Four dams are being removed from the Klamath River in Northern California. The local Native American tribe is hopeful the removal will help restore the salmon population in the river, which was devastated by the dams' construction. Ben Tracy has the story.

We have people up here trying to build a giant dam at the head of one of our most productive salmon spawning grounds up here in AK. As always, they claim there will be “no damage” to our salmon spawning grounds but history proves them wrong. So we continue to be forced to spend money to keep an eye out for whatever back door bribery they do to keep it from going away completely. And boy oh boy do our politicians in Juneau love taking that money!

The only reason they are doing this is because the dam is old and not producing money. If it was still making good money for electricity, they would never do this. They are not doing this out of the kindness of their heart.

Real reason for removal. Money. Dams cost more to maintain and in this case they need a staggering amount of money to upgrade. So it cost more money to operate the dam than the dam was making selling power. Secondly, salmon is highly profitable commercially. Painting it as altruistic or environmentally conscious is misleading because the powers that be don't care about either of those two. They care about money.

Actually this electrical infrastructure was end of life and the cost to replace hydroelectric equipment versus the amount of power it produced didn’t make economic sense. Cheaper to produce electricity with solar panels which combined with grid scale battery storage can give us 7x24 power at a cheaper rate. PS - some of these dams also did not meet modern earthquake engineering standards so retrofitting would have been an additional unknown cost.

Once we complete the green energy transition, we should continue to remove some dams that are essential to the survival of these fish species as more and more green energy comes on line. With some places drying out due to climate change, we will have to continue maintaining some dams for water storage.

The mud from the removed dams is killing the new salmon. It will takes 5 years before the sediment washes out and the river is restored.

Don't states and federal government have biologist? I would think that with all their research and development they could discover a way to restore the fishery without removing dams and power generation. I look at the removal of the dam's as a way for the government to force Americans into their green new deal and electric vehicles.
@loragunning5394
@loragunning5394 2 месяца назад
The dams were privately owned and operated by a power company not associated with any form of government, other than being subject to governmental oversight for safety and maintenance. The power company that owned the dams made the decision over 10 years ago that installing fish ladders to enable the salmon to by-pass the dams and to upgrade the structure of the dams to current safety standards in a highly active seismic zone was not financially feasible, given the low output of hydro power the dams generated, so the decision was made (by the power company) to de-commission the dams and tear them down. In the decade since that decision was made, both the power company and the residents along the river and the reservoir lakes have been working with (and paying for) the advice of environmental scientists of many areas of specialty (biologists included) and construction specialists to formulate a plan of action for removing the dams with the least amount of damage possible. That's one of the many reasons it took over 10 years after the decision was made to remove the dams for the actual removal work to actually happen. These removals had zero to do with any governmental agency conspiracy to force US citizens to accept a "green deal" or to buy electric vehicles. It was all about a private company deciding to cut their losses and move on. And as the video stated, removing the dams is a huge and very costly project, so perhaps you can imagine what it would have cost to keep the dams in place, if it's better for the company's bottom line to spend millions to have them removed.
