Watching this video is not a waste of time at all. I so love how the documentary was presented. Everything is true. I even cried while watching this video. I love dancehall so much. I hope I can fly to Jamaica and learn from them. So much love and respect for all the people in Jamaica. Thank you for this video. I hope Jamaican people will be given a chance to show to the world how great and talented they are. Sending my love to them all the way from the Philippines to Jamaica.

Well, really love the documentary because the facts and the research was well put together. Yes, it was Bogle who made it possible and took dancing to another level and help pushed Dancehall Music all over the world. In fact, the women are the Queens and the men are the Kings of the Dancehall because at the end of the day everything is a business.

I’m an electronic musician from New Jersey in the states and just really learning about dancehall as the foundation of a lot that’s happening in the global dance culture so I this video has been extremely enlightening and I’m grateful to our fam in Jamaica for discovering this new economy of culture and community. Rarely is a cultural movement in the US so self aware as these cats on the vid. The understanding of making this music scene into a major Jamaican industry with many roles to play is an amazing start and I hope to see this knowledge spread to hopefully bring more profits into the island as the center of community dancehall scene who built a framework that many other cultures can replicate worldwide in especially struggling economies who can use the community and something more fun to produce income together. I suppose it’s about having the right people leading the vanguard and keeping this scene growing. * LOVED THIS DOC but only beef with This video is having so much western white girls bringing their feminist critique which will do nothing but make starving females and the girls from the island seem to be having a lot less of a problem with the culture of their own people. No one needs to here this first world liberal bullshit. We ALL need to do things we don’t exactly want to if we want to eat, white girls. You don’t want to shake your ass? I don’t want to learn 50 new types of software in a month and give up my sleep....but guess what? Life is NOT about what you want. That’s some privileged thinking that’s blind to real life. Like the boys talk about enduring the violence and bullshit bringing them down so maybe they can be more understanding of the culture as it is or if they wanna show concern for The sexual nature of female dancing it would be a shockingly open minded show of intellect and humanity to show concern for what the guys deal with if they wanna be empathetic to a foreign culture instead of just repeating the same old whining that they get away with in the “developed world”. Let’s love and respect what we get from Jamaica and dancehall and keep spreading the knowledge and reality but drive the communal aspect and philosophy that it takes a village to make an economy out of culture like This so try to restrain from taking too much of the pie and put profits back into the scene like any other business. The Jamaicans have the right idea clearly but need to add to selecta, toaster, dancer.....manager and accountant and web developer and they can all build a solid middle class for the whole towns if they keep the people on their minds and not just their selves. Everyone can feed their kids. This is a global export culture. Use Japan with anime as a model to understand what I’m saying maybe. I may be totally wrong but I think this is the roles needed to fullfill this beautiful dream of the poor becoming financially stable by Being one. Fuck communism, THIS is how the problems of capitalism can be flipped to work for the people! Someone in Jamaica please understand what I’m saying (if I’m right I don’t know but maybe u tried and I’m wrong) but I think this will help. A good organizer with the right skilled workers behind them is salvation for ur ppl. Best of luck and one love!

I understand what you're saying but like the Dutch girl said, the government & certain uptown people who hold positions of power, won't acknowledge Dancehall as a profitable part of our culture or even a part of our culture at all. A lot of them are ashamed of it and want to blame it as the cause of violence or the youth misbehaving while ignoring the real problems (because that would expose them as the real perpetrators of inequality & organized crime in the country). So in a sense, Dancehall is a scapegoat for them and it will take a lot to elevate it to a higher level where they won't be able to stifle it & the people who benefit from it.

I like what she said at 41:00, I think there should be insight on the dancers from other places that take the culture and appropriate it and the Jamaican dancers are left with nothing i.e. the girl who did the sorry video, anyone with sense could see that the dance moves are of Jamaican Dancehall origin, but she sat there and insist she created them and she wasn't influenced by anything...smh..I Hope this is cover in future episodes

This very good from the dancers point of view, and from their era, however There need to be a complete documentary from the initial stage from u roy, i-roy, dillinger, suger Minot, big yute etc. All I am seeing is snippets of various stages. Dancehall is a genre which is before hiphop. First dancehall song was in 1970 ,lot of people don't even know who coin the name dancehall. Dancehall is huge and long established.

I was just wondering, how safe is it for a white person to come to Jamaica and go to all those downtown parties to get the real experience, talk to people etc. What would be the attitude to a person like me being there?

I would love to know what questions the interviewer asked! I'm writing an essay about Dancehall and it would really help me!

Alright, so to me, it sounds very similar to reggaeton. Can the experts weigh in and explain the differences to me please?

Reggaeton was born out the Jamaican influence in Panama where early Dancehall songs were sung in Spanish back in the 80s. It's based on 5 Dancehall beats which the Pounder (Tumpa Tumpa/Dembow) and Rich Gyal Riddims are the most used today.
