinating protagonist!

My surname is McPherson. As was my father and his father before. McPherson comes from the Gaelic meaning 'son of the parson ', they say it comes from the time of the Celtic Church when the priesthood could be married. Much like what you see in Orthodox Christian churches today, not ironically. It's also said the name came from an even more ancient clan whose founder was said to be a follower of a certain local Celtic saint. Good work.

How do you get 600 cows? A few bulls can impregnate 200 cows. Wouldn't that mean a herd of 200+ cows?

Dear Sir, I appreciate your scholarly work up to a point. However, I disagree with your interpretation of the saintly Columba and Adomnan. You teach that their actions, from Columba's self-exile to the illuminating of the manuscripts to Adomnan's biography of Columba were all prompted by a desire for power, influence and wealth. You don't understand the workings of the saintly mind. You should at the very least make room for the strong possibility that Columba left Ireland because of a deep sense of remorse for the numerous deaths he had caused, a conviction wrought by God Himself; that the saints laboured in ill-lit cells as they illuminated the manuscripts for the glory of God; that Adomnan resisted fabrication and simply wanted to preserve the memory of a great man for posterity and the glory of God. Interpreting the motives of people of another era and convictions that differ greatly from our own is dangerous.

There are no written accounts of Dál Riata, the earliest written records coming from the chroniclers of Iona and Irish monasteries because we had oral tradition and learned culdees, Christianity was well established by the dalriada prior to catholicism. It was not until the 9th rede (meaning first born) named Aeron surrendered the kingdom to kennetth mcalpin that Catholicism could even take a foot hold and the only thing the dalriada asked to keep from kenneth was religion then they were allowed to move to Redesdale Northumbria and have kept it to this very day I, as senior branch of the Dalriada by oral traditions dating back over 2000 yrs as Hebrews since Moses. We served under Queen Elizabeth I and almost restored protestant Christianity back to Scotland under the Rede and Lake family advice. Free Ireland and Scotland from the Catholic cult today! Repent and seek the Spirit with all your heart, mind, and soul or face the hour of tribulation and the false messiah is the whole of the truth of Christianity and nothing else. Reade/Rede/ Riada/Riata/Reod family motto: Seek the Cloth D' Aubigny family motto: Religion over Kingdoms (who turned down the kingship of England) Lake family motto: One God, One King (Yesu/Jesus), One Heart (Cor or Spirit connect) Do not trust the written word, trust in God.
