This is a travel documentary about the Argentine Tango, experienced, questioned and pursued by a young professional dancer.
A personal journey shared with anyone interested in tango in particular, and the appropriation process of a culturally marked art form in general.
It talks only of one path, one experience, answers only the questions it can raise.
Tell us about your path, your experience in the comments !
Realisation and concept : Pierre Chesneau
Consulting : Bruno Buthion
Editing : Antoine Cognet.
Produced by l'AMDOS, Tango de Soie, and all the contributors from Ulule (list at the end of the documentary).

What is your experience with learning something belonging to a culture that was not your own ? Appropriation is a very modern and present issue, and can exist in learning a language, living abroad, learning and art form, etc... What was it for you ? Share your story in the comments below if you feel like it, I am very curious and iam sure i am not the only one ! :)

It makes me re-assess my own preconceptions and challenge them, which are both very difficult! Then you learn to let the new information in and flow with it - takes time :)

Was involved with Tango here in Chicago many years ago. Best experience I ever had as to people, the music and sheer joy of improvising new steps. At 85, the legs do not respond as before.

That is such a nice thing to share, thank you. Sorry to hear the legs are limitating now. I hope the memory and the joy are still vivid (sounds like it :)). All the best !

Hi Pierre, thank you so much for this docu...I'm german, and I lived in Edinburgh for some years where I discovered tango and was taught by Jenny & Ricardo Oria. They taught me about abrazo, however since I've moved back to Germany I've not danced because here it's too technical for me...I miss the embrace...😕One day I will go to Buenos Aires and dance there.

Hi ! Thx for watching and for your comment ! I feel your frustration, believe me :). Luckily i have found here and there in Europe people that satisfy what I'm looking for in dancing tango; be it the embrace quality, expression of genuine self or sensation of extendable time. So there is hope ! Just a testament to how rich and subtle tango is, that many people will have learned it and still miss some important aspect of it. In a way that's also what makes it worth learning. A sort of eluding truth to it... :). Wish you to find what you're looking for, in BA or elsewhere! Abrazo!

Appreciate the post. Surprised to see and hear Pablo and Sofia again. I was honored to have a chance to take group lessons with them on their US tour. I felt guilty having a professional work with me on my frame-balance. Fantastic teachers-very patient in presenting tango.

Thank you very much for the video, Pierre! It was extremely interesting and useful for me. I am also planning to visit Buenos Airos, but it's going to be in the future. And it's of course all about Tango. Here I would like to share something interesting. I am a Bulgarian and I was born in our Bulgarian folk dance. In Bulgaria everybody can dance that, and it doesn't matter how good. So, a couple of years ago I watched some Japans who have leaned Bulgarian folk and could dance everything just perfectly and even very fast! But, there was still something missing... I could feel that. It's like a robot who does everything without mistakes, but there isn't a soul, or kind of. When we dance our folk in our specific music its very much seenable in our eyes and also in our faces. And also in the body there ist still something, some specific energy, some magic. That's why one day I wish to go also in Argentina and try to learn the "real" way of tango dancing :)

Hey Georgi ! Thx for you message and for sharing here your experience with this type of specific dance identities. Indeed, what you describe is exactly what drove me to go BA the first time and to make this documentary. The answers that came of it, for me at least, were more complicated than a simple matter of nationality, and brought me a lot personally. Thx again for watching and contributing to the exchange of experience :)

I didn't grow up in that kind of culture….instead of a culture that vulnerability is weak and shameful. I knew something that I needed to have to survive - connection from a very young age. For many decades later, I heard Argentine tango and without researching internet, I signed up and since then I never looked back - I found the very connection that I had been searching for. It taught me life….it opens my eyes to realities of life. And yes, Pablo and Sofia are two of many teachers taught me the skills to lead without judgement that I am a woman who takes the lead role...

Isn't it sad that those incredible experiences of connection are not mainstream ? That one need to look for it, hope to find it to ever experience it. Thanks for your comment and sharing you story. Pablo and Sofia are great !

Abrazos!

Just came across this video, and I want to say something that is probably in popular here: Sure, tango has its rich history and a whole world of nuances that come with it. But it is sold to many people in the west and Asia alike, with a mystified quality. Many tango teachers are actually not dancers, they don’t train their body either, so the way they can continue to have work is by mystifying the magic of tango, the connection and personalities. This also also is reflected on the vast majority of tango population. 99% are not dancing it as a dance, where control and awareness of one’s own body is important, and interpreting the music through visual form is the ultimate goal. Of course I am not saying that should be the only goal of dancing tango, but vast majority of people who do it are searching for the magic connection without supporting it with techniques and training. The film is well made and shows very well how many people can be emotionally captivated by tango. But I believe it should also be recognised, that tango has become an industry, and thus some of those who work in it would find whatever way to extend the commercial value of it.

Not sure i get what you talk about.. when you say it is not tought by actual dancers. do you mean by professional dancers? dancing tango, like many other social dances, specially partnered social dances, is just to have fun, to connect with someone and dance what you like, with a community you like.
@BloomynTimes
@BloomynTimes 6 месяцев назад
Interesting take... I do agree that tango is an industry and nowhere is it clearer than in Buenos Aires. But to say that 99% of tango dancers do not engage with the dance with the qualities you describe, I would politely disagree. As far as social dance goes (and I have explored quite a few), I found in tango most of the highly qualitative and well trained dancer by far. Of course not to levels of expertise from pro contemporary dancers or the likes. But I would say for a social dance, where the focus is mostly on meeting people and having fun, the level of investment and reverence is quite high. Which is something I enjoy. The fact that it is an industry.... Is a double edge sword. But as someone that worked for many years as a dancer and pedagogue. I appreciate people trying to make a decent living. I don't think they are the villains of society. In any case, thanks a lot for your interesting comment and for taking the time to watch the video. Very much appreciated! All the best for 2024!

"Les corps ne mentent pas" c'est vite dit. Regardez un acteur ou un politique, vous voyez bien que c'est faux.
@BloomynTimes
@BloomynTimes Год назад

Thank you for your feedback and for watching the video. Personally i find it fascinating to observe the difference, and in the crowd from BA, there Pancho dancing, one of my favorite social dancer. But I totally understand your perspective too. I can be long and boring depending how it is received. I also wished it was more pleasing visually. Hopefully in futur projects :). Glad there were still some interesting parts in it for you nonetheless!

Ahah :). I either learned nothing or learned everything I had to learn. What I love most about having done this video, is that it is non-confrontational: 6 days ago someone commented "this video makes me wanna learn Tango in Buenos Aires as well", and yesterday your comment "In summary, you did not learn much". And you are both totally right and legitimate in your assumption. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leaving a comment. I appreciate it! Cheers
