Stefan started to parallel Matt in S3. "You can't string him along, Elena. If you're not into it anymore, just tell him." That's why Elena wanted to talk to Stefan, but she wasn't supposed to until later. "Stefan. Forget it. Um-we-we can talk later." Because she didn't talk to Matt until later. "I just can't bring myself to tell him. At least not tonight." She wouldn't tell Stefan until after her death, just as she didn't tell Matt until after the death of her parents. That's why you don't actually see her break up with Matt. Fans would've known what was coming. 3x21 tells you she's gonna make two choices. "And you know that sooner or later, you're gonna have to choose, right?" She's gonna make a choice sooner AND later. Elena's toast in 3x21 also tells you who she's gonna pick sooner. "And to all of you. My family." That's why she tells Damon, "Not just to Stefan, Damon. To Tyler. To Caroline." Those one or two details Kai is missing in S6. Stefan is not her boyfriend, he's her best friend... her family. Damon's desire for Elena to get everything she's looking for came full circle as she found everything she's looking for in him. That's why she said, "I can't think about always, all I can think about is right now." Damon is her always. She needed more time to admit that truth, but time wasn't on her side. This pulls in Matt's comment in the pilot episode. "Give it more time, Matt." That's why Damon was supposed to stay in town. Elena would find her way back to him. "It doesn't matter if I have memories or not. It doesn't matter if I'm a vampire or not." She will always find her way BACK to Damon. 3x19 follows into 3x22. Elena: Stefan thinks that I have feelings for you. Damon: Do you? Elena: I - I don't - I don't know. Elena: I don't know how I feel. Miranda: Yes, you do. You're just afraid to say it. Damon was telling her the same thing, and he just met her. Elena: I don't know what I want. Damon: Well, that's not true. She's afraid of losing Stefan's friendship. Stefan's kiss in 3x22 is just like Matt's kiss in flashback. Their parallels continue. Stefan would have a hard time watching her move on with Damon, as Matt had a hard time watching her move on with Stefan. "I still believe in us. And I'm not giving up on that." That's why Stefan fights to cure Elena. He thinks it will make her unfall for Damon. Stefan will eventually embrace Delena as Matt embraced Stelena. Damon has the vampire girlfriend he came back home for in the pilot episode. This is good full circle writing.
