In my talk, I will discuss the disagreement between Gerda Walther and Aron Gurwitsch concerning the nature of community (what is most important: concrete bodily engagement or cultural heritage) and relate their phenomenological perspective to a recent account of nationalism offered by Bernard Yack.

This talk left everything it touched as they were, two categories were presented and some speculations about the subjective phenomenological states that people in such categories my report, but what is embodied? What aspect of a history or heritage can you select? Is it even up to the individual?

"Subjective appropriation" - I think that's what Werner von Braun told the mass slaves he personally supervised.

I believe that what makes a community different from other sorts of association is not a history or a heritage necessarily but a feeling of shared future. Whether we like each other or not, whether we just met or have known each other all our lives, the minute we realize we have a shared future, we become a community to the extend of what that shared future entails. Community form to deal with the future, it seems to me.
