Hamersley Iron awarded McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd, in joint venture, the contract to construct The Dampier Port Upgrade (DPU) project in Dampier, Western Australia.
Delivered in stages, MacDow was responsible for the construction of Phase A. This involved the construction of a 455 m wharf extension and a new access jetty, tail end structure and electrical deck. Modifications to the existing wharf were also required.
The upgrade of their Dampier Port Facilities was the centrepiece of Hamersley Iron's A$1 billion capital works program for their iron ore assets in Western Australia. The main wharf extension required 24 vertical and 72 raking piles which were 1,200 mm in diameter and up to 38 m long. The wharf piles were driven through a purpose built frame and gates; and were supported on spud piles for stability and accuracy of driving. A fleet of barges equipped with specialist piling equipment was mobilised from our Batam Fabrication Facility in Indonesia.
A key part of the MacDow solution was the use of modularisation to speed up the construction program. Four deck modules each 54 m long and 18 m wide were cast in Perth and freighted to the site by a heavy-lift ship mobilised from Amsterdam. Each module weighed almost 400 tonnes and was lifted into place, "instantly" adding 216 metres of new deck to the wharf.
Eighteen new dolphins were also constructed using a cluster of four raker piles in the centre under the wharf and 2 longitudinal raker piles. These piles ranged in size from 700 mm to 1200 mm in diameter.
Drawing on our mechanical and electrical expertise, the project team delivered new materials handling infrastructure including a conveyor system; transfer tower; and drive and take up structures. An extension and modifications were also made to the existing conveyor system.
Working within the confines of an existing operational wharf required close collaboration and constant communication between the MacDow project team and Hamersley's operations staff. The facility remained fully operational throughout the expansion. Delivered on time and on budget, our performance on the project led to the negotiation and awarding of Phase 2 of the expansion works as the sole contractor.
