Today we take a look at how our Dane axes interact with cloth and maille armors. These axes were a popular weapon during the Viking period right up through the end of the 11th century. Many of the representations we have of these axes come from the Bayeux tapestry, an embroidered work depicting the events surrounding the Norman invasion of Anglo-Saxon England in and around 1066AD. In the tapestry there are over 200 depictions of armed men, and out of those 79 are depicted in armor.

That's a nice test, although I believe it was not the wisest idea to put the 'armor' pieces on the soft boxing pillar as you can see it absorbed a lot of force. I have a feeling the result might be different if a guy was hit in some sturdier spot, let's say in the chest or a hip (simulated by a harder material) - in this case the cloth might've been cut as well. But nevermind if it penetrated the cloth or not, I would not like to be on the other side, such a shot would devastate my bones.

Have you ever punched one? Heavy bags are not that soft. They're meant to replicate the resistance that a real person has to being struck. The fact that it looks soft when struck shows how much force is transferred to the target.

I've spent a lot of years cutting with axes, and I agree if it is on a piece of bone + meat like an arm/leg, I think it will cut more. This is why you have a chopping block underneath when you split wood. If you put the wood on soft ground, it won't split as easily as if on a block.

Against the armor it isn't just about trying to penetrate it. Against flexible chain links and the underlying cloth it might not cut through it. However, the key point is the force of it against that armor that doesn't resist the force is then absorbed into the body thereby potentially breaking bone. The armor may reduce some of the force but it is still substantial.

Thin blades for peasants. Thick blades for the local men at arms.

At the Battle of Hastings, the badasses with the big axes were the Anglo-Danish/Anglo-Saxon housecarls, not the Normans!

How much would the effect have differed with a full Dane axe, that looked like a really shortened haft?

I think the bag has too much give obesity was less common back then. Also they probably would have targeted the neck and head area.

I wonder how effective these axes were against horses, and if they were more capable of one-shotting a horse than other weapons of the time

Put my money on caltrops for one shoting a horse.

If you look on the tapestry, the Dane axes are almost always facing off against the horsemen in the battle. It could be a symbolic thing, but it wouldn't surprise me if daneaxes were used as a kind of anti cavalry weapon
