He was a very talented actor and a very intelligent man. I just loved him as “Hoss” on Bonanza, and was heartbroken as a child to learn of his passing on the show. My Dad and I always watched the Westerns on TV when I was growing up. Great and precious memories. 💙
He was well-read, educated, and seemed to have a real love of life. I wish there were more like him today. Almost every famous person today seems to be either hyper-PC, or on the other "side". People used to have more freedom of opinion.

I agree completely. He spoke with respect and like he was afraid he was saying something offensive. People now days don't care if they come across as rude or vulgar.
what do you mean 'common Sense'? His whole explanation of why the show would go 15 years was nonsensical...he was just a pompous actor who thought he was the smartest guy in the room.
Hoss was my favorite character from Bonanza, great actor. This was prophetic. HIs last episode was Season 13 Episode 26, aired April 2 1972, He passed away in May 13, 1972, the show ended after the following 14th year. He really was the heart and soul of that show. HIs intelligence was often hidden underneath the loveable Hoss's surface, but it always came out in these interviews. He was a decorated combat veteran of the Korean war, serving as an infantry sergeant, Most people think or assume he died of a heart attack. He had gallbladder surgery, which I believe was deemed successful, went home but developed a blood clot in his lung, which caused his death. Very sad end to a wonderful life.
I enjoyed this interview with him decades after he passed away. I always enjoyed Dan as Hoss. His son looks and talks just like him brings back wonderful memories and many laughs during the 13 Seasons he was on Bonanza. R i p oh, return if possible is another meeting I learned the last year during 2020. Betty Gordon, Ames, Iowa
Thank you for the info. I didn't know he was a Korean war veteran. I sort of remember watching Bonanza growing up and remember the Cartwright's. I only learned that Dan Blocker died at such a young age just recently. It's so sad because things in his life seemed to be going good and a year or so later he would die from complications from surgery. It goes to show you never know when you're last day will be.

The quesion about being superstisious going into the 13th season of Bonanza is very eerie. It was his last season with the show. He died quite young, on May 13, 1972. Rest in peace big guy...
David Blocker (Dan's oldest son) said in an interview that Michael Landon was overwhelmed with grief when Dan died. He said each year on the anniversary of his dad's death (May 13) Michael Landon would travel alone to Dan's burial site at Woodmen Cemetery in DeKalb, Texas to leave flowers and say a prayer over Dan's grave. I believe I read that Landon's daughter, Leslie, still makes a trip each year to Dan's grave site to leave flowers.

I am awed by how many actors in decades past had another career, possibility that showed strength of character, intelligence, patriotism, and more. No doubt a HUGE factor that I watch considerably more movies and TV series from years past over the PC garbage of today! :-)

Thanks, " Beauty is as Beauty Does" the song I sang live for DON Blocker the day I accidentally walked into Hank's office by mistake! Praying for Afghanistan and the Ukraine" "God Gave Them One More Day" I Ain't no Middleman" FredGold& LyndaFaye "LyndaFayeSmusic@gmail.com) and at Yahoo, if I get censored for using the word God too often?
He moved to Southern California to work on his PhD in English Literature at UCLA in the 1950s. To support himself and his family he took bit parts as an actor and his acting career took off.
Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but I heard Dan Blocker had a photographic memory. They said he could look over a script one time and have all his lines memorized! Hoss was definitely the glue that held Bonanza together, and I still watch it daily all these years later
@@rayjr62 WOW, MR. PHIPPS! LOOK at Lynn Wood's comment, and see if you don't see a VIDEO the two of YOU could create and dedicate to DAN BLOCKER'S LEGACY ? I always loved this guy (that's Dan Blocker, not YOU, sorry!) and I type 100 wpm, so I can help; but you guys would have to EDIT the words; (no time to look back you see!)I'll paste this for you btw on Lynn Wood (wondered if that was a female Lynn or the famous attorney, Lynn Wood ? Well, as John Wayne used to say, "I got my copy paste and I'm a GUNNA USE IT !" One of the few things Google did right/ Microsoft, duh? Seems to me it's the ARROGANT HOSTS that elicit the inarticulate appropriateness of "today's" interview shows. They're moreover about the hosts needing a screen test sample to show , than the actors they're interviewing ? I think he had "allot more under his belt" w/ more cleverness "up his sleeve" than he had time to express ? such as Michael Landon "was" or "became" the Little House on the Prairie?" DAN WAS the "gentle heart character " that WAS " Bonanza." I used to love to make up titles back then (and still , ha) and thought a whole show should have been devoted TO Dan Blocker, and title it " Gentle Heart?" Gee , maybe I'll copyright that tonight.(.Sounds like 'a song comin' ON" HERE yes ?) Well, said, and this in regard to an actor whose private life wasn't displayed as so many video-makers do today to their actors. (Think I have a list of those inaccuracies somewhere by now!). TEXAN, huh? Bet he'd have allot to say TODAY about China, Afghanistan, the Ukraine, Putin and the Fake Administration of Gangsters flopping around pretending they know anything about helping THEIR OWN PEOPLE ? What a great "character' he was-So now we see he was " Two Great Characters! " yes? RIP Dan ! @@rayjr62 Now that I review my comment, I think I see a COLLABORATION of writers here or at least admieres of this man, who could and SHOULD put these facts all, perhaps, into a BOOK? If not a video... How does JTO 0 below KNOW "ALL THE ACTORS worked well with each other ? was he back stage for any of the filming ? Perhaps as in the Barbara Streisand sequel, they did not, and just came together during the readings and filming ? I'm asking him... but all three of your comments are really inspiring... (Yes and I used to live two blocks away from the UCLA Law library, ha )
Gosh this is the only interview I have seen of Mr Blocker he was such an incredible actor. I know he appeared on talk shows but there are none on You Tube. I grew up in the UK with Bonanza but only up to 1970 as I then left home to do my registered nurse training so did not see the last few seasons. Since we have been in total lockdown I have been catching up rewatching all the episodes again and it reminded me of very happy days of my youth. So whoever posted this thank you.
Interesting that he sort of acknowledged that the show, going into it's 13th season, only had maybe a couple of more seasons left. At the time Bonanza's ratings were in steep decline. I also only recently discovered that he was the highest educated of the main cast.
I grew up Watching Bonanza in late 60's. Sadly Dan Blocker passed away in 1972. Great show, Loved the cast. I still watch the reruns every now and then..
Was an interesting interview. He demonstrated that he was a highly educated person. He had his M.A. degree & dropped out of the Ph.D program to pursue acting. It would be interesting to speculate where he would have ended up if he had lived. He had been a teacher, was interested in politics, & was a good actor. Would he have gone back to teaching? Would he have entered politics like Ronald Reagan or Sonny Bono? Would he have continued acting? One can only wonder.
Yes I was a kid when He died, well 17, that seems like a kid to me today, now we buy Refrigerators from "Them" & we better be good or "They" may just wipe "Us" out
What an incredible site to see this interview. Feels like it was just recent. Never will there ever be another cast of Bonanza. RIP to all. Love all especially Hoss.
I knew that Lorne Greene, Parnell Roberts, and Dan Blocker all wore toupees on Bonanza, but I had never seen Dan Blocker without his hairpiece. He is almost unrecognizable. But the voice is pure "Hoss"!
He talked very well and he said the Destruction of them or the Destruction of us he understood what it was like to be a Human Being Rest in Peace Dan Blocker
EXTREMELY sad for a man who's "acting life" really had just begun ...I wondered if that COLLEGE DEGREE was WORK -when a man has a family to support AND a full-time-JOB ANYWHERE... Have you seen the comment above BY LYNN WOOD ? Like to see a BOOK about this man from some who personally knew him; or at least a well-assembled video ....A VIDEO of some public domain footage connected with DAN BLOCKER'S MILITARY EXPERIENCE ? Extreme INTELLIGENCE! Excellent person I'm sorry he is gone. Especially for such a short life. I was seven when this video was recorded. God bless him.
