When a 200 page cooking competition can make me cry, and probably an equal amount is dedicated to engineering and its still a favorite book, you know the author is a genius. The ending of speaking bones wrecked me, stoked to see what you think
Ken Liu truly is an incredible author…his character work is unparalleled! I also love how he can go off on a tangent but I trust him to later show me the reason for said tangent…nothing feels like a waste.
I gotta say, Jia is one of the best written characters ive ever read. Her role in the entire series is unreal. Where she started and where her story ends up is amazing
It's a great feeling when a book series you're planning to start is consistently living up to the hype for all your favorite booktubers haha I've listened to both Bookborn and Petriks interviews with Ken Liu, and the guy seems like a genius, but also really friendly and open
You’re going to absolutely love Speaking Bones. It’s so good and I cried when I finished it. The series in unparalleled in its character and world building.
Finished Wall of Storms this week. Knocking out a couple other reads and then I’m going to dive into this one. Very excited for it. The second half of WoS was wild.
I loved both parts of WoS! The first part had so many interesting characters introduced and moving storylines. And then BAM! The second half. I don’t think I cried and screamed and raged while reading as much as reading that second half!
I preferred this one to Grace of Kings, because I had a hard time really caring for any characters in Grace of Kings. The Veiled Throne had better character work, and I will always take better characters worse plot over better plot worse characters.
Looking forward to delving into this series. My library only has the first book on audio and the rest on ebook format, so I've been putting it off until I have my ebook TBR cleared enough to get to it.
Great review Matt! It was supposed to be one book but the publishers were not willing to publish a 2000 page book and it might not even be possible! I’m happy you loved it!
I’m lying in bed finished with reading for tonight but will get into the second half when I wake up but dying to know what strange event happens in the second half! Omg what?? A cooking competition??? 💀 I bet it’s the Raz… kid?
I must be an outlier because Veiled Throne is not my least favorite. I rank them 2, 1, 3, 4. I think if I ever reread the series I may stop at 2. Book 4 focused so much on a character that drove me crazy. I don't think we are supposed to really like them and they do have character growth but it just dragged on and on for me. Otherwise, book 4 is great.
Reviewing without any spoilers is like talking about a dish without mentioning what it tastes and looks and smells like. There is no true substance here. I'd appreciate a proper review. Most people watching come here after finishing the book themselves. Only that way you can rant appropriately about the cooking contest nonsense.
Then watch someone who does that. But you are wrong that most people who watch are those who already read. That group has always been a minority on my videos.
