Carver Dana Andrews (January 1, 1909 - December 17, 1992) was an American film actor who became a major star in what is now known as film noir. A leading man during the 1940s, he continued acting in less prestigious roles and character parts into the 1980s. He is best known for his portrayal of obsessed police detective Mark McPherson in the noir Laura (1944) and his critically acclaimed performance as World War II veteran Fred Derry in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).

His voice never changed over the years, and his face only a little. Only the color of his hair!

Dana was an outstanding actor. He had his demons with alcohol but it is really hard not to like any movie he is in.

I hope Mr Andrew’s knew how beloved he was and is by the classic movie fans. We recognized his immense talent and contributions. Yes Sir! The 1941 film Swamp Water is one of my favorites too. It is full of true magical Southern swamp atmosphere plus a great story.

I have huge respect for the Andrews men...Dana..AND his kid brother Steve Forrest, who wrote me a most encouraging letter when I was a struggling writer so many years ago..Dana also did a PA for the National Council on Alcoholism, one of the very first to speak openly about the subject. His own struggles, making them public - something that was not done back in the day. Very brave of him, when you think about it. Along with BEST YEARS, and LAURA...I was also deeply moved by Dana's portrayal as one of the doomed trio in OX BOW INCIDENT, which is well worth watching. It explores the question of innocence...and how easily one can be fooled by circumstance and, make the wrong decisions...Mr. Andrews died of Alzheimer's, bless him. RIP.

I am currently reading the book about him "Hollywood Enigma." I had a hard time finding it. Dana Andrews was always one of my favorite actors, especially his noir films. I am finding that he had a lot in common with Robert Mitchum, being in so many noir films. Both he and Mitchum had that attractive baritone speaking voice and both were singers, too. Even at this advanced age, Dana was still charming and definitely leading man material! Class act.

What an enjoyable interview! The first time I saw a picture with Dana Andrews (3 years ago, I had never heard of him, he’s long long before my time), he made such an impression on me I had to look him up and start watching anything I could find with him in it. His real life decency/high moral standards shine through on the screen.

Watching Laura for my 1st time on Amazon ( I bought it knowing it was a good movie). As I often do on Amazon Prime, looking at the cast and trivia etc and found Dana’s info interesting. His life story in his details on Amazon prime. Side note, Studio City represent ! I’ve lived here since 96’ and saw he lived here. HAD to see a interview of him. This my 1st one I saw. Great interview, LOVED hearing him talk. Thank you for posting this interview on RU-vid. I’m 55 by the way. Take care.

I really like him in “Laura” and “State Fair” but he was all at sea in “Enchanted Island”, a real dud that ended the film career of Jane Powell.
