Damped Vibrations, Over damping, Critical damping and under damping
Playlist for Simple harmonic motion and connected theories of double degree freedom, multidegree vibrations and applications etc;
• Simple Harmonic Motion...
A damped oscillation or vibration, some external force acts in the direction to reduce the extent of vibration i.e., to kill the energy of vibration. A shock absorber of an automobile is a good example of damped vibration. The shock absorber consists of a spring which is compressed or expanded by the hills and valleys subjected by the road however the vehicle does not vibrates, the reason being, we do not want the vehicle to vibrate (It is annoying) so a damper is provided together with spring which kills the energy of vibration rapidly resulting in no vibration. There are three types of damping which we will learn in this lecture i.e., Over damping, Critical damping and under damping. I am not explaining the mathematical derivations but giving an overview about the damping theory which is helpful for knowledge gaining point of view.
