One of my all time favorite singers to walk this earth. Damien is so underrated and so talented. He has the amazing ability to bring so much emotion to the table in every song he sings.
I never heard any of Damien's songs before. I ran into this song in 2018, after that I checked some of his own songs. And once you start listening to him, there's no coming back.
Most of singers today got extremely perfect voice and ways of singing. But he is different, incompleteness touches a very profound emotion from inside of a poet's body, which creates something beyond the word "beautiful".
which is why Anne Hathaway's song in Les Mis was one of the most incredible cinematic songs ever made. No prerecording, no clean lyrics, just real words with real emotion
This song is so much better when people stop trying to make a hymn out of it. This is a poem about struggle in relationship. It is much better when it's sung roughly like this. It means more. I love this version.
IMO the song works really well both ways. It is so beautifully written lyrically and the melody itself is amazing. It honestly is more about what it means to the artist and how well you can relate to that feeling
Seems like a song about struggling and losing a more traditional religious faith but finding a sort of solace or faith in something more personal and less theoretical. Can't understand how people sing it as a Christmas song. Also, it never sounds right when sung by some fresh-faced youths like Pentatonix (not saying Rice's version is like that). Nothing against fresh-faced youths, but you have to have struggled mightily over a long period to truly sing this one, IMHO.
Yes a lovely tribute to the one & only Leonard Cohen by a man who understands the depth & emotion of the words. Thank you Damien. Love your own work too, a real poet of our times.
I so love his voice, always sings with such feeling, tells a story. So many just sing but do not feel the song. ps. He has a shape of a heart on his forehead. Damian you are so loved.
his own songs are genius, but fuck he can cover songs like no one else. This is beautiful (as was his cover of Creep) - Damien has a voice like no other
Damien IS MAGIC! BEST COVER EVER! ❤ always looking FOR MORE, cannot get enough! Wish America would wake up!!! He should be all over OUR RADIO and play shows here 😢
I LOVE THIS SONG!! AND I LOVE THE WAY RICE SINGS. HIS SONGS, THIS ONE AND 9 CRIMES GIVE ME GOOSE BUMPS AND I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF HEARING EITHER SONG FROM RICE. AND THANK YOU MR. COHEN. GOD BLESSED YOU AND YOU SHARED THAT BLESSING WITH OTHERS. REST IN PEACE.
Thank you so much for uploading this. The world needed this right now, more than ever. A heartfelt performance from a wonderful performer. Leonard, we miss you.
Every time I listen to your music the little girl within me cries and your version of Hallelujah hands down is the greatest, if you were here I would go to church to listen to you play every day. God bless you Jeff Buckley ☮️♥️🙏🏾🫂.
I love Damien’s voice! 🎼 I could listen to it all day ❤️ Maybe it’s the Scott in me? Keep making Music Damien it makes your souls shine through! ❤️🎄 Merry Christmas 🎁
Love the guitar accompaniment..so nice. Good singing too..ha! The story of Bathsheba intertwined with the story of Sampson and Delilah...Leonard could tell a profound story in his songs.
I heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth The minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to her kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... There was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do you ? But remember when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was hallelujah, hm hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... Maybe there's a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you It's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah...
If this be blasphemy, so be it, but I like this better than Jeff Buckley’s version. It’s clear without being over-enunciated, and I’m spared that odd intro that sounds like Buckley is tuning up.
