Dan (John Goodman) is frustrated that Becky (Lecy Goranson) and Darlene (Sara Gilbert) meddled in his love life, but they get him to admit he's having a hard time getting over Roseanne's death. Watch 'The Conners' TUESDAY 8|7c on ABC.
I love Becky's reaction in this scene. This was the live episode, and that's how it was presented on the east coast, but when it's in syndication now they apparently play the west coast version, and that doesn't cut away from Dan so you don't get to see her reaction!
John is probably one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. But he's never had a bad word said about him as far as I know, so I think everybody loves him. He's worked with the absolute best in the business. He's the reason this show continued after they fired Rosanne. Without him they would have simply cancelled the whole thing.
@@jasonkreider8954 that's true. What's also true is that he beat it, lost weight, got in shape and got right with himself. I see him from time to time and he's great!
I agree. That was great. One of the best scenes is when Darlene goes to bail him out of jail afterwards. Unfortunately Dan looks like a deflated balloon now. He looks sickly instead of intimidating.
The BEST part of that episode (and 1 of my top 2 favorite scenes from the entire original series) is when Darlene shows up to bail Dan out, after being jailed for beating up Fisher. "Well, well well well well.... I'll bet when you imagined this, you pictured yourself on the Other side of those bars.. ... since I'm a minor, I have to give the money to the suspect..which, I guess would be You... ..A lot has changed since you've been in the 'big house'. Mommy says that we have a new daddy now!" -Darlene Then after he's bailed out and back home, Darlene butts in to say "Hey Dad, the newspaper is on the phone, they need a picture to run with the article. Should I send them the one of you dressed as baby new year? Or just tell them to use your mugshot?"
Give Dan time folks...after a very happy 30 yr marriage I lost my darling husband 6 yrs ago...can't even fathom being with someone else...we all heal in our own way and our own time.
@@LEGENDPantherJennings Thank you so much. Lee was a wonderful man, husband, father and grandfather. loving, kind and an American Patriot and war hero. Irreplaceable!
@William Thornhill Thank you so much; yes Lee was an exceptional man & I do understand we were blessed. I think we were easy on each other, and that helped very much. We had ultimate trust in the other, and the more we encouraged the other to feel free to spend time with buddies or friends ( I always thought it was good for him to spend time at a VFW or American Legion to talk with men who had also served or had been in combat etc., and he always told me to feel free to have dinner or lunch with my old neighborhood GFs. It was so funny, Will. The more freedom and trust we gave the other, the more we wanted to be with one another! LOL! I do think that many women & men too, feel a lot more than they show. Maybe it's how they were raised, maybe it's just a natural shyness or lack of confidence. But I woudn't be surprised if your wife would be devastated at the thought of losing you. Try reaching out a little more, open up a bit. She may be wishing for a closer relationship too. I hope you live a long and happy life, and your marriage is also blessed by God. Pray for it. It is what we did. God bless you both.
@William Thornhill I can see you have had a challenging 16 yrs, Will. You must have thought highly of your daughter to keep trying to stick it out for her. You should be proud of that. I only had one relationship in my entire life with someone who was insecure and jealous... and as is so often the case, it was because he had had a long history of cheating himself. It was unbearable to me, I got out very quickly. I felt like I unloaded a ton of lead. But of course there was no marriage or children involved, so I didnt have the need to try to mend it. About 6 mos after we were done I got a call from a GF of mine who was laughing herself silly...Apparently one of the gals this jerk had been cheating on me with had become his fiance & the wedding was at hand. His intended was very late, and then someone walked in with an announcement from the "Bride". She'd learned weeks ago that he had been cheating on her the entire time, but felt it was a good lesson for him to continue to spend his money on a big party to impress his friends...and a good lesson in humility to be left standing at the alter alone. I must admit I did get a chuckle out of it. A couple of weeks later I received a call from this brave woman. She had just learned that he was seeing me and begging me to marry him when he was cheating with her. I'd heard she was a lovely girl and seriously doubted she knew a thing about me. I was right! Thats what she wanted to tell me...she would never have done that knowingly. I told her I'd never known about her either til she left him at the alter. I had only broken up with him because I could not tolerate his insecurity and jealousy. I didn't feel I deserved it. I was never a cheat. She admitted he was that way with her too. We both thanked God we got out before any real damage was done. But it is a heavy load when youre going through it. Do you think your wife would see a counselor? You're both still there for a reason...it could be love. That would be great.
@William Thornhill You might be able to tell I'm having a few computer problems. My son is on the way to try to fix them. But I hope this works. I wish you and your family well. I hope everything works out for all of you and you find happiness. Hang in..Life has blessings waiting around every corner. God Bless you and yours!
I love how they're not just having Dan forget about Roseanne and move on, it's making the show more realistic. But I really love the character of Louise and how she fits into the family, so maybe he can through the magic of television speed up his mourning a bit LoL
You're talking about the only equivalent to Rosanne on a sitcom about lower income mom's because Peggy Bundy was the Queen. So it's probably easy for her to slip right back into a role like that after 30 years
yes, they, Roseanne and Dan were married all their adult lives to each other, they started dating when Roseanne was 16 so unless Dan loses his memory, how can he forget. he can find love again but that dosent mean he wil...forget her
Mourning and grieving...what a knee-slapper! 🙄 I, sincerely, hope that you never lose the person that you've planned to "life up". Grief is a hairy, wild animal. It's too tough, for the faint of heart.
@@masuganut2082 Because it *was* less special. Face it. They got hitched too young and figured to stay married instead of divorcing and dying alone. They loved each other, but they fell out of love years ago.
🤣 "TV can be weird like that." Understatement of the century. We're rapidly approaching 100 years since the first television broadcasts ever in 1935, and there is no terminus to the rabbit hole of weirdness we've seen since then.
Is it me or is John Goodman really gotten very skinny lately? Is he like sick with something because I’ve been noticing that he’s really been getting very skinny lately. I mean does he have like cancer or something because I know that he’s getting old but I never remember him being this skinny before.
@Nathan C Goodman never bad mouthed her from what I understand. Pretty sure he was the only cast member that didn't throw Barr under the bus to save his own skin. Gilbert is the p.o.s. that pretty much immediately jump on Barr and did damage control with the media. Frankly, I wish they would just bring her back. Yeah, the character is dead, but they could retcon that with a dream sequence. I stopped watching after they killed her off. I saw the first episode of The Conners ad was so disgusted with how they handled her character. I honestly think that John Goodman has influence over his character's portrayal which is why Dan still hasn't gotten over his wife's death. I think if the writer's has 100% say over it, they would make it so that he was over her already. Look at Darlene and Becky telling him he should be over her already. The characters were married for 45 years! Telling him to get over his dead wife after just 2 years is pretty damn cold.
I think that’s why they had the other actor Lol but even she wasn’t that good I think. Very commercial like but still better then the original chick there using now
The laugh track in this clip felt terribly misplaced. This scene felt a lot more serious, then I started hearing all this inserted laughter at moments that felt more emotional and I just cashed out after that.
@@labellamaffia it’s a live audience - but yes a lot of people find it grating. I assume in this case it was to keep with the original show, as scripted sitcoms taped in front of live audiences are falling out of favor.
Laugh tracks have Never made sense. The viewers of any given TV show are Watching the show...so, they are at Least "smart enough" for the material that is covered in [insert sitcom title here] episode. The laugh track (and/or live audience laughter) seems to be telling the viewers When to laugh... So then it's Extra awkward when they film outdoors/on location because it's oddly 'quiet' after a line is delivered that was 'supposed to be funny'...it makes everything so 'uncomfortable'.
If she ever does come back, you know they’re gonna write something awful/hilarious like Beverly had Roseanne committed to an old folks home and Roseanne had to break outta there in a badass rampage!
@@unclegumbald989 probably the most "reasonable" excuse that I can come up with is that she was in a coma this whole time and the hospital confused her with another coma patient who happened to look very similar to her and her system failed, all the while no one found out about it because both their medical papers were switched around by accident. That's the best idea I got so far, this is the reason why you don't kill off a fundamental character like Roseanne cause if you do then regret it later then it's hard to "un-kill" them back into the story without it seeming forced.
Actually a cheap but effective way to bring her back is for Dan to wake up one morning and say "oh my god i had the worst nightmare!" Then roseane wakes up and says, "lemme guess, i died or something?" Then the crowd laughs and cheers
...did you even watch the original show? Their whole existence is depressing; it hangs on bad credit, DIY plumbing, and toxic sarcasm. That's the whole show. The Conners updated to take the economic late stage capitalism prolapse into account, along with the pandemic, and fuck yes, it's even MORE depressing, because their interpersonal problems, compounded with living in modern-day 'merica in a decrepit, on-death-row small town is a REALITY for a FUCKTON of the people watching, and it's nice to be able to relate to a sitcom that doesn't try to sell us fairy tales or celebrity glitter. If you don't like it change the fucking channel. Lottery Dream Home is on HGTV.
@@BVBloom It's funny that so many people who proclaim to have loved the show so much seem to have missed the entire point. The situation for those struggling to even make it into the middle class certainly hasn't improved between the two eras.
I'm not and I wasn't even a huge fan of the original. ABC messed up and stomped on her right to free speech. Doesn't matter whether or not you approve of what she said.
I watched every episode of Roseanne when I was younger and I’ve never seen an episode of the new Roseanne show and it really freaked me out to see how old everyone had gotten especially the kids
Bet your ass and it's being renewed for a 3rd season, meaning people are liking it. You can hate that all you want, but in my opinion this only proves that Rosanne was not the sole reason the orignal show was good. The other actors were just as capable of pulling out some amazing performances and could hold entire scenes or even episodes worth of screen time without Rosanne there.
Who the heck is Dan Goodman? Have you watched this show before? His name is John Goodman. The character's name is Dan Connor!!!!!!!!!!!! You actually received 35 likes. 35 other people don't know his name.
That was an awesome scene...Dan tells em go to your room! Becky defiantly proclaims "We Are Not Children!" To which Dan non-chalantly replies "Do you want to pay Rent?" And then Darlene tells becky go go go and they both run away...
THey're still living at home at what 40? Darlene at least had had a good education.. how come she still seems to be poor and a messed up creature. In fact the whole family seems to be a set of social problems.. and its not funny... The original Roseanne wasn't a great show, Roseanne Barr was always rather crazy, but it had some funny moments
I miss Roseanne, I watched the show when I was 13, 16, in my 20s, 30s, and now going back when I'm in my 40's. I miss Roseanne in the show. Watching the show gives me comfort.
I really do get upset about the whole Roseanne being gone thing, but the other thing I took notice from if she was here, the rest of the cast wouldn't be able to step up like the way they have all been doing. Wonderful performances by all!
I wonder if Dan telling Becky and Darlene that he, not them, was going to figure out how to move on from Roseanne is a throwback to the Mother's Day episode where Becky and Darlene made Roseanne cry, infuriating Dan; and when he confronted them, they said they would figure out a way to make it up to her, only for Dan to shut them down, saying he would figure it out himself.
Can't believe John Goodman continued to do the show, on the character having Dan dating and moving on and the direction they have the characters is just stupid. Becky was smart now have her playing mark. Darlene was always strong, fast witty, and went her own direction, but was had a good heart and did the right thing. now they have her a yoke left winger, who has to go to therapy. Sort of playing her real self. Jackie doesn't even reference her son her character has nothing really to play of of. Dj they dont even give his character much time. Just pops in to pick up his daughter. The kids playing Darlene children are annoying to watch. Actually without Roseanne vision of the show it's a joke.
Aww that's very sad to know that he and Louise is not together anymore because they should get back together and get marry he needs to be happy and she makes him happy
I could never get into this show. It’s not the same without roseanne. She made the show. ABC you need to get over it and bring her show back already. This show sucks.
The humor kills the tension. Let the scene breath, there’s a time for humor, but not in moments when you try to develop a character. He’s heartbroken and believes he’s lost something he can’t regain, stop adding jokes to because it’s a comedy. Play the scene out without jokes, let him explain how he feels and tell the girls how disappointed he is with them, and let the girls have a moment for them to realize their mistakes.
That's how sitcoms used to be. Now it's all about having a laugh cause "you can't be talking about deep stuff, you gotta make the people laugh to forget about it". Well, that's my 2 cents.
This is the live episode they did. I’m guessing that this was the second broadcast - they performed it twice for the different time zones - because in the version I watched Becky delivered her lines much better and there was a different camera angle of Dan sinking in frustration when she asks what happened. The camera was only focused on him, not the long shot seen in this clip.
Agreed, I posted this response before and I'll keep at it - "the show's not the same without her in it." Dan and Rosanne's chemistry was the heart and soul of the show.
