If I were to sum it up in a few words, Seventeen's "Thanks" was like watching a drama.
Let me know what you want me to watch! Or better yet, suggest another type of content I should make that could help you learn more about dance! Whether you're an aspiring dancer, training to be a K-Pop idol, or just want to appreciate the art of dance-
I want to share my knowledge with YOU.
Hope ya'll enjoy this video!
Quick about me:
My real name is Tad, but DonKawaii/Don was simply an IGN name I created playing FF14 online, so I kinda just rolled with it. Lol. I am also a teacher, and I teach people dance. And normally, I teach my students dance through sharing my own choreography, giving people drills or exercises to build foundation and technique. and I've been dancing for 15 years mainly growing up through Hip Hop dance culture, but my foundation also includes minor areas in ballet, jazz, and tap. And how I got into K-Pop was because the main three groups, Wonder Girls, Big Bang, and SNSD. That followed with korean dramas, variety shows, and the rest is history.

This song can be considered as a Fan Song, in which they wrote the song while thinking about Carats. The lyrics of the song included how much they couldn't think of a word that may give justice for the extent of gratitude they have, and was left to simply say Thank you. They have incorporated the korean sign language of "Thank You" which was the tap that you have noticed. The placement of the members are seen as T.H.X from a higher camera angle.
@DonKawaii1
@DonKawaii1 3 года назад
Mmmm, I didn't realize the T.H.X. moment thanks for that! And to the others mentioning the same thing. But man, a lot of detail embedded within this set where I'm continuously finding new things. That's freaking cool!

The ripple effect at 18:13 spells out T H X when seen from a more aerial view (e.g. from nosebleed seats at concerts), you can see it better from fancams than the regular front angles Another fun fact is that they use a bit of Korean sign language here; in the prechorus when they tap their hand over their opposite arm, it means “thank you” and at 25:48 when they link their pinkies on top of each other it means “promise”. These additions really gives the feeling that they want to convey gratitude to as many of their fans as they can :’)

I always say Seventeen don't just hit different because of their synchronicity, they speak through their choreo, movement, and performance quality. It's something you can't teach and I think that's what sets them apart.

i skimmed the comments and saw that others already pointed out the sign language used as well as THX being spelled out from an aerial view, but i don't think anyone's talked about the "pinky promise" which you kind of noticed! they actually use the pinky promise gesture i think a few times in this choreo, most notably in their ending formation/pose. it's also worth noting that the pinky is the finger that seventeen wears their group rings on. their group rings were given to them before they debuted, but after they were selected for the final lineup. they get new rings every time they release a full album. since seventeen went through a rough training period, with many trainees coming and going and being told they might debut for nearly two years straight, the rings are a mark that they made it and became an official member of the group. it's also sort of like a physical reminder of the bond between the members. you pretty much never see any of them without it. as this is a song thanking carats, the promise gesture symbolizes the promises seventeen have made to carats, and also to each other. it's not necessarily one specific promise, but various promises that they'll work hard, that they'll be together for a long time, that they'll do their best to make carats proud, etc. i think it's especially symbolic for them to do the gesture at the end of the choreo, because the whole song is "thank you for everything" and then ending it on "here's our promise for the future" even though thanks isn't my favorite SVT title track, it is the most meaningful to me and to a lot of carats because of the message. when he's asked about creating music, woozi often brings up the importance of sincerity and i think thanks is one of the songs that captures that best

the pinky gesture is actually the korean sign language for promise! they have also used the ksl for thank you in 9:48 :) a lot of svts choreographies incorporated sign language like in clap (where they wave their hands in the air while saying baksu, so people with hard of hearing can know when to clap together), pretty u (jeonghans neo yeppeuda gesture), snapshoot (chorus choreo), etc

Ok so first Im gonna talk about the song: basically about carats and saying thanks to carats, very touching if ya read the lyrics 🥰 breakdown some scenes: - the vocal unit gathering at the cafe/dinner , sitting in circle at 1 table, all having notes and pens: discussing and writing lyrics for songs (though outside the facility they would still take their time to brainstorm lyrics/ideas for songs/albums, even now units or the whole svt still always gathers to discuss all kind of things relate to their works at meeting room, Wonwoo said in the recent interview that normally they would have 4-5 meetings/day between members to discuss the work of the album, songs, concepts,....) - the scene in studio with the 4 of hiphop unit: recording and making their raps (every rap songs or rap verses in a SVT song are all written by the rap unit with Woozi's approval 👍) - the scene in practice room with performance unit making their own or adding adjustments to the choreography along the whole team ➡️ the whole mv was all about their daily works, showcasing how they put their hearts and souls into their works for carats and the gratefulness toward carats ❤️ Secondly the choreography: 17:21 when I learned the song is about their thanks to carats, I kinda see this like carats lifting him up to reach for the top 18:13 the ‘weird ripples’ was actually formed the T, H, X if ya look at the formation from above or a little higher than the straight forward direction - there is a part with the sign language 'thanks' but I just can’t remember where in the choreography thanks to my gold fish brain 25:48, 27:33 both pinkies interlocking means ‘promise’ ( promise always be together svt and carats ) 💎

THANKS is about relaying the gratitude to someone (carats) for always supporting them, which is why the mv locations are places they go to when working on the content they put out, like a "behind the scenes" of their schedules. actually, during the mv filming, the choreography wasnt finalized yet, so you may see some moves have changed from the mv to the official choreo. the choreography itself includes a lot of ways to relay the thankful feeling such as the use of "thank you" in korean sign language (9:48) which are the taps you mentioned, the bow you make at the end of a show to thank viewers (10:00), and the linking of pinkies, meaning "promise" (10:08, 11:28, 12:13). the rise&fall formation in (9:48) actually spells out "T H X" from above, which they mentioned was for the viewers who were far away from the stage during performances, they hoped that even from that distance they could relay their message through choreography too. when seventeen does a concept, they WILL deliver that concept. 💎💕

The diner scene was probably cause they would sometimes write songs in places like these. I remember watching a behind of the scenes, sort of, about svt and it was the hiphop team writing their lyrics while in a similar place, not exactly a diner but they were writing while eating.

You are also right to say that this piece has a lot of drama.. the whole message of the song is about seventeen being grateful to fans for their love and support for the past few years.. the chorus you hear is the work thanks in Korean.. then expressing so much gratitude for all the love and support.. I think that’s why I appreciate this piece more than the other performances of seventeen because the story within the performance is so sincere.. you just watch and feel the passion they have… they even performed this in award shows.. there was 1 award show where they did a criss-cross dance break for this song and it’s amazing!! You should watch it..

I absolutely love the part at 22:02! The lyrics go like “I tried to find a better word than ‘thanks’ but in the end I couldn’t thank you” and the way they symbolize it is really beautiful, with Jun and Hoshi trying to pick flowers but when they get close it just slips out of their grasp at the last second

The taps in the ripple effect is the sign language for thank you.. that’s where the idea came from. This is the perfect example of seventeen incorporating sign language in dancing

Additional Info btw, the scenes you can see in the M/V contains from their everyday lives like the Recording Studio, Practice Room and the bus. Regarding with the Diner, I think that even outside their working place, they still use the time to brainstorm and give out their ideas even though it is the place where they should relax and Eat. You can see the Vocal Unit is kinda discussing something in the Diner and Jun's solo dance segment shows his soul of dancing that deliberately wants to prove himself on stage even when he is eating at a restaurant.

During the “gomapda” x3 part with the taps is sign language for thx & they spell out THX in the formation from above . They did this for concerts so people that have an above view can see it. I believe they use 2-3 forms of sign language to say thanks & the holding of the pinkies is to show a promise that they will never change & never take us for granted like the lyrics say. Essentially the lyrics are saying just saying thanks is not enough & they don’t know how to express how thankful they actually are so they try to show it with their bodies.

@@julieanndelacruz9072 From what I've read in the past, he's actually well respected in the dance community and went to a very good dance school. He also was BoA's manager and I believe played a hand in putting together and training Shinee (he used to work for SM). His skills in running a company and managing said company? Yeah....there's work to be done on that 😅. But he does know a thing or two when it comes to dance. If there's anything that Pledis has done right, it's whatever their training system is, especially when it comes to dance. That's why Pledis idols or idols trained by Pledis (IZ*ONE and Fromis_9 were trained by Pledis) have insane dance skills and very good synchronization.

Thanks is a fan song, expressing their gratitude for Carats and how, after trying to find many ways and fancy words to express it, they realized that a simple but heartfelt "thank you" was the best. The MV is an idealized bts of how they make their songs (they often write lyrics in cafes or diners) and prepare for their performances, right up until they go on stage where they feel all the love and support from the fans and try to repay it by delivering a great performance. There's also an interesting nuance in the korean title : the most common way to say "thank you" in korean is "gomawo" not "gomapda". "gomapda" is very informal and only used between close friends and family while "gomawo" can be used for any level of relationship. Seventeen choosing to use "gomapda" here shows that they think of their fans as very close and intimate to them.

The taps is a sign language and its mean thank you. The performance team choreograph it because this is still the era when they didnt have dance team to help them and they specially add two sign language in the choreo that is the tap one and the on that look like promise sign. Seventeen wants to thanks carat for the support sincerely and seungkwan even learn how to speak sign language so that he can communicate with them better. Thanks is a precious song for carats and i think you will feel more emotional when you check the dance again because you know more about the choreo.

SVT often leave a lot of their songs to the fans to interpret on their own. Thanks is one of those were they directly stated that it’s a song meant for their fans. As many had pointed out, the hand gestures, the tapping, they did on their hand was a form of sign language for thanks. The movement where some members stand up in groups of three is to form THX, to say thanks. I’m not surprise that you didn’t catch that b/c many of us didn’t either. 😅 if you are watching them in person from a higher level seating, you’ll be able to see them forming that. I think it’s a pretty cool way to send that message of thankfulness to the fans who are present and especially to fans who are far away watching them. What I love about the MV is that, unlike many MV they did where the setting looked very staged to look a certain way, Thanks was set up to have this very natural setting. The members were shown doing their every day activity as idols, especially self producing idols. B/c SVT are self producing idols, they never really have a “break” or they never have a moment where they “stop thinking about music and performances”. As they mention many times before, when asked in interviews what are their inspirations, they will often respond with “we take inspirations from our every day life”. Although the restaurant scene looked very out of place I feel like it represent SVT as self producing idols a lot. No matter if they’re inside the studio or on the way to their next schedule, or eating, SVT never stops finding creative ways to express themselves or find ideas for their next song. For ex: HHU song Chili is a play on the word Chili (sauce) and chilly (cold) or how Hoshi once taught the members the choreo to shinning Diamond by telling them, “do this, like you’re picking up a napkin”. Thanks really holds a special place for me b/c it’s one of the songs where I feel like it’s more than just getting the moves right but also, getting the emotions right. SVT is always United and synchronized on stage but Thanks really shows me that it’s not just their hands and feet that are synchronized but their goals, dreams, and the message that they wished to tell the fans is also the same - “Thank you”. It does feel like a drama b/c everything about Thanks is sincere and honest as it’s what they wanted to say to the fans. It’s not the “playful” SVT, that we often saw, on here, but rather the honest, sincere SVT. Thank you for your reaction.

this mv actually has meaning like behind scene about how they produce the song and choreo as a whole.. because they know as self producing artist... that why there's studio, dance room... and when they running through the door meaning they ready to perform... this has connection from "clap", when in mv they making their own music video, svt as a staff. for diner part, they usually making lyrics while eating , that why there's woozi with his textbook there... there's actually a song called "chilli", this song born because vernon saw chilli sauce and decide to make that lol (i forgot the detail).

THANKS choreo is one of my top fave SVT choreos (if not the first). It was so graceful and emotional. The song itself was very meaningful and the choreo made it even more special. You felt it's dramatic cos there's a kind of 'desparation' and intense tone on this choreo. If you'd see the lyrics, it was speaking of wanting to express so much to a special someone but not able to find any fitting word so they just say 'thank you'. And of course there's a serious promise that they won't let go. The others may have already commented on the sign languages and other formations here, esp the thank you and promise sign language. Lastly, I just want to say is whenever they perform this on concert stage, it's stunningly beautiful.

Ah ! One thing I forgot to mention in my other comment, this was choreographed by Hoshi and the Look crew this time, not Choi Young Jun. This was their first time working together I believe (they'll collab on a few other songs after this) but it still has a very Seventeen feel to it because Hoshi was involved and the usual choreographing process (working intimately along with the modifications of the song) was followed.

Actually, this song is dedicated for carats as the title is "thanks" they wanna thanked carats who always be by their side and assured those who are leaving the fandom that they're not gonna change. There are many sign language like for the prechorus (where they tap their arms) it's a ksl (korean sign language) for "thank you" with a lil bit of modification. Also there should be a formation "thx" during the prechorus choreo that I mentioned before. It's a shame that there's no aerial cam shooting during their live stage performance but overall I guess their message conveyed well to all carats ❤

Of all of Seventeen's choreographies, "Thanks" is definitely one of my favorites. It's such a moving piece and it just makes you FEEL things when you watch it. I think I just like this type of choreography for Seventeen where they mix a bit of contemporary (or just really elegant flowy types of moves) with their usual harder hitting dances. Lol I'm sure as a 13 membered group, the boys are probably used to dancing in cramped areas and small stages. Though I can't help but wonder how often they must've accidentally hit each other being this close xD

I think it has become an inside info too in caratland. Woozi is one of the skilled dancers of SEVENTEEN (he and hoshi were like the "dance coaches" of the group during their training period). But, Woozi always has a walk from center back to center front moment in their choreos. In one of their variety show guestings, Woozi did a freestyle dance and even the members were saying that that was a rare moment and they missed seeing Woozi go off like that.

As for the second chorus, the one you stated that has a tighter formation and energy, the center of it was Minghao/The8 who was in hiatus prior to the Thanks promotion due to health issues. I just want to share how seeing that really made Carats emotional, and I agree that the formation alone gives more emotion, and adding that context of minghao being the center during that part made it more emotional. So glad I've watched this reaction/dance analysis to seventeen. Looking forward for more! Thank you and Stay safe! 😊

Their first (and last) song is Just do it. They first performed this on a fanmeeting before releasing it as a single. this is all just my opinion but i feel like 'thanks' is supposed to be very focused on its choreography. down to the song itself, they mention how it's really hard to put into words exactly how immensely grateful to their fans, to the point where they settle for a simple 'thanks' instead of even a 'thank you'. they know it's not about the words anymore and that the only way they can express themselves more truly is through the songs composed personally for carats, through the choreography that they've spent hours creating and perfecting until they're ready to show it to us. the small gestures that other people have already pointed out in the sign language and formations is them paying attention and care to every last detail that they can

Yes ..that was a pinky promise... They start with it...they end with it. Fun fact, only SVT has a pinky ring since debut that symbolizes they're SVT. And they've said that none of the members EVER take off their rings.... 🥰

18:08 ripple actually spells T - H - X (from the top view) and the hand gesture they make during that part is the sign language of "thank you" in korea!

In their Thanks MV, SVT basically said, "We're self-producing idols." In their choreo vid, they basically said, "Yes, we're awesome. And carats make us shine."

The arm taps is a creative take on the hand sign for "thanks".... And they also form T-H-X from the top, so that CARATs who are watching them in arenas and looking down on them can see the msg they are trying to convey... :) They mention this in an interview.... And their choreographer mentioned how they incorporated this because Hoshi was always thinking of ways to connect their choreo to carats....

The 10:53 part, it's a sign language for thank you and also their formation when they rise and fall spells out T H X , they wanted to express gratitude to those fans who can't see them up close in concerts

Btw, this is just a personal opinion, but i interpretate the moment that they lifted seungkwan up as they show/saying that the position they have or the achievement they get as a succesful idol group is not something they get/achieve only by their own, but also because of the help and support from many people such as their parents, the choaces, the staff, carat, and many others, and they feel thankful for that support (don't get me wrong, i know Seventeen really practice and working hard to be a successful group, i'm not saying that they don't, but since it is a song for saying 'thaks', that just how i saw it)
