im gonna assume where you step doesn't matter for this, it's just shuffling because that's the easiest way to tap your feet a lot whilst not having anything to hold?

Ahhh yes, you can step on top or bottom of the pad as long as it match the same vertical line on the screen (or just tapping the pad). The shuffle is the way of this game has represents. You can dance in other style too. Must play this it more free style than other dance game.
