This excerpt from the movie shows the ballerina’s talents as an actor as well as a dancer.
And it demonstrates Shearer’s versatility, here taking on a modern dance style.
The film revolves around a serial killer who murders women while using a portable film camera to record their dying expressions of terror.

One of the best scenes in horror history. More people need to see this film.

@@JohnRaymondHall There just aren't many horror films that look like this either! It's so '50s Technicolor, but in a way that really adds to the experience.

The Red Shoes died on release but somehow managed a year's season in New York. Powell wanted Shearer, Ninnette de Valour let her do it to keep Powell away from the Wells. Sol Hurock wanted to promote a Saddler's Wells season in New York but de Valour was adamant that the lead dancer was a young Margot Fonteyn

i guess the upshot was The Red Shoes was good publicity in the USA for tours by the company. and Fonteyn's performance on that first night in NY established her unquestionably as the star of the company

oh, Moira! he has General Casting killer written all over his face! wasn't the German accent in a British the-war-is-behind-us-but-not-THAT-far-behind-us postwar film red flag enough?

yes, exactly - impossible for Shearer not to have been alert to her danger all through - doesn't work dramatically at all - laughably implausible. Michael Powell of course also made The Red Shoes. Martin Scorsese is interesting about the film in this interview ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7GItFNbLVCs.html - not seeing what we are talking about as a problem

@@mariannestoffers5067 yes, she appeared in movies mostly in the 1950s but then in the following decade and later: 'Peeping Tom' in 1960, 'Black Tights' in 1961 and finally 'A Simple Man' in 1987

Such a classic scene! Dramatically, it may not hold up today, but there's a scene in Marks' original script between Mark and Viv setting up this one, which was cut from the final film. Amazing that you were Shearer's partner, what was that like, may I ask? Such a shame this film affected Powell and Boehm's careers so badly, but conversely it arguably spawned the slasher subgenre
