Trying to block a punch this way would require intercepting it at precisely the right moment and making contact in precisely the right spot. That would be like trying to hit a bullet with another bullet. It is neary impossible to pull off. That is why you never see moves like this in real fights.

1) A large amount of martial arts techniques are stylized (the only one without that that I can think of atm is krav) and the most important thing is to build the muscle memory and the concept of the technique. "It is like a finger pointing to the moon. Focus on the finger and you miss all that heavenly glory." 2) This is why you practice. A lot. With practice you can start automatically figuring out the distancing, speed, gravity, open targets, angles etc. 3) Kenpo is short range. Hopefully if the assailant is within arms reach, you're keeping a damn close eye on them and are ready to react when they punch.

@Robin Stiff Kenpo VS the average male who isn't trained = Kenpo wins. There's this misconception that every "Street fighter" is some badass ninja with superhuman strength. Many street fighters are barely trained, out of shape, drugged up or drunk, or idiots who think they're badass because they're in great physical shape. I would imagine that most medium to high level Kenpo martial artists would beat your average street fighter more than 90% of the time.

@@jaynenunya6070 if the "muscle memory" is embedded in a wrong move than better not to build muscle memory

Lol. Anyone who disagrees with you is the same guy that would say “mma isn’t good for self defense because it’s in a ring and there are rules” 😭😭😅😅

You take a pretty simple technique, and turn it into real martial art. Very informative. Thanks so much. I hope these videos pay off for you. May I suggest putting your school name in the description, with a link to your school website?

I have to question blocking at the elbow or higher. If I did that, the punch would already have hit me. Second, I assume this is a self-defense move. What if the attacker throws an overhand or right hook, which I feel is more likely?

You don’t have to worry about anything because no one is going to attack you like that.

Why did he lift the leg so that you could catch it?

Actually, if he did an ankle pick it would be reasonable, but I get what you are saying.

The thing that’s hilarious about these techniques and that I’ll never understand is he’s basing the entire technique on “intercepting” and using someone else’s punch to glance off of and attack with. Punches come from allll different angles, especially if the person is untrained, and they RETRACT IMMEDIATELY! PEOPLE DONT LEAVE PUNCHES EXTENDED. Christ.

Theoretical nonsense. You never know what’s going to happen in a real fight or how someone is going to react to anything.

I guess your style or all the other martial arts are gonna work at all the varying angles or whatever since this one is bull crap to you.
