For young people, in the late 50's and early 60's, Danceland was the place to go for live music and a superlative dance floor. Located on the second floor of the Clements building situated on the southeast corner of Robson and Hornby, Danceland was just two blocks west of Granville Street's theatre row.
Brian Croft, a former fighter pilot with the Canadian Forces, resides in Langley, B.C. He is a widely recognized artist whose work emanates from the beautiful locales surrounding Vancouver. He has introduced a historical and heritage perspective into his work which has become the focal element and trademark of his various collections. For more, go to www.briancroft.com

Wonderful overview of Danceland and Downtown Vancouver in the 60s. Your paintings look amazing. While I never expect things to remain the same over time, I have to say that this part of Downtown Vancouver has been totally ruined. The pride we once had in Vancouver, although in a few of our hearts, has become the false pride of so many who want Vancouver to become "world class", and cleaned up to be centre stage. If people would have continued to love Vancouver as it really was, without the pretense of " world class", I think we would all be a lot happier. Your video and indeed your paintings reflect what Vancouver really was in a much better day. Thank you.

"World Class" means homogenized, multicultied and divided as hell. No wonder we hear about so many people being attacked on the street in that area now.

That red '60 Chevy Hardtop really draws your attention to the painting.

WOW, Robson was a one way street west bound at Hornby... did not know that. After they tore down Danceland only years later to build the new court houses, that should have been the sign that Vancouver was turning into a no fun zone.

Do you use a projector for your sketch layout? Or maybe a grid layout? Your perspective is really really well done. Im an artist myself. But no where as good as you. Much respect.

i grew up in Burnaby in those days with strong musical interests and never knew anything about Danceland. But my old man never allowed me to go to such places anyhow. What have we got for dancehalls now? We have virtually nothing, probably because all the land is more valuable for high density housing. If you want to meet women, go on the internet and be dehumanized, it seems.
