Movies forget married women kept hair under linen caps and never went outside without a hat or bonnet. Sometimes the extras on set look better than the lead cast. Ditto for a man with his linen showing and doublet unbuttoned. Never in public.
Love this film. Elizabethan court was full of Manners, observing them, men bowing elaborately, showing the calf of a muscular leg etc! It was all about a man courting a lady, poetry, music dancing. Elizabeth was very cultured before becoming Queen.
"La Volta was Queen Elizabeth's favorite dance in the 1500s, as referenced by Jasper Ridley's book Elizabeth I, The Shrewdness of Virtue (published 1989)."
exact movements, exaggerated gyrations for kids of the 90s..i am one and i know. these are arrogant and bouncy...gives a self centered aura. the other ones i see in movies are robotic because they are taken from books that have illustrations. i would think...looking at georgian early aryan dances and going as far as syria for levantine renditions....it would flow from step to step and a sense of modesty because a woman is close to a man in a public display of couple expression? it says they must have been pompous.
