Watch Damien Hirst's interview with Charlie Rose (January 12, 2012) on his process, spot paintings, exhibitions and more. #Gagosian #ContemporaryArt #DamienHirst #CharlieRose
Love that he said Francis is Bacon was a great friend of his but he'd never spoke to him. Shows you how much of a relationship you can have with someone without saying a word.
Hirst is quite a character. I'm not a fan of his spin or spot painting but his installations are interesting. His piece "end game" at the MFAH is pretty cool.
He's on this show because, for a living artist, he makes a massive amount of money. The real impact of the spot paintings, like the butterflies, is the renewed use of both motifs in the decorative arts and pop culture - mugs, dishcloths, bed linen, tabletops, curtains... If only he spoke well too. He does make the occasional good work, but his defining characteristic is that he's the most successful artist businessman of his (British) generation.
i've noticed something. for fear of generalizing, i have noticed that successful artists tend to smile and laugh freely, while art critics tend to be ponderous, anal and make painful expressions while trying to justify their dislike of things.
Charlie Rose seems to have a deep, unrehearsed knowledge of contemporary art, artists, and dealers. Impressive for a current events / news / interview guy.
My favourite line 15:18 (Charlie Rose had just asked Damien Hirst what he was doing with all the money he was making: Damien: "I bought, you know, Bacon who was a great friend of mine, Frances Bacon." Charlie: "You knew him well?" Damien: "I didn't know him. I was around him a little bit. I never really spoke to him."
LUNDI 25 SEPTEMBRE 2017 - MONSIEUR MARCEL DUCHAMP - DADA - POP - RICHARD HAMILTON - ANDY WARHOL - ROY LICHTENSTEIN - ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG - RICHARD PRINCE - CLAES OLDENBURG - DONALD JUDD - JOSEPH KOSUTH - DANIEL BUREN - GUNTHER VON HAGENS - JEFF KOONS - DAMIEN HIRST
‘I mean… you know… I mean… you know….’ What does he mean? And no I don’t know. I did like the first few spot paintings though - and a few other pieces he’s done.
,i only saw his arrogance and disrespectful attitude towards Charlie Rose who is older than him and has more experienced in life. When Charlie asks HIrst, "without charles saatchi, damien hirst would be?" Hirst answers, "Charlie Rose" which later he explains " smaller fame and job". Chaelie Rose handle this well and shows clearly who is the smartest. With this characteristic of Hirst, his piece's fame won't last long and he will eventually be unknown to the world.
Hirst must have started with money and a lot of tenacity. Following the ethos of Duchamp, Warhol, Kostabi and others, it's all about the idea rather than how the idea manifests into something three dimensional and visually interesting. Many artists can think of a new or unusual idea for art but it takes money to execute it. But Hirst has opted for some pretty base idea's like animals preserved in glass tanks - more at home in a museum, rather than an art gallery - although that's where the idea is exposed as shock - seeing large sharks in an art gallery is something new and collectors lap it up! His dot (or spot) paintings are so derivative - from 60's pop art to Australian aboriginal dot paintings (a centuries old tradition) . It's the art critics and gallery sponsors fault. Hirst comes up with something rarely done in the art world - his dead animal series - that is all awe, shock and never seen before; then no matter how derivative his other works are eg. butterflies, colored dots, etc - they continue to spruik him as a genius. (When I painted murals in New York during the 90's, I had a friend who made very gruesome art from roadkill!)
Hirst started in decidedly lower class Brixton and was quite poor - his biological father is still unknown to him. His stepfather (a mechanic) suddenly left one day when Damien was 12. His mother was a typist and drank and beat him. It would be good to offer informed facts, rather than uninformed opinions.
@@lenala9773 I know Damien personally, so perhaps you (or others) shouldn't offer uninformed opinions based on your own ignorance and/or jealousy. It's one thing if you don't like an Artist's work, that's up to you, I've no problem with that. But making up facts about other people to fit your own own imagined narrative, or worse - just plain outright lying about other people is just being an assclown. Don't be an assclown.
Remember Mark Kostabi? HIrst will probably last longer, but will be a footnote. And there are artists like Mr. Brainwash. People with vested interests are involved to make money. He is but the instrument.
He's the anti-art artist just like Warhol. Skull and crossbones on his sleaves- is that a statemnt meaning I'm edgy or did he just pickup it from that sneaker guy . I'm a freethiking rebel open for anything. (So long as it turns a buck.)
8 secs in you can see in damien worst's face he's thinking: how the f did i get these critics to write all this shite about me, i never thought i'd fool them so easily. then he looks away to stop himself peeing his pants. damo worst is the great grey shark of english art, preying on all the drowning critics & fakes. he should pickle himself in formaledhyde. maybe then he'd finally be doing the world a favour: the ultimate post-modern statement, the supreme self-sacrifice, the final installation.
People buy shit all the time. They wear fur made of unimaginable suffering whilst walking their (deformed and sick from inbreeding) dogs that they have the gall to pretend to love!!. We live in a sick world where we reward shitty people peddling mediocrity. As long as there are people like you and I that can see through it, then maybe we can try to get through to the others. Love.
Zero talent and super kitsch for Hirst. Then it's zero for Rose also. And of course Jonathan Jones is the most ignorant guy about art. Shame on the Gardian for having him as its art critic.
please i need the dollar...r u in need of life model mr??**m i will finish the l8est a five ft by 1 ft canvas..and please i tryed to sketch rugby market last week and got moved on by both 2 special constables and two town security..the busker were safe ,,go figure!!!
My mother has been doing oil painting's for thirty year's. It makes me cry that this man has gotten this much recognition for such garbage !!!! Anybody can pickle a shark.
Damien Hirst = money for old rope, but the cash would come in handy I guess, I just can't fathom how stupid people are, just do a little research a lot of his so called art is a direct rip off of other real artists.
