Nellie Melba, sopano (1861 - 1931)
John Brownlee, baritone ( 1900 - 1969)
Verdi - La traviata / rec. 1926
cleaned by Maldoror
Lyrics:
-----
VIOLETTA
Tell your daughter, so lovely and pure,
that a poor and wretched woman,
who has but one precious thing in life -
will sacrifice it for her - and then will die!
GERMONT
Weep, poor girl.
I see now that the sacrifice
I asked could not be greater,
within my heart I feel what you must suffer,
be brave, your noble heart will conquer all.
Weep, poor girl.
--------
VIOLETTA
Dite alla giovine sì bella e pura
ch'avvi una vittima della sventura,
cui resta un unico raggio di bene
che a lei il sacrifica e che morrà!
GERMONT
Piangi, o misera!
Ah supremo, il veggo,
è il sacrificio ch'ora ti chieggo.
Sento nell'anima già le tue pene;
coraggio e il nobile cor vincerà!
Piangi, o misera!

At the very end of her singing days, the few electrical recordings Melba made in a studio in London in December 1926 (of which this is one) show us just us how beautiful her voice really was (despite her age of 65). Unfortunately her voice hadn't been particularly well captured by the acoustic process, particularly those of the Victor Record Company.

Saint Bede Melba’s voice was well captured acoustically only in the 1904 sessions. Alas, there are just 4 electrically recorded published sides (HMV studios) made in December 1926, and the 9 “live” sides made at her Covent Garden farewell six months earlier, June 1926. Only 2 of those were published in her lifetime-part of the Otello Willow Song, and Mimi’s Addio from Act 3 of La bohème. Both are excellent. The complete farewell performance is now available. Some is excellent, and most of it is very good with only one or two parts needing some forgiveness. She was still in total command of her voice at 65.

Jeffrey Miller I thought the whole performance wasn’t recorded because she was supposedly under contract with a different company

RicharddtheStar you are correct. The Romeo balcony scene with Charles Hackett was not recorded. I meant to say the “complete” farewell AS RECORDED is now available on CD. Sorry I wasn’t clear. The master stampers for all the recorded sides survive. The contractual conflict was not Melba’s fault. It was Hackett’s, since he was under contract to Columbia. HMV could therefore record only the Otello and Boheme selections, since Melba and the other artists in those operas were all HMV artists.

Complicated story: the bride is 31 years older than the groom's father. That smells a lot like child abuse. No wonder that papa is not happy about his son's plans.

Nice singing for both, but especially the lady of 65 years of age...Amazing!!

The 22 year old Violetta is singing this duet with Alfredo’s father, who should be at least 20 years or so older. Well Melba (b. 1861) was 65 here, and she was singing opposite John Brownlee (b. 1900) who was 26 and her junior by almost 40 years. What on earth is Maldoror? Some computer program? Well, it BLEACHES voices and makes accompaniments sound like they’re under running water. Internationally acclaimed transfer engineer Ward Marston made the original (superior) transfer of this 78 rpm disc with Melba and Brownlee on the Naxos CD mentioned in your credits. Maldoror has not cleaned it. It’s contorted it. Marston’s work does not need “cleaning”. Ever.
