@@VanDamArtisan Hi im from india i run a dance school here in chennai , my studio is in the second floor and its located in a residential area .. the problem now when more than 4 or 5 people the jumping sound so disturbing in the first floor and groundfloor does this method arrest the sound completely .

Not completely but it will certainly help. I'd recommend insulating beneath the subfloor also if noise is a concern.

@@abbysdiaryofficial I did some looking into soundproofing a few years ago for a friend's band practice space. Everything I read said that for soundproofing floors, it's much, much more effective to hang soundproofing on the ceiling below, rather than trying to lay it on the floor above. Soundproofing is all about decoupling the surfaces so the sound vibrations don't propagate through them. Soundproofing on top of the floor has to work against gravity trying to press the two layers together, making vibrations propagate more effectively from one to the other. Hanging soundproofing below the floor (on the ceiling of the floor below) gets to work *with* gravity, pulling the two layers apart and making it harder for vibrations to cross the gap between them. You *may* also get some advantage by filling any gaps between the joists in the floors, so the empty spaces don't act as resonators. But that should be in addition to the other measures. Also, if you do put in a sprung floor, try to figure out a way to anchor the sprung floor that does not connect to the walls. If you connect to the walls, they will will carry vibrations down to the lower floors. I have a house with a set of stairs that has a wall connected to the stair stringer. It makes footsteps going up and down the stairs carry very well.

I see two levels of 2x4s with support pads under the intersection of each 2x4. That is incorrect design. The support pads should be half way between the intersections. The method used renders the top level of 2x4s totally pointless ( other than raising the height of the floor and raising the cost of the build ) The dynamics of the floor with only one level of parallel 2x4s is identical to what the dynamics of the floor would be if two levels of 2x4s are used with the support pad at the intersection. When you move the support pads half way between the intersections you get a new dynamic with two major benefits; less floor stiffness and more uniform flex throughout the floor area. WIth the incorrect design when you fall at an intersection you only get the cushioning deflection distance of the support pad. With the proper design, when you fall at an intersection you get the cushioning deflection distance of the beam deflection plus the deflection distance of the support pads.

I wonder about a few things, and how well this is holding up after a year or so of dancing? I noticed you didn’t stagger your 2x4 butt edges, nor did you stagger your t&g butt edges. I’m sure you know, being a contractor, that staggering your butts “locks” everything together, with no railroaded seams that are for the most part, individual panels inside of a whole floor, with the possibility of extreme movement and separation, especially with dancers moving on it daily. Staggering butt edges locks the whole floor together, so the whole floor moves as one piece. Otherwise, I think you did an amazing job! Except for using nails on your base stinger 2x4...nails work loose, screws don’t tend to. I will be using your pattern when we build our floor, with the general fixes I’ve stated previously. Good job guys!
@VanDamArtisan
@VanDamArtisan 5 лет назад
We did in fact stagger the tongue and groove osb and where we used nails we also used screws because nails have a much better shear strength than screws. Thanks for watching.

VanDam Creations got it. I apologize, I guess it’s hard to see with the angle of the camera, and in fast motion it’s harder to pick these things up. I think you did an awesome job, and I plan on using this design when I redo our dance studio. Take care!

How thick are the foam pieces under the 2x4’s? Can I use pool noodles cut to this thickness? Can I use 1 x 4’s instead? Making a room on concrete 15 x 25.
@VanDamArtisan
@VanDamArtisan 4 года назад
I would definitely recommend pool noodles, just be consistent with the cuts. There's no reason you couldn't use 1x4's instead of 2x4's, it'll just have more flex.

Great job! Do you run into any problems from not gluing the Marley to the floor, and just taping them together? We use Roscoe vinyl, which is similar, but we have glued it in the past, we moved, and that vinyl is lost. But I'm afraid if we don't glue it down, it will start shifting down the road.

Off camera we actually pinned down two sides perpendicular to another. My main concern was aclamation and expansion, but there were no issues, mostly because the flooring was fairly heavy and didn't flex it expand much.

Mostly to minimize the height but that's not a bad idea. It would give more spring to the floor.

1. What type of glue or caulk did you use? 2. What did you do for the border of the room around the floor?
@VanDamArtisan
@VanDamArtisan 7 лет назад
+Kellen Storer I used regular construction adhesive between every board intersection and beneath the OSB. Around the perimeter I used a pressure treated 2x4 tipped on end so it stands 3 1/2" tall. This board is on the ground, not on pads and is secured to the wall. If it flexes against the wall it will squeak.

What kind of Harlequin did you use? I see it's Marley, but there are different kinds. For example I am looking at "Cascade". Is the floor you installed here permanent or portable? For the ones I'm looking at they offer it in both. How long did it take the two of you to put this together? How expensive were the materials for the subfloor/everything underneath the actual Harlequin Marley floor?
@VanDamArtisan
@VanDamArtisan 6 лет назад
+Dance Dayz Studio the Marley was the portable kind but we installed it in a semi permanent way. It took us about 3 days, 1 to frame the bulk, 1 for ramps and misc framing and we cleaned and rolled out the floor in a couple hours on the last day. I believe the framing materials were around $2500 for about 1500 ft² and the school purchased the Marley so I'm not sure what the cost was. Hope this helps!

If you're using a hardwood top layer, I had read that you can put some type of paper between the upper ply and hardwood layers to reduce the potential of squeaking. Do you know if this is required, and what the paper and grade is called?

This is very helpful. Thanks so much! You mentioned that off camera you pinned down two sides perpendicular to another when asked about gluing the rubber flooring to the sub floor. Can you explain further? Did you add glue on the underside of the rubber flooring so it doesn't shift on the sub floor? Also, I notice you used seam tape rather than glue or heat seam. Is that holding up well in the dance studio or would you recommend using heat seal for the seams? Thank you!
@VanDamArtisan
@VanDamArtisan 5 лет назад
I left two sides floating to allow for expansion and contraction in case the flooring needed to acclimate. We haven't had a problem with the flooring moving, despite not using glue anywhere. The seem tape holds up well but something more permanent would be better. In this case, they wanted the flooring easy to remove so it could be upgraded later and be used for mobile purposes.
