Yep. Tom Brokaw retired in December 2004, Rather was ousted in March, 2005, and Peter Jennings became sick in early April and was diagnosed with cancer. sad that the era of these three giants came to an end all at once.
I like that he said, "...to the oppressed and to those whose lot in life is to struggle in financial hardship or in failing health..." I think this man really cared and cares about all the people he mentioned in his final sign-off, which included just about every one of us.
Even though he left the CBS Evening News anchor desk before he wanted to, he was still there for twenty-four years, which beats even Walter Cronkite, of memory.
As many times as I had my eyes glued to this channel for world news, I often looked at Dan Rather as more than just a reporter. I also looked at him as a warrior, and this farewell speech became proof.

I remember watching this the night it aired. Dan was one of my favorite broadcast journalists, in addition to Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings. When the last of the three left and eventually died, that was really the end of informative network evening news.

Dan Rather is arguably the last great American journalist. It was a slap in the face that they shared his patriotic exit music with a Wal-Mart commercial. Shame on you, CBS. Way to show some respect to the man who carried your news program for 40 years.
Capitalism has always been indelibly intertwined with the business of reporting the news, or more accurately what news the media outlets' patrons want reported. Big money drives the media in the US, so it should be no surprise that Rather was sent off with an add for the store that is capitalist greed, personified.

Back when network news was legit and no-BS. Dan, Tom and especially Peter were the three men you could trust. Nowadays, it's full tabloid and agenda driven trash. It's really sad to see what has happened to our media.
I remember watching him growing up, his voice is so iconic and soothing. He was one of the main faces of CBS, outside of David Letterman. Dan Rather is one of the most respected journalists of our time. I miss seeing him on the air!
Bill Cosby was respected until he was outed as a serial rapist. Some reputations are built on lies. Dan Rather knowingly put out a false news story and got the heave-ho for that.
That was the first day of my 24th year on earth. I was living in Marietta, GEorgia right down the road from the Big Chicken on Roswell Road. I had been in town, a transplant from Carol City, for three months at the time. I did have many friends yet and I mostly saw t my evenings, alone, at home, watching CBS. I remember the feeling of loss. The feeling of an era ending. My father who I called later that evening, recalled the time that Cronkite called it a career with a similar emotion. It's been 15 years now. Ly life has changed and reassembled during that time in ways I had never imagined. I like to think as I reflect on the retirement of Mr. Rather that in a way he helped prepare me for the tumultuous road ahead. He fortified me and perhaps all of us with a quite dignity and mental strength that surely say us all thru. Thank you for the confidence instilled through your wisdom and steadfastness Mr. Rather. Rather didn't retire, he was forced out of CBS for knowingly putting out a false news report. And Cronkite hated Bush but agreed that Rather should have been fired.
This may sound a little childish LOL, but I remember being close to tears at the end of this broadcast when it orriginally aired! When we lost Brokaw, Rather, and Jennings, we lost true journalism!

My family and I used to watch Dan over dinner. I remember watching a C-SPAN program in August of 2004 (I’m not sure when it happened) that featured Rather, Brokaw and Jennings. A year later Brokaw had retired, Rather was pretty much forced out, and Jennings passed away from lung cancer. How thing change! The Big Three: News will never be like that again.
Dan Rather was forced out for knowingly reporting a false news story and getting caught. That is how t5he news industry works. Walter Cronkite also hated President Bush but he agreed Rather had to go.

@tvnutboy Those are very wise words indeed. Dan is a great reporter and he likes to tell important stories that we need to hear. Do you still see him on MSNBC a lot? I do and on his program on HDNet. Next year the veteran reporter turns 80 and I hope I get to meet him one day to say "You are the best sir!!!"
Dan Rather was the news. He was a the best reporter ever. He was a good, honest man. Norah O’Donnell will never hold a candle next to Dan. CBS made career suicide the day they let Dan go.

I’m glad for Bernard Goldberg, Lara Logan, Sharyl Attkisson, Catherine Herridge and other brave journalists who paid the price-Ratherbiased accused Goldberg of being “disloyal” even though journalists make their living by finding whistleblowing leakers willing to buck their bosses-for speaking truth to the power of mainstream media information dominance in general and CBS in particular.
I would rather listen too Dan Rather than ANYONE on FOX News anyday, Dan just told the news not his DAMN OPINION like FOX News does! And doesn't create conspirasies like they do!

During the OJ standoff after the car chase, Dan and Connie Chung were watching the video of OJ's driveway with the truck parked in it. Dan was saying that it looked like a cop was sneaking up from the back. Connie corrected him and said, "Dan I think that's the spare tire." After that, any time Dan Rather would flub his lines, my dad would yell at the TV, "Come on Dan, it's a spare tire!" Good memories.
I miss Dan, he was good at what he did and made Election Nights fun. He made a big mistake with the Bush scandal but I respect him still. Pelley's the perfect replacement for Dan.
