Dan was a successful hitmaker for a while, first in soft rock, then in Country, but "Everything that glitters is not gold" stands above many fine songs as his definitive masterpiece. The storytelling, the melody and the vocals just come together seamlessly: it's a song that does everything right and stops you in your tracks. I wouldn't even know where to start to put together a criteria to grade songs, but I know this is the standard for what Country music is and does.

Shakespeare is still alive in 2024 because that is where the title comes from but then it was "Everything that glisters is not gold" from The Merchant of Venice. You went up .1 this time, last time you gave it a 9.8.

To me his best vocal performance is on "Addicted".

It's getting trendy lately to talk about 90s country, which certainly was great. But 80s country isn't recognized enough. It was a fantastic era, and Dan Seals was a big reason for that.

You're right. The original came from his album "Won't Be Blue". Which is a great album by the way.

Raymond thank you for an excellent request. I love this song as it tells a very true but highly ignored story, a woman who abandons her child and family to chase her dreams. We always hear about “bad fathers” but in my experience a woman like this can be more evil and conniving than any man. It is easy to become addicted to our 15 minutes of fame, however one should keep their feet on the ground as well. Don I truly enjoyed your commentary as you shared some significant truths.

I just went back and reviewed your first reaction 3 yrs ago. Different recording as it was a live show. Dans voice was a little less sharp. He struggled to hit the falsettos. The performance was amazing. All the way through i knew you were going to give it a 10. Now i listen to this and its amazing.all the way through i know you're going to give this a 10. ....... 9.8 and a 9.9....huh. i think your feeler guage needs calibrating...😂. Then 3 years ago you made many of the same coments as today. My favorite being " political Horseshit, and " political bullshit"...... I love you man.

The first time you reacted, you did a live version of Dan when he was older and didn't have the vocal power anymore. But the video had a dozen legendary singers from 50s-70s which is a bit if a distraction from the music.

Is this the radio released version? Or one that was cleaned up? It seems slower than the one that was on the radio, but that was 35 years ago...

Thanks you Raymond for this brilliant request. It's one of my all time faves, and it gets me every time. It was a co-write by Dan and Bob Mcdill (Bob is an exceptional writer). Thanks Don for the wonderful reaction and the great rating.

Check out "Someone Else's Dance" also by Dan Seals. This one isn't very well known but it's an awesome cut about how life can change your best laid plans and you end up in a miracle. I would love to see a reaction video to it. Great content. I'm now a subscriber. Great job man.

The original studio recording of this song is the best. His "In a Quiet Room" recordings were slightly more subdued.

Thanks Raymond for this request of another Dan Seals song. Dan co-wrote this with Bob McDill. This song was released in 1985. It was Dan's first #1 hit of his 11 after England Dan and John Ford Coley broke up. What has me perplexed, is that both parents are on the rodeo circuit so there has to be times where paths cross.. Thanks for the review. Off subject, so do we or don't we redo songs?
