The DANA (the name being derived from "dělo automobilní nabíjené automaticky" (gun on truck loaded automatically)) is a wheeled self-propelled artillery piece. It is also known as the Samohybná Kanónová Húfnica vzor 77 (ShKH vz. 77) (self-propelled gun howitzer model 77); and was designed by Konštrukta Trenčín and built by ZTS Dubnica nad Váhom in the former Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). Introduced in the 1970s it was the first wheeled 152 mm self-propelled artillery gun to enter service. It is based on a modified 8x8 Tatra 813 chassis with excellent cross-country mobility. Currently it is in service with the Czech Republic, Libya, Poland, Georgia and Slovakia.
Wheeled vehicles have the advantage of being cheaper to build and easier to maintain with greater mobility. Tire pressure can be regulated to allow good mobility off-road and there is power-assisted steering on the front four wheels. It lowers 3 hydraulic stabilizers into the ground prior to firing, and has a roof mounted crane to assist with ammunition loading.
The crew of the DANA consists of the driver (operates the hydraulic stabilizers) and commander sitting in the front cabin, the gunner (aims the gun and opens fire) and loader operator (selects the appropriate amount of powder charges) are on the left side of the turret, the ammo handler (sets the shells' primers) is on the right side turret.
DANA-M1 CZ is a modernised version of vz. 77 DANA (Delo Automobilní Nabíjené Automaticky) 152mm self-propelled wheeled howitzer developed by Excalibur Army to provide effective artillery support for the Czech Army.
Hope you enjoy!

People often forget the ENORMOUS weapon-producing traditions that the former Checholsovakia had - manufacturers like Tatra or Skoda were not the BIGGEST tank /SPG producers, but always produced extremely versatile and good quality armour. Let's not forget that without the Czech 35(t) and 38(t) tanks Hitler could have NEVER invaded France - he JUST DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TANKS to do it. Entire "Panzerdivisionen" (notably the 7th - as fr as I remember under Rommel's command) were built upon Czech tanks and trucks. These vehicles not only speared "Barbarossa" in 1941 but served up until the end of the IIndWW as SPG - the most notable of them was the "Hetzer" - a little "puppy for German standards of 1943/'44, but easy to conceal and with a MASSIVE punch - a deadly vehicle for the incoming waves of "Shermans" and T-34's. Skoda was also a manufacturer of many scout vehicles. ...and so it remained during the commie regime years - Skoda was turned to produce mainly civil vehicles, because the USSR and the "Warsaw Pact" wanted to have its military production concentrated in Russian "hands", but it it gradually changing back again... Now! - the "Dana" is a very efficient and reliabl system once upgraded to "NATO-standards" especially with it's electronic equipment for targeting, fire-control, communications and (obviously) the capability to shoot all the array of modern NATO "ammo-stock"...

@@kloschuessel773 If you look around in the world, you will see that everywhere the tracked artillery is slowly replaced by wheeled artillery. For IFV's the same movement is discernsble, even Israel has chosen to produce a 8x8 wheeled product. Why? Well, cheaper, faster, uses mostly truck components and engines, etc. Are they better? Time will tell, but it is rather surprising to see a 120mm tank cannon on a wheeled vehicle. Maybe the end of the MBT is near?

I worked for the Australian Tatra Agent some years ago. He was keen to offer these to the Australian Army in 155mm. The factory Demo videos were astounding. The 8x8 truck is vastly more capable than this video shows or the comments by Matsimus (sorry). I think the engine output must be wrong, as the Tatra air cooled V8 in the Tatra 815 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles puts out 700hp, so a similar V12 should output more like 700hp plus and in excess of 1000 NM of torque. As an ex-Gunner, this vehicle is a brilliant solution for mobile Artillery, much more beneficial than a tracker SPG.
@Pyrochemik007
@Pyrochemik007 Год назад
I bet the engine is 330 kW, not 330 hp. You may like the new MORANA artillery. Nowadays also NEXTER is using tatra chassis for Cesar II artillery. But that one requires crew to exit wen shooting. Morana needs only 3 people, and they stay inside cabin. Edit: 3 people
@dianapennepacker6854
@dianapennepacker6854 Год назад
@@Pyrochemik007 Wonder how long it takes to shoot and scoot. It doesn't matter the format but I feel like that is what the future holds since counter artillery is only getting better. Unless you have a significant range advantage I don't see how a more static defense is viable. Towed artillery seem so vulnerable to set up, fire, and relocate. It is so easy to scout with drones, aircraft, and now we have radar and computers that can pin point the location of your location. I forsee artillery firing a few rounds for a few minutes then booking it to some predetermined location. Better when coordinated with others spread out over a few KM.
@Pyrochemik007
@Pyrochemik007 Год назад
@@dianapennepacker6854 6 shots in first minute, and it has MRSI, which means several shots are shot at different angles, but hit enemy at the same time. It can start shooting 40 seconds after stopping. I bet moving will be shorter, because you do not need to wait until the hydraulic arms stabilise the vehicle. Since the vehicle aims everything on it´s own, you do not need to act as a group of howitzers, each one can shoot from different location. That makes it that much harder for enemy to spot them. The vehicle is literaly designed around what you wrote, shoot and scoot. Carries 45 rounds of ammo, so it can eliminate 10 targets with simultaneuos 4 grenades, before resuplying.

I agree on the engine, what surprised me more about it than the horse power was that it was air cooled. Of course that may have a part in its low hp out put, and probably affects this vehicle in extremely hot and extremely cold weather. Something I'd be interested in seeing is the torque ratings, as that figure may explain a bit more about some engines. Great video!

A little explanation with the engine, while it does have relatively low horsepower rating 308-436 it has some monster torque numbers with the low being 1,000 ftlbs and the high of 1500 ftlbs. This power is made at a super low 1000 to 1200 rpm, meaning at just above idle it has all the power they need. I would assume this engine is governed for very low rpm for reasons of reliability and heat, these large v12 tatra engines are still air-cooled.

Cool! Thank you again for this interesting content! One of the few vehicles I ever saw personally. I live right next to Poland *and* Czech Republic and the Czech forces had showcased it on an event in the next city. It's the same with all volunteer forces - they have to do advertising and like to show the more impressive pieces to influence teenagers (it's absolutely fine to go to the military but this certain kind of funland adventure advertising on minors is rather nasty). Anyways - it's beautiful and huge! It somehow looks like a WW2 Maginot line bunker on wheels. But on the engine: I thought you were going to ignore the matter completely until you mentioned it in the end. 300-something horsepowers sounds pretty low for a metal bunker on wheels right? And since you mentioned it: Tatra engines are not known for being fuel efficient. They are known for working fine with -30 degrees or +40° but not exactly as precise high tech machinery. A military tech enthusiast in my hometown operates a heavy Tatra truck (the same chassis was used as missile launcher vehicle and such) with yet another Tatra tank engine powering a super heavy duty snow blower and sometimes when it snows *a lot* in winter he helps to clear the roads into the mountains and such. It's almost impossible to operate as privateer due to the fuel consumption. It's around 300l/100km for just "lightweight" truck with a pretty limp engine. I wonder how awesome this gun could become with yet another modernization consisting of some cutting edge MTU (and similar) engine with a lot more power for the same fuel guzzling and the usual high tech fire control and targeting systems! As you mentioned in your previous SPA videos these systems are in a phase of transition and might not work anymore like they did for decades. For this kind of changes the wheeled one is superior but it can't play it's cards of extreme mobility and speed due to the "weak" engine. Obviously it can go places but it could be a little beefier.

While serving in the Bundeswehr (1993/94) we were using the FH70 in combination with a 7.5t MAN truck because the plan back then was to have a highly mobile artillery unit being part of the French-German-Brigade, that the alternative at that time (M109) couldn't achieve. Some years later the FH70s were replaced by the PzH2000.

When them soldiers opened the ammo crates in "drill team" fashion i laughed so hard. Could you imagine getting yelled at and having to do push ups cause you kept screwing up "rehearsal". Not combat real deal situation stuff but synchronized crate opening. Soldiering ain't never been easy.

It makes sense, though. They want your movements to be automatic when in combat. By treating it as a drill, the young guys will take it more seriously and try their best.

With regard to the low horsepower output of the TATRA V12 engine, it is a low revving, long stroke design which gives it a very respectable torque curve. This has some advantages in maintaining engine speed under varying terrain loads due to its massive flywheel inertia. On the minus side, it produces a greater load on the gearbox.

Couple things I would like to say. 1. Do not worry about your czech pronunciation. It is hard and google will almost never help you. :D 2. The reason for the turret not beeing able to make 360° is simple. The truck would simply flip itself if the gun would be fired perpendicular to the chassis. 3. the system was surprisingly good for its age. In 21st century not so much. Of course nowadays there are modernisation plans for it. But no one wants to put any money into army so we are at a stalemate. Good video :) keep up the good work.

Nice video, fair and without stupid competitive hate. Don't worry about pronounciation, it's very hard and special language :) Just one tip, I wouldn't call it soviet vehicle, I know there was this stupid wall and stuff, but Czechoslovakia was never part of USSR, we were controled by their tyrrany for 40 years and even occupied by joint forces of so called Warshau pact. So we are a bit itchy when you say soviet :) Unfortunatelly even Tatra was set back a big time by soviets, if it wasn't for them, they would be prolly one of the really big players in truck production at least in Europe. Their engines and offroad trucks in general were quite amazing. I have seen even working prototypes of their smaller offroad military cars. Oh my, that things were just amazing, nothing from Russia in that time would compete with them (and let me tell you, they knew how to build offroad cars in USSR) production was forbidden for... reasons. Thanks for the video about this overgrown beauty, it's just one of these vehicles that looks so cute you would hug them (shame that they are made for completely different business).

DANA is still one of the best self-propelled guns today ... Since you introduced a lot of self-propelled guns on a truck, wheeled basis, which are among the best today. It could present, the Serbian version .NORA B52 155mm. Which is also at the very top of the range of today's self-propelled Howitzer.

Classic bit of Czech engineering, simple, well made and does the job. Sadly in the UK the gold plated must do anything of our procurement will always mean we will end up with a handful of state of the art kit. May be now things are going to focus on a European defence requirement to fend off Putin we will see us select equipment for the UK that will recognise a need for volume in both troops and equipment as well as out and out quality. The other thing is that the UK could not buy this kit, because its air cooled engine is not Euro 6 compliant, although I think Tatra is part of Paccar group now so could come with a Daf Euro 6 engine instead.

Hohoho stop it. I am from Slovakia, turret with main gun is from Slovakia, it was developed and manufactured in Slovakia. Only the truck is made by Tatra, cczech company. That is big difference. You can put Slovak turret on anything you want. After dissolution of Czechoslovakia it is the same. Now slovak engineers deleloped Zuzana 155 howitzer, Zuzana 2 155 howiterz and Eva 155 howitzer, and now our engineers are working for howitzer for all European conuntries in program called PESCO, hopefully it wil be successful project.

@Graham Ariss One of my many gripes about our UK Government, irrespective of which ever party, is since the Minister for Procurement for the MoD frequiently has little to no military experience, let alone combat experience, our track record of buying the right equipment, at the right price, in a timely manner, has been ... what's the correct adjective ...? Oh yes ... a total dog's breakfast ... Take the Eurofighter Typhoon. Granted, its may well be a great Interceptor/Air Superiority fast jet, but, in my very unexpert opinion, by the time the Typhoon eventually entered into service, it was at least, iirc, a decade late, and, at minimum, one generation behind both the latest MiG and SU. As soon as the delays began to happen, the MoD should have pulled out asap. But, the again hindsight is 20/15* ... I would love to see the Dana deployed alongside the infantry, along with the Wiesel, with the main reason being its 'shoot and scoot' capability. Personally, there is alot to be said for maintaining that fine balance between being highly mobile, but yet still able to put a heck of alot of firepower down range. This is especially true, as the conflicts that the, say, British Army has been involved in of late (cf. Afghanistan), means dealing with a highly mobile, but still relativly decently equipped, opposition. After all, despite everything the Russian army threw at them, short of battlefield nuclear weapons, they could unseat, let alone come even remotely close to routing, the Afghan-Islamist fighters (the mujahideen). Instead, the Russian army often found themselves frequently beaten back, due to the use of guerrilla warfare, despite the Soviets not only having the numerical advantage, but also in terms of weaponry and sheer firepower. One can argue that to the Soviets of the 80's, Afghanistan was to them what Vietnam was to the Americans, in that they were forced to pull out entirely due to the enemy having arguably much clearer and better strategy and tactics. I am pretty sure Sun Tzu mentions that one should never fight an enemy on their territory, as it makes it easier for them to set the 'terms' of any battles. Bearing this in mind, the Army needs to think of mobility, such as the Wiesel, and, once upon a time, the Scorpion. Personally, I would love to see the former introduced, and the latter brought back into service with major, but fit for purpose, upgrades. But that may be too sensible, and thus unlikely to happen ... [*= ok, I expect to be flammed for this, but instead of both the Typhoon and the F35, I would have spent that money on:- a) Upgrading the Tornado to F4/5. b) Upgrading the Harrier to AV-9a/b. c) Buy the SAAB JAS Gripen, but ask for a slightly bigger airframe to allow for twin engines, along with the existing twin cockpit variant (call it the Gripen G). d) Buy the A-10 Thunderbolt II, but in the twin cockpit, all-weather, version that was once trialled. c) This will definitly raise some hackles, but I would argue for also adding a few AC-130; keep the 105mm M102 howitzer, but upgrade the L/60 Bofors Cannon to 50mm, and add 2 x 25mm GAU-12/U Equalizer. d) And last but no means least ... Ever since the retirement of the 'V-Force', the RAF has lacked long rang, strategic deep strike, bombing capability and capacity it once had with it. Granted, the Tornado F3 has filled in some of that gap admirably, but still pales against the likes of the B1-b, the B2, and, of course, the venerable B52. Hence, my idea would be to dust off the plans for the TSR-2, and call it the TSR-4. Of course everything besides the airframe (and possibly that too ...) will have to be updated, but since the draw-down of the F111, it would be nice to have an aircraft that fills in the niche it once occupied, and in fact, which was chosen over the TSR-2 ...]

Trying to read czech like it was english with russian accent = Crazy mixture of sounds without any meaning. Czech pronunciation is simple (except some tricky sounds), each letter is one sound and we read same way as we write with little exceptions. So no need for spelling contests. Letters with special symbols are just sounds that are made by group of letters in other languages. Č = CZ, Š = Sh, or long variants Á = aa.
