I did a video about this once before but had to take it down I've had enough emails about Damascus steel and Damasteel that I thought I would go ahead and do a video about this stuff...

Hey man, been an avid sharpener years and watching the prosses of them making Damasteel BLEW MY MIND!! You gave a very good overview of the differences. Just got one more Sub.

Damasteel is rwl34(cpm 154) and pmc27(powdered version of Sandvick 12c27). I like the stuff, I sharpened a few of my Damasteel knives and it feels like a regular steel(unlike how you described regular Damascus feels). It takes a very keen edge and looks awesome.

Thank you very much for explain the diference i didnt know how damasteel is made but i disagree about the edge problems with traditional damascus i have forged many traditional damascus knifes with simple steels 1075 and 15n20 and i dont see any problem in sharpening but i don't know maybe you are right..

Do you have extensive experience with Devin Thomas Damascus (commonly found on CRK)? If so, please make a dedicated video addressing all your thoughts! Lastly, your channel is a gold mine!!

I know one of the steels he uses in his Damascus is Aeb-l(similar to pmc27 in Damasteel except it's a non powdered steel but still very fine grained). The other steel in his stainless is 304 which is a low carbon steel. I'd say edge retention would go to Damasteel, both will take a very keen edge but Devins might have that hard/soft/hard feelings on the edge(don't know, never tried his stuff).

I wish I had a place like Ferrum Forge in my area. I don't think Jeremy Marsh would be too keen on a random little person dropping in on him whiles he's working lol.

Anything noteable to say about reates heat treat of damasteel? And if you could choose another steel with similar wear resistance; maybe cpm154 or s35vn?
@D00MTR33
@D00MTR33 6 лет назад
Andrew Thompson well rwl34 is just a version of cpm 154 so it would be very similar, heat treat apart.

One of the true masters of damascus is Sukenari, they actually do damascus warakomi which is practically a lost art.

Mike, very helpful video. Question, please: I'm into the straight razor hobby. What do you think about Damasteel on a straight razor? I'm intrigued. Honing straights I use synthetic stones 1k, 3k, 4 and 5k, 8k, 12k and then jnat and strop. Would this be the same progression for a Damasteel straight? Will a Damasteel straight keep an edge longer,?
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 2 года назад
Dana steel it’s not like Damascus pattern welded steel. It’s just like any other stainless. It’s pretty much the same as RWL34 so it should be fine
@homefryniles3983
@homefryniles3983 2 года назад
@@CrazySharp Thank you! I really appreciate your reply. And this tells me, I think it's safe to assume, that paying $1,200 for this sort of straight razor is not going to get me any better edge, or a longer lasting edge, then a typically good $300 Thiers-Issard straight razor 😆

I know this is an older video but I’m struggling to find the answer to this, how does damasteel (patterned) compare to the standard S30V in terms of edge retention /toughness/ corrosion resistance?
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 4 года назад
It’s basically the same as RWL 34 ... And in my opinion pretty much everything has better edge retention than S 30 V… I’ve done several videos talking about chipping of S 30 V and followed numerous other RU-vidrs that are having the same issue with S 30 V

I kinda don't like how they are called Damascus blades at all, Real Damascus is made from Wootz steel which contained Tungsten, vanadium, and carbon which caused the patterns and other features of the metals.

What is the Rockwell hardness of Damasteel?
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 3 года назад
Depends on the heat treat
@precisionknifesharpening3102
@precisionknifesharpening3102 3 года назад
@@CrazySharp If you don’t know just say so. If they make such a high quality product then the specifications should be available. This isn’t the first knife steel that I’ve encountered as being special but fail to advertise its quality.
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 3 года назад
@Precision Knife Sharpening Wow for a guy that claims to be a professional knife sharpener or precision knife sharpening you don’t know a lot about steels do you… Steel will vary in hardness depending on the heat treat just for example production 20 CV usually comes in at about 62 to 63 Rockwell however when I do a custom heat treat I take it to about 64 so I don’t see why you’re being accusatory because unless I did the heat treat or unless I have the paperwork with the knife of course I won’t know … Considering I didn’t make this knife and it is not my knife I wouldn’t know what the HRC is… However I could ask the maker for you but considering the way you approached it I don’t think I will
@precisionknifesharpening3102
@precisionknifesharpening3102 3 года назад
@@CrazySharp All I was asking was what is the Rockwell hardness of Damasteel. What I assume from your answer is Damasteel doesn’t heat treat their steel before selling it. I apologize for the way I approached this question. And I apologize to you for being rude.
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 3 года назад
@@precisionknifesharpening3102 No they don’t sell it heat treated they sell it annealed and it is the manufacturer or makers responsible for doing the heat treatment… The same as it is with every other steel that any knife maker uses

To be fair neither of them are true Wootz-Damascus.
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 6 лет назад
GallopingWalrus to be fair true wootz Damascus hasn’t been made in hundreds if not thousands of years
@GallopingWalrus
@GallopingWalrus 6 лет назад
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp Hundreds. Approximately 200. But there is one maker who I personally believe to be making true wootz, and that's Mike Loade. He even has a documentary on RU-vid I believe.
@CrazySharp
@CrazySharp 6 лет назад
I’ve seen it but it’s just an approximation of the process... no one really knows what process they used or not
@GallopingWalrus
@GallopingWalrus 6 лет назад
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp No one knows. But when viewed under electron microscope, his blades appear identical to other authentic wootz steels, and it's very much something that could have been done practically without modern machines. Though with thousands of years of trial and error.

Damascus steel comes from Damascus no where else there is a video on RU-vid how it’s made it’s not welded

I understand that however in the knife world, a "traditional" Damascus is "pattern" welded or a folded steel blade. I was simply pointing out the vast differences between that welded steel and the monolithic Damascus that they are making at Damasteel; but your comment prompted me to change the title. Also just so you know, there have been several smiths that have recreated the actual process for the true Damascus most notably the late Al Pendray -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OP8PCkcBZU4.html
