In this video, I will be rebuilding an Dana 30 Narrow Track Front Axle. This is Part 2 that primarily covers Installing the Ring Gear on the new Spartan Helical LSD and calculating the starting depth of the new Motive Gear 3.73 Ring Gear Set.
This series will be available in a unique RU-vid Playlist and will include the following upgrades:
- Weld the Axle tubes to the Differential Housing (strength)
- Spartan Helical LSD Differential upgrade amzn.to/3RotZPW
- Motive Gear Ring and Pinion re-Gear from 3.54 to to 3.73 amzn.to/3Eb1aUc
- Motive Gear Master Rebuild Kit amzn.to/3SSlOwb
- Moog Upper Ball Joints amzn.to/3Eg5v8J
- Moog Lower Ball Joints amzn.to/3SFLyMq
- New Front U-Joints
- Media Blast Housing, Prime and Paint with VHT Primer and Paint
- Disc Brake refresh
- New Tie Rod and Drag Link
I have assembled a complete list of parts and many of the tools that I used during this rebuild in an Amazon Affiliate Store page which can be found at the following link: www.amazon.com/shop/influence...
All of this is being done to prepare this axle to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.
Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7 V8 Golden Eagle.

I was just given an 86 cj -7 with all the parts for it i mean everything, your videos are seriously making me consider putting the jeep together but from where its at it would still be a two to three project with my novice experience with these jeeps but your videos the more i watch them, are giving me the confidence to attempt it!

These ole Jeeps are relatively easy to work on and a great place to start. I have done general automotive work on my cars for many years. There are many firsts for me with this project. I am using the restoration of this Jeep to learn all of the details of restoration so that when I retire, I can start on an old Camaro. Don't get dragged down by the sight of the whole project. Focus and learn one piece at a time. It is very educational and rewarding. Have fun with yours! Mike

I picked up an 82 CJ5 and can’t tell you how much I appreciate the work and time you’ve spent filming these processes. It is very helpful to put some of the steps in video to understand more of what is going and and what to be looking out for. Thanks a million! #ProjectRowdy

Thanks for the detailed feedback. You've confirmed that you like the level of detail that I am providing. I feel it is very important to include all of the steps (at some level of detail), even the ones that I fail on. The hard parts are really the ones that you need to see.... as it may help you avoid them. Cheers and have a blast with your '82. Mike

Good video. Haven't done a differential yet. You probably know you can get a pinion depth tool however pricey. Glad to see the timken bearings. They are the way to go.
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Год назад
Yeah... Those tools are between $90 and $150. I just ca't justify in my mind spending that kind of money on a tool that you can get to the same answer with a little bit of time. Cheers and thanks for watching! Mike

I’m glad you are doing the explaining, teaching.. When i heat bearing i throw them in the oven at 450. And wait for them to turn golden brown. Then they’re a bit crunchy and tasty. You can also put the spur gear into the freezer. It’ll slid right together.

What grit flap wheel to make set ups
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Год назад
I'm pretty sure it was a 60 or 80 grit flap disc. I used very light pressure and used those sharpie marks to manage taking it off as even as I could. Cheers! Mike

why not .003 difference from the original shim pack?
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike Год назад
It might turn out to be that simple, but in my mind, and the kit that was replacing all of the components that affect the Pinion height, I wanted to incorporate how those items would affect that spacing. Another words, I felt if I was keeping the same Ring and Pinion and just putting in a new Bearing kit....the new bearings, Oil slinger, and baffle... those items had a different thickness that the original and I would have had to alter the Shim thickness for even that scenario. Anyway, it turns out to be a starting point and adjustments are often needed.
@DIRTVENTURE
@DIRTVENTURE Год назад
Od. I was just thinking how you might paint the set up bearings. So you don’t mix em up. And tada. You did.

Those bumpers are also not very strong. They are a very light tubing My 77 cj7 had one that was bent and twisted. It kissed a tree, or so i was told. Project rowdy. Hoping my diesel is going to be finished soon Replaced the turbo since the chineseuummm. Turbo blew oil out both sides after less then 45 minutes or heat cycling
